RE: [OT] WP7 Handset/device
It really depends on whether or not you want to see twitter/facebook/messenger updates from your friends on your phone or not. First time I set it up I used an existing liveID, and I found it way too noisy, and seems the phone won't let me even turn those updates off. So I reset the phone and added a clean new liveID, and exported my phone book over to there. Now it's a bit more like a phone contact list (I know that's probably blasphemous g). The thing that really amazed me was finding out there is no grouping or categories etc for contacts. So you can't just add a tag to people who are working on a project or particular companies or teams etc. And you can't write your own unless you make the phone user re=enter in all the data because you can't access the contacts list. Oh, but you get to see their tweets, and messenger status updates. ;) |-Original Message- |From: ozdotnet-boun...@ozdotnet.com [mailto:ozdotnet- |boun...@ozdotnet.com] On Behalf Of .net noobie |Sent: Friday, 5 November 2010 8:54 PM |To: ozDotNet |Subject: Re: [OT] WP7 Handset/device | |how did you guys setup your phones | |Did you make a new LiveID / Account | |I don't want to fill my phone up with to many junk contacts | | |On Fri, Nov 5, 2010 at 2:28 PM, Chris Walsh ch...@walshie.me wrote: | | | I never said the Office Hub is secure. I am, but really depends on if you want an Australian warranty etc... If you purchase it from MobiCity the phones don't have an AU warranty. I'd suggest getting it outright via Telstra. Or if you want a plan, get it on via Telstra, free on a $49 plan, and the phones are unlocked by default. -Original Message- From: ozdotnet-boun...@ozdotnet.com [mailto:ozdotnet-boun...@ozdotnet.com] On Behalf Of .net noobie Sent: Thursday, 4 November 2010 10:11 PM To: ozDotNet Subject: Re: [OT] WP7 Handset/device Chris, so you are suggesting the HTC Mozart, is best model to get? Re: [OT] WP7 Handset/device
I picked up the Mozart day after release and am happy with it, that being said I haven't seen/used any other WP7 phones. Camera is good and build quality of the phone is solid, battery life is ok with wireless off and not so good 12 hours with it on. I been looking at the 3G / NextG stuff am I correct in thinking that standard 3G uses 2100 MHz and Telstra's NextG uses 850 MHz therefore... I could get a phone that is not 850 MHz, but is 2100 MHz this will still be 3G, but not NextG and therefore even if I used telstra I would not get the good coverage and speed On Thu, Nov 4, 2010 at 9:41 PM, .net noobie dotnetnoo...@gmail.com wrote: OK thanks for the info guys :) On Thu, Nov 4, 2010 at 9:29 PM, Simon Reed simon.spectre.l...@gmail.com wrote: +1 on both points On Thu, Nov 4, 2010 at 7:28 PM, Chris Walsh ch...@walshie.me wrote: I like the 3.7 screen. Different operators use different bands. 2100mhz band was the first to market in AU but it has a poor range. The following bands are used on the networks in AU Telstra - 2100mhz (being decommissioned), 850mhz (Next-G) Optus - 900mhz 2100mhz Voda/Three - 900mhz 2100mhz. RE: [OT] WP7 Handset/device
Yeh I find it's a phone you need to charge every day. Would have been nice if you could just plop it in a cradle, but sadly you have to plug in a micro usb on the side. As to camera, it's okay, but not brilliant. Good for snaps (macro not bad, zoom in nature scenes not good). The best feature about the camera is it is easy to select the camera even when the phone is on standby: just press the button on the side and you can snap in about 3 to 5 seconds (still a little slow, but not too bad). Of course this does mean if you leave the phone lying around, anyone can add photos to it, even if the phone is locked. Oh, and noobie, the good thing about windows mobile phones is you can lock and or wipe them remotely etc. |-Original Message- |From: ozdotnet-boun...@ozdotnet.com [mailto:ozdotnet- |boun...@ozdotnet.com] On Behalf Of Simon Reed |Sent: Thursday, 4 November 2010 10:20 PM |To: ozDotNet |Subject: Re: [OT] WP7 Handset/device | |I picked up the Mozart day after release and am happy with it, that being said I |haven't seen/used any other WP7 phones. Yeh there's a few frustrations with the end user SDK. My list includes, (but not limited to) is: - no way to get list of contacts from the phone itself - no support for vcard or ical etc (although this surfaces more in the user interface not being able to accept or attach vcard to text messages) - no shared data or files I'm hoping for improvements there. My 2c... I went for the Mozart too, mostly for the NextG network. I can always swap out the handset for something 'later and greater' down the track if I want to but changing contracts is much harder. I've had phones with both Voda and Optus and got tired of the service dropouts and poor coverage. Telstra has previously been cost-prohibitive but their deal on the Mozart is fairly competitive I think. Phone-wise, I prefer a smaller screen than some of the 4.3 monsters out there that require a man-bag to carry around ;) Yes - battery life is a little average but nightly charging doesn't bother me. I've been very impressed with the OS usability so far... -Original Message- From: ozdotnet-boun...@ozdotnet.com [mailto:ozdotnet-boun...@ozdotnet.com] On Behalf Of Bill McCarthy Sent: Friday, 5 November 2010 11:04 AM To: 'ozDotNet' Subject: RE: [OT] WP7 Handset/device Yeh I find it's a phone you need to charge every day. RE: [OT] WP7 Handset/device
Uhm, not really. Isolated storage is good, but doesn't share data across apps. There's various scenarios such as crm's or customer service based apps where it is desirable to have small apps that share the same core data (rather than try to cram every feature into the one app them disabling features depending on the user etc). And then there's the entire lack of shared documents issue (other than photos and videos). There's absolutely no way (that I know of) to do what should be standard office kinds of tasks like automate the creation of a word document/invoice/quote etc, and automatically attach it to an email. The more and more I try to use the phone for business the more I think it is designed for stand alone games etc or only for web based applications where you do that processing off the phone. And yes I know you can hack a bitmap to store your data. Yep I saw that. I had thought the same too. It was that I was referring to when I said hack a bitmap. It's not really a good solution or a secure one. And like I said, that people even consider this is a real sign the phone is too limiting but not having shared data. What I am hoping we will see is the implementation of SQL CE 4 on the phone as a shared resource, including a shared data storage that includes blobs/files, with permissions. Eg. An app can use a password to share files with other apps from the same company. Stores could be by company and/or application, and access to would require initial user prompt etc. It is probably asking a lot, but really the phone needs secure shared data. |-Original Message- |From: ozdotnet-boun...@ozdotnet.com [mailto:ozdotnet- |boun...@ozdotnet.com] On Behalf Of .net noobie |Sent: Friday, 5 November 2010 1:39 PM |To: ozDotNet |Subject: Re: [OT] WP7 Handset/device | |Nick Randolph, made a post on his blog i think where he used an image to store |data, which I you could access from different apps, |not really a good solution I guess, but maybe OK for some situations | |http://nicksnettravels.builttoroam.com/post/2010/09/29/Windows-Phone-7- |Passing-Data-Between-Applications.aspx | |On Fri, Nov 5, 2010 at 12:27 PM, Bill McCarthy b...@totalenviro.com wrote: | | Uhm, not really. secure shared data doesn't belong on a portable device, that can be a) lost, stolen or hacked. If you want something that is available to use between company apps, then you need to have a central repo in the cloud somewhere. Sure you need to cache it locally, but it shouldn't be available for each app, if each app requires the same document, then you're doing it wrong. :) Sure, the phone needs SQL CE, but even then, it isn't the solution. People are just used to the Old WinMo days when you've got FULL access. -Original Message- From: ozdotnet-boun...@ozdotnet.com [mailto:ozdotnet-boun...@ozdotnet.com] On Behalf Of Bill McCarthy Sent: Friday, 5 November 2010 1:47 PM To: 'ozDotNet' Subject: RE: [OT] WP7 Handset/device Yep I saw that. |-Original Message- |From: ozdotnet-boun...@ozdotnet.com [mailto:ozdotnet- |boun...@ozdotnet.com] On Behalf Of .net noobie |Sent: Friday, 5 November 2010 1:39 PM |To: ozDotNet |Subject: Re: [OT] WP7 Handset/device | |Nick Randolph, made a post on his blog i think where he used an image |to store |data, which I you could access from different apps, not really a good |solution I guess, but maybe OK for some situations | |http://nicksnettravels.builttoroam.com/post/2010/09/29/Windows-Phone-7- |Passing-Data-Between-Applications.aspx | |On Fri, Nov 5, 2010 at 12:27 PM, Bill McCarthy b...@totalenviro.com wrote: | | Uhm, not really. Hi Chris, |I'm sure they get mobility, but as most of us know the timelines they were on |to cut v1. Sh*t just had to be left out. That's a completely different argument from what you earlier said: secure shared data doesn't belong on a portable device. On the secure data thing, well that's like saying you shouldn't have any contact information or any office documents etc. They are ALL data that needs to be secure. Today, I think the argument is they are secure by not openly allowing other applications to access them. Jumping to a later email form you, you then say: What we really need is access to the Office hub's documents. So really you are talking about secure shared data ;) I think the real issue is the lack of connectivity with the contacts list. The list is designed to aggregate information, yet that is not made available. Try for example to send a vcard. The contact list should be available, with permission. Without that you have to setup a whole other set of aggregation and access somewhere else, and then try to sync those two back. It should be straight forward to insert a contact's address, name etc, etc. Anyway, yes the issue is they left a lot of sh*t out. I think the real prove'r for WP will be the rate at which they make these kinds of updates available. |-Original Message- |From: ozdotnet-boun...@ozdotnet.com [mailto:ozdotnet- |boun...@ozdotnet.com] On Behalf Of Chris Walsh |Sent: Friday, 5 November 2010 2:13 PM |To: ozDotNet |Subject: RE: [OT] WP7 Handset/device | |Hahaha. | | | |Slap away, sure, there are offline scenarios BUT, we live in a connected world |people. RE: [OT] WP7 Handset/device
I never said the Office Hub is secure. If you need a document to be shared with apps, that's the place to put it (if we had access). If you want to secure it, then they should use the same secure ISO model they use for Silverlight apps in the browser. There is two ISO stores, one for the app, and one for the Site. They can adapt that paradigm onto the phone for App Publisher. But yes, they've got some work to do :) -Original Message- From: ozdotnet-boun...@ozdotnet.com [mailto:ozdotnet-boun...@ozdotnet.com] On Behalf Of Bill McCarthy Sent: Friday, 5 November 2010 3:16 PM To: 'ozDotNet' Subject: RE: [OT] WP7 Handset/device Hi Chris, |I'm sure they get mobility, but as most of us know the timelines they were on |to cut v1.
