Re: [oXygen-user] [OXYGEN-9712] Why is the size limit so low for comfortably editing files in text mode in scripts such as Tamil?

2023-10-25 Thread Oxygen XML Editor Support (Adrian Buza)

Hello,

Tamil is a script that requires "special characters" support in text
mode. When you open in Oxygen a document that contains such script (with
default options) you are prompted to Enable/Disable support for
bidirectional text and special characters. When this support is enabled,
the performance is affected significantly. Larger documents incur a more
significant performance penalty. By default *this support is disabled
for files larger than 300KB, but performance can be acceptable for up to
800KB.*

https://www.oxygenxml.com/doc/versions/26.0/ug-editor/topics/bidirectional-support.html

if I edit in text mode a file containing the equivalent of 60 pages
(which has a *size of 693 kB*), I can no longer trust what I see and
have to enter the Tamil text without paying attention to the position
of the cursor, which is far to the right side of the actual insertion
position.

Why is that the case?
To answer your question, if you have the default limit of 300k in Oxygen
and are editing a file that is larger, the "special characters" support
is disabled without notification. With the support disabled, it is
normal for the cursor positioning and editing to be "off".
If you want to have it enabled, go to Options > Preferences, Editor >
Open/Save and in the section "Support for Special Characters" *configure
the 'Disable special characters support for documents larger than
(characters)' limit to 800k*. If you feel confident it will hold, you
could clear the Disable box (so that it never gets disabled), but be
aware that the larger the document, the more it will slow down, up to
making it appear as hanged. If you disable the limit, I would advise to
at least set it to "Prompt for each document", so you can disable it
yourself when it's not needed.

Why is a text editor such as Notepad++ capable of doing what oXygen
cannot do, with respect to rendering text containing complex scritps
such as Tamil?
Oxygen XML Editor is a Java application and at least for the text mode
it uses the support that Java implements for rendering texts and
managing cursor positions. When dealing with large file sizes and
special scripts, the Java implementation struggles to efficiently handle
the text rendering and cursor positioning due the complexity and nuances
of the script that is not handled natively.

On the other hand, text editors like Notepad++, which are solely built
for handling text files, might perform better with large files and
complex scripts because they use native methods (OS support) to render
and manage cursor positions in the text.

Adrian

I am currently editing an ancient Portuguese-Tamil dictionary
and as soon as the file size reaches a certain size, I can no longer
trust the cursor position.

To give an example,
if I edit today in text mode a file containing the equivalent of one
page, which has a size of 23 kB, I can trust the position of the cursor

on screen to show me where the next Tamil character will be inserted.

HOWEVER, if I edit in text mode a file containing the equivalent of 60
pages (which has a size of 693 kB), I can no longer trust what I see
and have to enter the Tamil text without paying attention to the
position of the cursor, which is far to the right side of the actual

Re: [oXygen-user] [OXYGEN-6406] The text in Oxygen is fuzzy with my new laptop

2023-07-07 Thread Oxygen XML Editor Support (Adrian Buza)

Hi,

I'm guessing this is v25.1 of Oxygen. Please specify if otherwise.

The problem is most likely with the Windows scaling setting, probably
different for each monitor. The old laptop probably had the same scaling
for both (or a single setting system-wide).
*Under Windows Settings > Display settings, check the display resolution
and "scale and layout" for each monitor.*

Currently Oxygen is only System DPI Aware, it is not Per-Monitor DPI
Aware. So if you have two monitors (or laptop screen and monitor) with
different DPI/scaling settings, it cannot change the scaling
dynamically, if move it to another monitor. Oxygen uses the system wide
scaling setting (the one of the primary display) detected at application
startup, not the monitor-based scaling setting.

*
**Quick-fix to try, move Oxygen to the monitor you intend to use it on
and restart Oxygen.*

Adrian

Re: [oXygen-user] Is there a way to collapse an element from its end tag?

2022-11-15 Thread Oxygen XML Editor Support (Adrian Buza)

Hello Roger,

It appears that the "Toggle fold" action isn't active on the end tag.
A simple workaround (two steps), since you want to collapse that element
anyway, is to use the "Go to Matching tag" (Ctrl+Shift+G) action on the
end tag which will position you on the start tag. Then you can then use
the "Toggle fold" action (or fold widget on the left side stripe).

Re: [oXygen-user] [oXygen 21 & MacOs Monterey 12.01]

2021-11-05 Thread Oxygen XML Editor Support (Adrian Buza)

Hello,

Please note that we have not tested Oxygen v21 with macOS 12 Monterey.
Officially only v24.0 and later support the new OS version.
v21.0 is known to be broken since macOS 10.15 (Catalina). You need at
least v21.1 build 2019101513 for macOS 10.15, but note that there are
some known issues even for that on macOS 11 (I expect the same on 12),
as mentioned below.

Regarding the Oxygen support for macOS, note that:
*- v24.0 **and later are the only ***versions ***compatible that
officially **support macOS **Monterey.*
*- v23.0 **and later are the only ***versions ***compatible that
officially **support macOS Big Sur. They do work fine on **macOS
**Monterey though.*
**- v22.1* build 2020121713 is **compatible *with macOS Big Sur at this
time. This latest build has been patched to work on macOS Big Sur.
Earlier builds/versions of v22.1 from before December 2020 (202012) are
not not fully compatible.
**- v22.0, **v21.1* build 2019101513, v20.1 and v19.1
*build***2019120217 start on macOS Big Sur, but **are NOT fully
compatible* and are known to have issues. For example deleting files in
the Project view will not work and the macOS option *"/Prefer tabs/"
(**Preferences -> General**)* needs to be set to "/*never*/" to avoid
lockups. We do not provide support for these versions running on macOS
Big Sur or later.
*    - v21.0, v20.0, v19.0 and older of Oxygen are NOT compatible *with
macOS Big Sur or even macOS Catalina and are unlikely to work. We do not
provide support for these versions running on macOS Catalina or later.||

Re: [oXygen-user] Major issue with this app and multi stand-alone windows

2021-09-15 Thread Oxygen XML Editor Support (Adrian Buza)

Hello,

Working with documents in standalone (floating windows) can be a little
tricky because all the clickable actions (menu or toolbar) are attached
to the main window.

If the keyboard focus for the main Oxygen window (the place where the
text cursor blinks) is within a document from that window (it usually
is), *whenever you try to invoke a menu or toolbar action for a document
from another window, you are also inadvertently switching the current
document to the one from the main window.* As a result the action or
view you want to use either becomes unavailable, if a different type of
document gets selected, or you may accidentally apply it to the document
from the main window instead.

*You can check which is the current document in the title bar of the
main Oxygen window. If that changes when you try to use a menu action,
that explains the problem.*

Workarounds for this problem:
* set the focus (click once) for the main Oxygen window in a view (e.g.
Scratch Buffer or Outline). You always have to check that the focus does
not remain in a document from the main window.

or
* close (or detach) all documents from the main Oxygen window.

I'm not sure how we can improve this without disrupting other use cases.
When you give focus to the main window (e.g. by clicking the toolbar or
menu), Oxygen restores the focus to the region (document or view) where
it was previously for that window. If the focus was left in a document,
this also causes the current document (the one for which subsequent
actions get applied) to be changed.

Adrian

Re: [oXygen-user] cant run spell check on my raspberry

2021-08-31 Thread Oxygen XML Editor Support (Adrian Buza)

Hello,

I'm afraid that the "Java spell checker" is no longer an option in
recent versions of Oxygen. It has been removed since v19.1.
The Hunspell spellchecker is a native implementation, so it requires a
Hunspell binary that is compiled for your platform.

Unfortunately the Hunspell library loader from Oxygen does not provide
the means to load a library for an unknown (unsupported) architecture,
so even if you compile the Hunspell source code for linux/arm, it's not
possible to convince Oxygen to load it.

Re: [oXygen-user] Why can't Oxygen format and indent a 200MB file in 30 minutes whereas SAXON can do it in 15 seconds?

2021-08-19 Thread Oxygen XML Editor Support (Adrian Buza)

Hello,

Like the saying goes, it depends...

I opened the file in Oxygen and clicked on the format and indent
button. After 30 minutes of processing Oxygen gave up with an error
message.
You haven't mentioned what the error message was, but I'm pretty sure
Oxygen ran out of memory. Basically it ran out of memory in the first
few seconds of formatting then the Java VM struggled to admit this fact
for the rest of the 30 minutes.
So, first it depends on how much memory Oxygen had available (Help >
About, JVM Memory ... Total).

To keep a long story short, if you want Oxygen to format and indent a
large file as fast as Saxon and not risk running out of memory in the
process, it should to do this either without opening the document or at
document opening time.

A. Without opening the document
Use Tools > "Format and Indent Files" or right click on the document in
the Project view and "Format and Indent Files".

B. At document opening time
1. Set Options > Preferences >  Editor / Format, [x] "Format and indent
the document on open".

2. Close the document.
3. Reopen the document (File > Reopen last closed editor / Ctrl+Alt+T)
4. Eventually clear the box for [ ] "Format and indent the document on
open" because it will apply to all opened documents.

Read on for the juicy details...

It is actually a huge difference between how Oxygen (an IDE) and Saxon
(a CLI tool) achieve this and what their requirements are for this, even
though the result may be the same.

I can't really speak for Saxon's inner workings, but it might not even
build an XML model into memory depending on Saxon optimizations and if
Saxon streaming is used.
In theory, if you use an input stream that reads and parses the XML one
chunk at a time, and an output stream that writes the XML model as the
first one reads, you don't actually have to load the entire thing into
memory for the purpose of formatting it.
Using Saxon streaming would probably be faster than your result and
could work for a file of any size, but I digress.

By Oxygen's standards 200MB is a large file (> 30MB). That means some
optimizations are enforced to accommodate a file of this size. [1]
For 300MB or more, Oxygen has a "huge files" mode that no longer loads
the entire document in memory and has some more severe limitations. [2]

So this is closer to Oxygen's "huge" limit rather than the "large" limit.

Because Oxygen is an IDE, it loads the document in memory as text (with
the exceptions/optimizations mentioned above) and then builds various
specialized models from the document so that you have all those editing
helpers (Outline, Attributes, Model) or a much more complex model if you
switch to Author mode.
When you format the document while already opened in Text mode, Oxygen
parses the XML and serializes it with the configured formatting options.
Due to the way the model of a text editor is updated, it is not feasible
to make this into a stream and repeatedly update parts of the file (e.g.
line by line), so the entire document contents is replaced when the
formatting ends. This causes a duplication of the entire document in
memory. Oxygen also provides Undo for that formatting in case you don't
like it or have triggered it accidentally, so it also has to keep the
old document. All of this comes at a high price with regard to memory.
Which is what Oxygen usually stumbles upon (running out of memory) when
working with large files.

So, as much as we would want to make it work with large files, it's just
that the amount of memory required to achieve this within an IDE is a
number of times larger than Saxon's (assuming Saxon would actually build
the entire XML model of that document). The solution is to try and
serialize to disk some of the pieces of the puzzle in order to free
memory. This is actually what some of the large/huge mode optimizations
do, but with limited success.

Adrian

Re: [oXygen-user] [Ann] Oxygen Git Client add-on version 2.5.1 has been released!

2021-06-28 Thread Oxygen XML Editor Support (Adrian Buza)

Hello Jean,

"Automatically accept a security certificate, even if invalid" is an
option that was specifically made to bypass invalid SSL/TLS certificates
and certificates that Java can't validate (usually because Java has no
root certificate for the given certificate hierarchy).
It's not really an option that you should keep on in normal
circumstances, it's meant for debugging or quickly getting around such a
certificate validation issue.

With a clean v23.1 installation we cannot reproduce this with the Oxygen
default update site URL:

https://www.oxygenxml.com/InstData/Addons/default/updateSite.xml

So first we need to know which HTTPS URL is triggering this for you and
*what is the exact Java version that you are using with Oxygen*. The
Java version can be found in Help -> About, System properties,
java.runtime.version

To test which URL triggers this, clear the "Automatically accept a
security certificate" box and use File > Open URL to try and open the
URL in question. Try multiple HTTPS URLS. If it triggers only when
trying to install add-ons check each URL from the list in Options >
Preferences, Add-ons.

So either it's a different URL that triggers this error, or there is
something wrong with the distribution of Java (bad lib/security/cacerts)
that your Oxygen distribution is using. I am assuming you haven't messed
with the Java runtime bundled with Oxygen (in the Oxygen/jre folder). If
you did, you should consider reinstalling Oxygen, as something may be
wrong with it.

Adrian

Re: [oXygen-user] Save via WebDAV

2021-04-13 Thread Oxygen XML Editor Support (Adrian Buza)

Hi,

Both the results and/or output of an Oxygen transformation are designed
to be saved locally.
So, no, there is no way to configure an Oxygen transformation scenario
to output the result to a remote location (this includes an eXist-db
database).

One trick you can use, if you have WebDAV enabled on your eXist-db
server, is to mount the WebDAV repository as a network drive (or as a
folder for Linux/macOS) and configure Oxygen to output to that mounted
location (as if it was local).

Re: [oXygen-user] Set Color in Data Source Explorer

2020-10-26 Thread Oxygen XML Editor Support (Adrian Buza)

Hello,

I've logged a feature request to our issue tracking tool. For future
reference it is issue EXM-46590. You will be notified when this is
implemented.

PS:
This is unsupported and unofficial, but as a "hack" you can use HTML
tags in the name of the Connection (Options > Preferences, Data Sources)
to color code them. However, it's just the connection name that is affected.

e.g.
PROD Name
Note that you cannot use some characters in connection names (like /),
so you cannot close HTML tags. But it's not necessary.

Adrian

of objects in PROD as in DEV you have to be VERY CAREFUL that you

What distribution of Oxygen did you download (.sh installer or .tar.gz
archive)?
Try the .sh installer. Check the boxes for "Create symbolic links" and
"Create Desktop shortcuts" (if available) during installation.

These are not errors, they are all warning messages. They are normal
considering that Oxygen uses reflection in its implementation (protocol
handlers in this case).

Re: [oXygen-user] Indentation of elements but not of comments

2020-02-05 Thread Oxygen XML Editor Support (Adrian Buza)
Hello,

There is no option in Oxygen to tell the formatter to treat an XML
comment differently.
Given the small snippet that you provided, it's not possible to provide
a sure answer, because Oxygen formats an element differently depending
on its type of content (elements and/or text).

Given your description (that the line breaks before the comment), I can
only assume that your "pattern" element contains only elements
(element-only content).
e.g.

In this case, if you want to force the formatter to keep the XML comment
where it is without breaking the line, you can tell it that "pattern"
has "Mixed content" (elements and text). In Editor / Format / XML, go to
the Elements spacing > "Mixed content" tab and Add the "pattern" element
to the list.

Also note that if there is a space between the start tag and the
comment, the Oxygen formatter will consider it's fair to replace the
space with a line break.

Adrian

Hello,

Note that asking whether you trust a site and actually being able to
establish a secure connection to that site are two different things.

This is indeed Oxygen asking if you will allow opening a resource from a
website that is not listed in its trusted hosts (Options > Preferences,
Network Connection Settings > Trusted Hosts)

Oxygen is a Java application and this is the underlying Java HTTPS/SSL
protocol saying it cannot verify the certificate used by the site and
thus cannot establish a secure connection.
The most common problem in such cases is that the HTTPS server either
uses a self signed certificate or is not correctly configured in that it
only provides the certificate itself (which may be issued by an
authority), but without the intermediate certificate (or chain of
certificates) up to the trusted root certificate of the authority.
Web browsers sometimes have the intermediate certificate in their
trusted keystore, but Java doesn't.

Since you mention that is says the certificate already exists, the root
isn't the certificate that is missing, it's most likely an intermediate
certificate that is missing.

You can check the site in question with an online SSL test tool like
https://www.ssllabs.com/ssltest/
Look for "Chain issues" in the report and look for Java 8 in the list of
"Handshake Simulation".

Anyway, on macOS it's a somewhat difficult process to actually import
the site certificate to the Java trusted keystore. A simple workaround
is to check the option "Automatically accept a security certificate,
even if invalid" from "Options > Preferences, Network Connection
Settings / HTTP(S)/WebDAV".
Please note that this is a global option, so this applies to all sites.

Adrian

Have you tried running the installer and/or the application without
su-privileges?

We have not tested Oxygen or the installer on CentOS 7, but the problem
you are experiencing (empty windows) seems to be between Java and the
X11 graphical system.
Please check the version of Java being used, "java --version"

I found an article about a similar problem with Intellij (also a Java
app) on CentOS:
https://intellij-support.jetbrains.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/36436304-Intellij-appears-as-a-blank-white-window-when-opened-on-Centos
If you are working remotely (e.g. via XRDP), check if the framebuffer is
configured to use 24-bit of color.
Someone mentioned there that he resolved the problem in CentOS 7.6 by
editing /etc/xrdp/xrdp.ini and changing max_bpp=24.

If the problem persists, consider installing v21.1, OpenJDK
distribution, "*Linux 64-bit (Includes OpenJDK 12.0.1)*"?

Re: [oXygen-user] Why is the Syncro SVN Client deprecated?

2020-01-08 Thread Oxygen XML Editor Support (Adrian Buza)
Hello,

Syncro SVN Client is only compatible with Subversion 1.6, 1.7, and 1.8
versions, that are currently out-dated and out of support (the last
security fix available for version 1.8 was released in August 2017).

For this reason, we decided to make our users aware of that by labeling
it as deprecated. This is an indication that we are not undergoing
further development on this feature in order to support newer versions
of Subversion. Although it is not our intention to eliminate this
feature, without supporting newer Subversion versions it may eventually
be phased out naturally. But until this happens, there is no reason to
worry and you can continue to use it as explicitly stated in the
documentation, to the extent that the current version is sufficient for
you (and you do not need compatibility with a newer version of a
Subversion server).

Hi Christian,

We have recently tested Oxygen 21.1 on Ubuntu 19.10/X11 and did not
encounter any issues.

Is Ubuntu configured to use X11 or Wayland? Run in a terminal|echo
$XDG_SESSION_TYPE|
Wayland is known to have issues with Java applications. We have only
tested with X11.

Are you running anything with sudo?

What distribution of Oxygen are you using (.sh installer, .tar.gz)?
Please try one of the distributions of Oxygen with bundled Java (.sh),
if you haven't already.

Check your environment for any Java related variables (JAVA_OPTS,
JAVA_OPTIONS):
printenv|grep JAVA

Re: [oXygen-user] TRansformation scenarios: Where are they saved?

2019-10-23 Thread Oxygen XML Editor Support (Adrian Buza)
Hi,

By default transformation scenarios are on a per project basis, so they
are saved in the current project (.xpr) file. Check in the Project view
(Window > Show View > Project), look at the very top at the root node,
it's the actual .xpr file name.
You may have inadvertently switched to a different project, so check in
the history combo box from the Project view or in the main menu >
Project > Reopen Project. Your scenario could be in one of the
previously used projects.

Re: [oXygen-user] A question concerning the occasional IMPERMANENCE of open tabs in Oxygen projects, when "reopening" those projects.

2019-08-05 Thread Oxygen XML Editor Support (Adrian Buza)

Hello,

But if I work successively on 5 projects, A, B, C. D and E
I currently feel it is not guaranteed that the tabs in A will have
always been preserved when I return from E to A

(using "reopen project")
AFAIK, if you are using the same version (build does not matter) and
keep switching the project, the editing state will persist.
If you do encounter the issue again, please contact us directly on our
support email address, supp...@oxygenxml.com.

I should add that I work on multilingual texts [with 50% of the
content in Tamil script) which rely heavily on bidirectional support,...

The most acrobatic is of course when I occasionally have to edit (in
text mode) a file which is beyond the limit where bidirectional
support is disabled,

because in any line containing Tamil I cannot rely on what I see on screen
and have to edit BLINDLY, on the basis of what I know of the position
where the cursor SHOULD BE

;-)

I would recommend trying to stick with the Author mode in such cases.
The BiDi support for Author mode is implemented in house and has been
optimized by our developers to work even with larger texts. If there's
something not visible in Author mode, perhaps have an alternate CSS
which can be easily switched within Author mode.
The problem with BiDi support in Text mode is that it relies on the
default Java support which has some performance issues once the document
exceeds a certain size. This is the reason we enforce that size limit
and disable the support once a threshold has been reached. The
alternative would be to let the application slow down to a crawl.

Can progress be expected in that direction?
We have considered rewriting the default Java BiDi support from Text
mode, but unfortunately it is more complicated than initially
anticipated to optimize someone else's code. This will be considered in
the long term.

but many of the tabs inside my (virtually) open projects

and that when the size of my files grow, the time needed for switching

Can progress be expected in that direction?

(I have always hesitated to encourage my colleagues using the same

There is no limit for the number of opened tabs that are remembered
(we call it "*project editing state*"). Only one project is open at

Yes, that is possible because of version changes.
Since v21.0 the mechanism for keeping the project editing state has

-- is there a limit in the number of open tabs which can be
remembered? (or in the number of virtually open projects between which
one can smoothly navigate)
There is no limit for the number of opened tabs that are remembered (we
call it "*project editing state*"). Only one project is open at any
given time, the rest are just history. Even if they are lost from the
project history their opened tabs are still remembered.

-- can discontinuities [in remembering] be caused by the installation
of a new build (or a new version)?

Yes, that is possible because of version changes.
Since v21.0 the mechanism for keeping the project editing state has
changed, a distinct file is used for each version of Oxygen. When
updating versions (from an old version to a newer version) the project
editing state of the older version is imported in the newer one the
first time you run the new one.
*If you go back to an old version (e.g. v21.0), you will not see any
changes in project editing state made with the new version (e.g.
v21.1).* Also, after the initial import (first time a new version is
run), if you make changes with an older version (v21.0) in the project
editing state, they will not be imported again when you start the newer
version (v21.1).

Mor precisely, I am currently working on several ancient texts, for

XML format) and each text has its own project.

When I exit Oxygen, I usually leave several tabs open in the currently
open project, and I expect to find themselves still open when I
restart Oxygen (and I can see that Oxygen reloads the open files, whih
can take time because many files are bulky and contain complex
structures with possibly tens of thousands of elements.

When I switch from one project to another one (using the "Reopen
project" in the "Project" menu) I have also come to expect that I
shall find the same open tabs as I had left open during the previous
editing session for the same project (which is therefore "virtually
open")

Howevever, I have recently noticed that this does not always happen.

On several occasions, I have had to individually reopen files, after
using the "Reopen project"

(which currently lists 29 projects in its menu)

This being said,
I can now restate my question.

Re: [oXygen-user] Very limited memory for git difftool

2019-04-09 Thread Oxygen XML Editor Support (Adrian Buza)

Hi,

looking at diffFiles.sh I was surprised to see that the memory was
limited to 512 MB (-Xmx512m).
512 MB of memory is more than enough for most diff operations. But it is
true that you can easily run out of memory when comparing larger files.
The diffFiles tool can have multiple instances running at the same time,
so if you give it too much heap memory and leave a few instances
running, it can consume a lot of system memory.

I believe most of the vmoptions files set a default memory of ~4 GB.
That is the maximum Java heap for the IDE applications like Oxygen XML
Editor/Author/Developer which require a significant amount of memory to
run all the tools within the same Java VM. All the other separate tools
(Diff, SVN) are configured by default to use 512 MB of Java heap.

I changed my local copy but I know the next minor update will
overwrite my changes.
For Linux and Windows installations (made with the installer wizard),
*if you use the native launchers, diffFiles/diffFiles.exe* that have
.vmoptions files, *it is possible to customize the Java flags with a
user added vmoptions file that is not overwritten when updating.*
For diffFiles you can create a file named 'custom_diffFiles.vmoptions'
and specify there the -Xmx argument. Maybe try -Xmx1g (1 GB) or -Xmx2g
(2GB). 4 GB is a bit too much for a tool that can have multiple
instances. You will have to use the 'diffFiles' launcher/script for this
to work (not 'diffFiles.sh').

Note that *the .bat/.sh scripts do not use vmoptions files**at this time
*(v21). So, if you are using these scripts you will have to modify the
scripts themselves and yes, these are overwritten when updating.

PS: For all Windows/Linux native launchers there is the possibility to
create a 'custom_.vmoptions' file with your custom Java
flags/arguments (one per line) for that launcher.
If you want to add the same custom flags for all the native launchers,
create a file named 'custom_commons.vmoptions'. I would advise using
this for more general flags, not for Java heap (-Xmx).

Adrian

Re: [oXygen-user] Problem reloading jars that contains XSL

2018-11-05 Thread Oxygen XML Editor Support (Adrian Buza)

Hi,

The problem is you're using the "jar:file" protocol with a .jar file.
The Java loading mechanism of jar files is meant for static Java
resources (especially meant for Java class files) which are only loaded
once when they are needed. So, any changes you do to the jar in the file
system after the jar has already been loaded by the JVM will not be
available until the JVM (Oxygen) is restarted. This is normal Java
behavior and cannot be avoided. Oxygen cannot change this behavior as
long as the jar gets loaded within its own JVM. Saxon transformations
from Oxygen are run within Oxygen's JVM.
This works fine in the command line because the JVM loads and exits
every time you run Saxon.

Oxygen provides an alternative means to do what you want via the
"zip:file" protocol, but, obviously, this only works within Oxygen. Try
using:
href="zip:file:/Users/cmarchand/devel/foe.jar!/path/to/file.xsl" />

This works perfectly, in Oxygen, with Saxon, everywhere.

Now, if I change my /src/main/xsl/path/to/file.xsl file (inside
or outside Oxygen), and rebuild the jar, when I come back to my
MAIN.XSL, Oxygen displays an Error :

I/O error reported by XML parser processing
jar:file:/Users/cmarchand/devel/foe.jar!/path/to/file.xsl: JAR entry
path/to/file.xsl not found in /Users/cmarchand/devel/foe.jar

Of course, jar exists, is well formed, can be loaded by JVM, and
file.xsl also exists, is also well formed, and is also correctly run
by Saxon outside Oxygen.

If I restart Oxygen, without changing foe.jar, everything works
correctly. Problem exists from Oxygen 15 to 20.1

I think Matthieu Ricaud had previously reported this problem, but
maybe verbally, at XMLPrague ...

Hello,

1. Are you referring to the text cursor or the mouse pointer?
2. Which underscore lines are you looking for to be thicker?
If possible, please provide a screenshot of the underscore lines you are

In general, increasing the font size in Options > Preferences,
Appearance > Fonts, Editor should make everything larger for Text mode.
But I'm guessing in your case there may be a scaling issue.

3. BTW, what resolution is your DELL XPS 15 using and what scaling?
4. Or are you also working with a secondary screen? In that case what

Re: [oXygen-user] Java updates

2018-01-25 Thread Oxygen XML Editor Support (Adrian Buza)

Hello,

First, I'd like to point out that we do not recommend using a system
wide Java for Oxygen. Any system wide Java update could potentially
affect the app to the point that it may not start.

The reason we provide a bundled Java runtime in our Oxygen distribution
is that we thoroughly test Oxygen against that specific version of Java
and we make sure that it provides the best user experience at the time
the product is released.
If there is a specific issue with the version of Java runtime bundled
with Oxygen that has been fixed in later versions, we provide
instructions for replacing the bundled Java runtime with a newer version.

  1. Whether or not it's safe to update the system wide JDK to 1.9 (aka
 Java 9) for oXygen 19.1.
Oxygen 19.1 does not support Java 9 and will not start with it. So,
considering you removed the JRE bundled with Oxygen and it is now using
the system wide JRE (or JDK), the answer is no, it's not safe to update
that to Java 9.

  2. Has oXygenXML Editor 19.1 been tested with JDK/JRE 1.9?
We have tested v19.1 and know it does not start with it. Java 9 makes
some significant changes to the Java architecture and bundled libraries
which breaks the Oxygen startup and several features during runtime.

  3. If so, are there any known issues affecting oXygen with JDK 1.9?

For v19.1 and older, it simply won't start.

  4. If so, would it be best to stick with JDK 1.8 for the moment?
For Oxygen 19.1 and older, there is no other option right now. Please
stick with Java 8.

Solution:
Do not use a system wide Java with Oxygen. If you want to run Oxygen
with the latest version of Java that is supported, replace the JRE
bundled with Oxygen with the latest version of Java 8 available from Oracle:

1. Download the JRE .tar.gz distribution, e.g. jre-8u162-macosx-x64.tar.gz
2. Unpack it, rename its folder to 'jre.bundle' and move it to
Oxygen/.install4j (after the old 'jre.bundle' has been removed or renamed).
3. Start Oxygen and check the Java version in Help > About, "System
Properties" tab. Look for the "java.runtime.version" property.

Adrian

Re: [oXygen-user] Change Ctrl+F to SHIFT+ALT+F

Hi,

As it turns out, it's not a bug, but there are two actions "Find" and
"Find/Replace" that duplicate the Ctrl+F shortcut and cause confusion. I
actually fell for it myself and tested with "Find" which belongs to an
Oxygen tool. "Find/Replace" is the action that you should change the
shortcut for.

So, first you must clear or change the Alt+Shift+F shortcut that is
already assigned to "Quick Find", menu > Options > Menu Shortcut Keys,
search for "Alt+Shift+F", Edit the shortcut for "Quick Find" and change
or "Clear" it.

Then you can assign "Alt+Shift+F" to "Find/Replace". menu > Options >
Menu Shortcut Keys, search for "Ctrl+F". Make sure you change the one
for "Find/Replace", not "Find".

Re: [oXygen-user] My code snippets lost

2016-12-20 Thread Oxygen XML Editor Support (Adrian Buza)

Hello Karl,

The code templates are saved in either:
- Project Options - in your Oxygen project (.xpr) file (check your
projects in the Project view combo box)
- Global Options - in the options file from the Oxygen preferences
directory.

Depending on the platform the preferences directory is located as follows:
- Windows Vista/7/8/10 - C:\Users\\AppData\Roaming\com.oxygenxml
- Mac OS X - /Users//Library/Preferences/com.oxygenxml
- Linux - /home//.com.oxygenxml
The options file (for Editor) is named "oxyOptionsSa18.1.xml" (where
18.1 is the version).

In Windows if you have trouble locating the AppData folder(it is
hidden), open Windows Explorer, type in the Address bar %APPDATA% and
press Enter.

The options for each new version of Oxygen are imported from the
previous version (latest old version found). So you have a set of
options (a different options file) for each version of Oxygen.
You might also want to check if you have launched a different
application, Author or Developer instead of Editor (see Help > About).
Each launcher has its own set of options.

If you've had them for a long time, you could look at some of the older
options files:
1. First export your current options, just in case you'll want them
back, Options > Export Global Options, save the file and keep it in a
safe place.
2. Try importing an older version options file (e.g.
oxyOptionsSa17.0.xml), Options > Import Global Options and look for it
in preferences directory (as per your platform)

Hello,

Yes, the file does not exist, so it must be created. I've submitted a

It's best to create the file on your Desktop (or somewhere else where
you have write access) and then copy it to the Oxygen folder from
"Program Files" (admin request/confirmation appears when you copy it).

The problem is the contents of the file. A Java property must be
prefixed by "-D" when being passed as a VM option. So it should be:

-Djava.net.preferIPv4Stack=true

Let us know if the problem persists.

This is occurring on a new install of Windows10 and a new 17.1 download.

We tried what was recommended in the post, creating a new
custom_commons.vmoptions file in the Oxygen17 folder in Program Files.
The file didn't exist so we created a new one. The file contained only
one line

java.net.preferIPv4Stack=true

or

-java.net.preferIPv4Stack=true

(we tried it both ways).

We then restarted Oxygen and checked the system properties (nothing
there). We also tried rebooting the whole computer and then checking
the Oxygen system properties. We also tried not checking but just
trying to checkout the repository.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Important Notes:
- This build is meant for testing and evaluation purposes only. Do not
use it for production work.
- You should install this beta version in a different directory than
your current Oxygen installation. For Windows, we also recommend that
you disable file associations during the installation to preserve your
current Oxygen file associations with the various XML file types.
- You may encounter some bugs in this beta version. If you find one,
it'll be greatly appreciated if you could report it to us here:

= What's new in Oxygen XML Editor 18.1 =
For the full list of new features and changes in v18.1, please see:
https://www.oxygenxml.com/whatisnew18.1.html

Visual XML Editing
New Form Controls for Rendering and Playing Video and Audio Media
Three powerful new form controls were added that allow you to render and
play media in Author mode. The oxy_video form control can be used to
play video files, the oxy_browser form control can be used to render an
HTML page or SVG file, and the oxy_audio form control can play audio clips.

Implement Custom "Heavy" Form Controls
oXygen now provides support for Heavy form controls. This new type of
form control allows you to play video and audio resources, and render
HTML or SVG resources. You can also implement your own custom form
controls based on the new Heavy architecture.

Convert Paragraphs to List Items and Change List Item Type
When editing DITA, DocBook, XHTML, or TEI documents, you can easily
convert selected paragraphs to list items by using the various Insert
List Item actions on the toolbar. You can also change selected list
items to another type (for example, change an unordered list to an
ordered list).

Smart Paste Handles Internal Links in Office Documents
The Smart Paste feature has been improved to preserve links to other
parts of the same document, when pasting content from Office documents
into Author mode. Links are converted to cross references for the
particular document type that you are working with.

Improvements to Paste Strategies in Tables
The strategies for the behavior of the paste mechanism when pasting
content in table cells has been improved. Now, copied cells are pasted
while preserving their initial order and spacing.

DITA
Support for Video and Audio Media Objects
oXygen now includes actions to easily insert video or audio content
within DITA topics. The oXygen visual editing Author mode will not only
display the media content, but also allow you to play it in-place. On
the publishing side, oXygen comes with a DITA-OT plugin that will enable
the multimedia content to appear in HTML and PDF output.

Embed Video and Audio Media in DITA to WebHelp Output
You can insert references to video and audio media resources (such as
YouTube videos) in your DITA topics and publish them to WebHelp output.
The embedded video and audio objects can be played directly in all
HTML5-based outputs, including WebHelp systems.

Improve Speed for Computing Topic Titles
The amount of time it takes to compute topic titles in the DITA Maps
Manager view was reduced as oXygen accesses multiple topics in the same
time to extract the title information.

New Action for Duplicating Topics
There is now a new contextual menu action in the DITA Maps Manager view
called Duplicate that creates a copy of the selected topic and insert it
as a sibling. It is helpful for quickly creating a new DITA topics that
is similar to an existing topic.

Lightweight DITA Improvements
The Lightweight DITA DTDs were updated to the latest version. Also, you
can now use the new Insert Media action to

Re: [oXygen-user] Multi-schema validation with namespace-implicit and xml-model-specific schema references

2016-09-12 Thread Oxygen XML Editor Support (Adrian Buza)

Hi,

BTW, the option "Process namespaces through URI mappings for XML
Schema" does no affect XML instances, only XML schemas.
I'm not sure what you mean by this. Enabling implicit association
causes an instance document to have implicit validation and
schema-driven editing to occur (my desired outcome for instance
documents in "well-known" namespaces — I deliberately avoid
xsi:schemaLocation in order to exploit this feature and to avoid
stale|incorrect|unreliable references to local and non-local resources).
The implicit association by namespace is always enabled for XML
instances and cannot be disabled.
So, the option we are discussing has nothing to do with the implicit
association from XML instances, it affects only imports (xs:import) from
XML Schemas:

e.g.
http://my.namespace"/>

*Process namespaces through URI mappings for XML Schema***
If selected, the target namespace of the *imported XML Schemas *is
resolved through the /uri/ mappings. The namespace is taken into
account only when the schema specified in the /schemaLocation/
attribute was not resolved successfully.
Note that it's not xsi:schemaLocation that is mentioned there, but
xs:import/@schemaLocation.

Anyway, my point is you don't need that option, at least not for the
implicit association by namespace.

Adrian

The workaround suffices.

Were a variant technique to be considered, and implicit association
were "sticky", then explicit associations would be additive. However,
such augmentation might still allow dueling (XML Schema) schemata if
additional ones were explicitly cited. I am not familiar with XML
Schema precedence rules (if such exist).

Re: [oXygen-user] Fwd: Suggestions for autocomplete not opportune

2016-06-27 Thread Oxygen XML Editor Support (Adrian Buza)

Hello Arjan,

Please note that code templates are not context aware.
You are talking about concat(), but Oxygen isn't proposing that, it
proposes the code templates that start with "con". In this case it's the
"conc" code template that does indeed expand to concat(), but Oxygen
doesn't check if the expanded code template fits in that context.

It is possible to disable individual code templates in the Oxygen
preferences, Window > Preferences, oXygen (Options > Preferences in the
standalone edition), Editor > Templates > Code Templates. Clear the box
for the code template that bothers you.

Re: [oXygen-user] Search for Characters in Unicode *range*

2016-06-24 Thread Oxygen XML Editor Support (Adrian Buza)

Hello Tobias,

Note that only 4 digits hex codes are supported by the Java/Oxygen regex
engine with the \u unicode code point.
If you use 5 digits, the 5th digit is interpreted independently as a
literal, so this creates undesired side effects.

e.g.
[\u0100-\u1F9FF] is interpreted as [\u0100-\u1F9F]|[F]. So you are
inadvertently also matching "F".

Re: [oXygen-user] Finding Files in Project View

2016-06-08 Thread Oxygen XML Editor Support (Adrian Buza)

Hi,

I'm afraid "Open/Find Resource" doesn't have a finer scope, only the
entire project.
Since "Open/Find Resource" appears in the contextual menu from the
project for folders, it should have had a scope, but this was overlooked
when it was implemented. I've submitted a request on our issue tracking
tool.

Possible (but impractical) workaround right now for "Open/Find Resource"
is to search for the folder name first:

*/foldername*
then you can continue to type the file name from within that folder.

BTW, there is also the key search directly in the project tree (start
typing with the focus in the Project) but that only works for expanded
folders (what's visible) and only if you know what the file name starts
with (prefix). You must also be pretty quick to type. If you pause too
much, it resets.

Now you can use "Open/Find Resource" to quickly locate the file by file
name. Indexing should finish in tens of seconds (less if you have few
files) the first time. The second time it will be much faster, so it
should be transparent from that point on.

Re: [oXygen-user] Finding Files in Project View

2016-06-08 Thread Oxygen XML Editor Support (Adrian Buza)

Hi Eliot,

Open/Find Resource was supposed to be used for this purpose, but it
became slow since it supports searching in content (default enabled).

Trying to use "Open/Find Resource" doesn't work because Oxygen wants to
index stuff and on my machine that process never completes (or at least it
doesn't in the time I'm willing to wait).
If you don't care about the content and only need the filenames, you can
disable content indexing (that will insure a fast indexing of just the
file names): Options > Preferences, Open/Find Resource, clear the box
for "Enable searching in content".

Now you can use "Open/Find Resource" to quickly locate the file by file
name. Indexing should finish in tens of seconds (less if you have few

Re: [oXygen-user] Printing (Mac platform)

David,

The "print service" that the message complains about is CUPS (cupsd).

Could you please try the same with the distribution of Oxygen that uses
the legacy Java SE 6 (from Apple)?

You can find it here:
http://www.oxygenxml.com/xml_editor/download_oxygenxml_editor.html?os=MacOSX
It is the second download, named "Mac OS X 10.6 and later (Requires Java
SE 6)".

You can install Java SE 6 (Java for OS X) from here:

Oxygen (by means of Java) relies on the CUPS server (cupsd) for

Restarting the system is usually the simplest method to resolve
most issues, as long as it's not a configuration or driver problem.

You can also try running in a Terminal window:
sudo cupsd
You will be prompted to enter the admin password. It should be
silent, if it's working. If there's something wrong, you will most
likely get an error message.

If that doesn't seem to change anything for Oxygen, try the
following two commands in succession:
sudo launchctl stop org.cups.cupsd
sudo launchctl start org.cups.cupsd

Re: [oXygen-user] [XML Author] Problem with copy/past

2016-03-25 Thread Oxygen XML Editor Support (Adrian Buza)

Hello,

If you have recently updated the Java runtime (or operating system) you
may experience a known issue with v14 and Java:
Author mode: The Paste and Drag-and-Drop actions no longer worked
after updating the Java runtime to Java SE 6 update 65 or Java SE 7
update 45.
This issue has been fixed in the latest maintenance builds of v14.1 and
v14.2 respectively.
Please make sure you are running the latest build of v14.1 (build
2013101718) or v14.2 (build 2013101716) of Oxygen. Check the version and
build number in Help > About.

If you are running an older build, you can download the latest build of
Oxygen XML Author v14.1 (or v14.2) here:

https://www.oxygenxml.com/xml_author/software_archive_author.html#14.1

Please note that v14 of Oxygen has reached its end of life since May
2015, so any additional issues that may appear from further Java or
operating system updates will no longer be addressed for this version.
To avoid encountering such situations we recommend upgrading Oxygen to
the latest version.

Adrian

Re: [oXygen-user] [XML Editor 18.0, build 2016031809] Selection mode while double click on a string with dot

2016-03-24 Thread Oxygen XML Editor Support (Adrian Buza)

Hello,

Thank you for the feedback.

I can confirm this behavior in v18 within attribute values (only). It's
not just dot, but also dash "-". Note that this does not affect text.

Currently this behavior cannot be changed.

The purpose of this is to make it more easy to select an entire ID
attribute value, whether it's a multiple value attribute or just a
single value attribute.

If I may ask, why is this behavior bothering you?

[oXygen-user] [Ann] oXygen XML Editor 18.0 beta

2016-03-19 Thread Oxygen XML Editor Support (Adrian Buza)

Dear oXygen users,

We are happy to announce that version 18.0 of oXygen XML Editor is close
to being released.
We have decided to offer a beta version prior to the final release to
give you the opportunity to send us your feedback on the new features.

Below, please see information about:
* Downloading - oXygen 18.0 beta downloading links and notes
* Licensing - a trial license key for testing
* What's new - a summary of the most important new features in version 18.0

= Downloading =
Editor: http://www.oxygenxml.com/beta18/oxygenxml_editor.html

Important Notes:
- This build is meant for testing and evaluation purposes only. Do not
use it for production work.
- You should install this beta version in a different directory than
your current Oxygen installation. For Windows, we also recommend that
you disable file associations during the installation to preserve your
current Oxygen file associations with the various XML file types.

- All feedback is welcome.

= Licensing =
If you already have a license key for Oxygen XML Editor with an active
SMP, it will also work for this beta version. If you don't have one, a
registration dialog box will open and you can use the following 30-day
trial license key:

--START-LICENSE-KEY--

Registration_Name=Beta 18.0

Company=

Category=Enterprise

Component=XML-Editor, XSLT-Debugger, Saxon-SA

Version=18

---END-LICENSE-KEY---

= What's new in Oxygen XML Editor 18.0 =
The beta release of oXygen XML Editor version 18.0 includes new features
and improvements to make your XML authoring and developing experience
even better. We encourage you to try these new features and we welcome
your feedback to help us improve them even further.

The visual Author mode now allows you to reply to comments. This allows
you to collaborate with others through comment threads.

A brand new Image Map Editor has been implemented and it allows you to
add links in specific areas in an image. You can experience various
improvements to Author mode such as while working with tables and using
the Smart Paste feature.

Two of the most commonly used documentation frameworks have been
updated. When editing in DITA, oXygen now officially support DITA 1.3
and the DITA Open Toolkit version 2.2.2 now comes bundled with the
application. Also, the DocBook XSL was updated to the latest version
1.79.1 and DocBook schemas to 5.1.

When editing in Text mode, you can use the new rectangular selection
feature to copy, cut, paste, or edit the content within the selection.
This is useful for editing or copying content inside a rectangular area
that spans across consecutive lines.

As usual, oXygen also added many new API and component updates for this
release.

For the full list of new features and changes in v18.0, please see:
http://www.oxygenxml.com/whatisnew18.0.html

Please let us know if you encounter any problems with this beta build.
All feedback is welcome!

Re: [oXygen-user] Creating a RELAX NG datatype library .jar for use with the v.Nu schemas

2016-03-14 Thread Oxygen XML Editor Support (Adrian Buza)

Hi Graham,

It's as if my .jar is being ignored. This is partly what prompted my
niggling thought that perhaps Oxygen has some persistent parser cache that
expects the other jar (from the jEdit XML plugin developer that I used
first); but if so, the stickiness is deeper than just the .jar file name,
because I get the same behavior when I use the same .jar file name.
I just wanted to mention that there is no such cache, restarting the
application will result in the new jar being loaded.

The problem is most likely the one that George mentioned. When you
re-create the jar, make sure that in the 'META-INF/services' folder from
within the .jar the appropriate factory class is specified (use a ZIP
archive tool like 7-zip to check).

Try running the same transformation in Oxygen with Saxon-EE and check if
you see the same errors. It's possible that Saxon-EE shows you a
different set of errors.

(1)What XSLT engine is being used with XProc? Does Calabash provide
its own engine?
XML Calabash (within Oxygen) is configured to use Saxon-EE. A Saxon
configuration file is located in
Oxygen\lib\xproc\calabash\lib\saxon.config. This can be used to set the
edition of Saxon (EE/PE/HE) and various Saxon settings.
AFAIK, the command line XML Calabash bundles and uses Saxon-HE, but can
probably be configured to use other XSLT engine implementations (Java).

(2)Can I control which engine is being used within XProc?
For XML Calabash within Oxygen you can only control the edition of Saxon
being used. See the saxon.config file I mentioned above. You can set
configuration/@edition="PE" or configuration/@edition="HE".

If you're using XML Calabash in the command line (independently from
Oxygen) I suspect it's possible to use various
javax.xml.transform.TransformerFactory implementations, but don't have a
clear configuration path for that. In theory, if the XSLT engine
implements the javax.xml.transform.TransformerFactory service, it should
also advertise it, so it should work by simply replacing one XSLT engine
.jar library with another in the Java classpath.

Re: [oXygen-user] Using a different (minor) version of Saxon with oXygen?

2015-12-24 Thread Oxygen XML Editor Support (Adrian Buza)

Hi,

I need to use XSLT as part of a XProc pipeline, so that route is not
practicable for me.
In that case, you can try to tweak the Calabash engine configuration to
use your version of Saxon.

First, you may want to read this:
https://www.oxygenxml.com/pipermail/oxygen-user/2013-March/004558.html
So, you can attempt this by duplicating the engine folder
(Oxygen\lib\xproc\calabash) first and customizing the duplicate (make
sure the name is different) in engine.xml.

Copy your new Saxon jars to Oxygen\lib\xproc\\lib and
edit the 'engine.xml' file found a level lower (in
Oxygen\lib\xproc\). In 'engine.xml' add a new library
entry (before the others) for your Saxon jar:

Not sure if the Saxon EE license will hold with this change. You may
have to also adjust the 'saxon.config' file and specify @edition="HE".

When you configure an XProc transformation, make sure you select your
duplicated/customized engine in the "Processor" combo box.

Adrian

Thank you for your response.

I understand that oXygen hooks very deep inside Saxon, but I suppose
(maybe naively) that none of these low-level APIs have changed between
9.6.0.7 and 9.6.0.8.

However, you can use a different version of Saxon in Oxygen as a custom
(command line) XSLT or XQuery engine for transformations (NOT for
debugging),

I need to use XSLT as part of a XProc pipeline, so that route is not

Hello,

Because of the tight integration (validation, debugging, etc), you
cannot upgrade the version of Saxon 9 that comes bundled with Oxygen.

However, you can use a different version of Saxon in Oxygen as a custom
(command line) XSLT or XQuery engine for transformations (NOT for
debugging), though you will need a separate Saxon license if you need to
use Saxon PE or EE. The license file should be placed in the same folder
as the Saxon .jar.

You can configure this in Options -> Preferences , XML -> XSLT-FO-XQuery
-> Custom Engines. Press New, select engine type: XSLT or XQuery and
give it a proper name. e.g. "Saxon XSLT 9.6" or "Saxon XQuery 9.6".

In the command line of the custom engine use:
For XSLT:
"${system(java.home)}/bin/java" -cp "path/to/saxon/lib/saxon9ee.jar"
net.sf.saxon.Transform "-s:${xml}" "-o:${out}" "${xsl}"

For XQuery:
"${system(java.home)}/bin/java" -cp "path/to/saxon/lib/saxon9ee.jar"
net.sf.saxon.Query "-s:${xml}" "-o:${out}" "${xsl}"

(do not omit the quotes)

You can then pick this newly defined engine from the Transformer combo
when configuring a transformation scenario: Document -> Transformation
-> Configure Transformation Scenario, New/Edit.

Hello,

I would like to use Saxon 9.6.0.8 with oXygen 17.1. However, oXygen 17.1

different Saxon JAR? Being limited to Saxon-HE is OK for me, dirty hack
are OK as well.

Version 9.6.0.8 contains a fix for a very particular bug that I
encountered and reported. Without that fix some transformations I am
working on take days to complete instead of minutes.
