Re: diabetes and transverse

2001-10-10 Thread Bruce Ford

Thanks everyone who has commented on these issues. I have no previous
experience in either situation so the questions back and forth give me a
better idea of what is common management and what is challenged by some in
this group. And what might be worth a try by the women concerned. I'll be in
a better position to advocate for them if and when required.

We used to have insulin and glucose infusions on all our insulin dependant
women, but now they just seem to have their usual dose of insulin in the
morning before a usual breakfast, (are induced at or before term) and have
1-2 hourly BSLs during active labour, eat and drink as other labouring
women. Baby needs to be fed early (as is normal!) and 3 x BSLs above the
 minimum level with regular feeding.
 hope this helps

national homebirth awareness week 25-31 October

2001-10-10 Thread Johnston

G'day
Several people have asked me if the midwifery campaign has posters that
express the goal of a known midwife and choice of place of birth.

We don't, but that shouldn't stop anyone from making up their own.

My suggestion is that anyone who has the computer capacity and know-how (or
children/friends/partner) should make up posters (A4 pages can be
enlarged). The posters should have a simple message such as a quote from a
woman as to why she chose to plan homebirth.
I chose homebirth because ...
Here are a couple of examples:

I chose homebirth because I want safety for myself and my baby.
I chose homebirth because giving birth is one of the most intimate and
important acts I will ever engage in.
national homebirth awareness week
25-31 October
[insert your local homebirth/maternity group's contact number]

If you like this idea, and are able to make up some posters, please
consider sharing your ideas via this list. Some people who can't do it for
themselves may want to have copies made and posted to them, so you would
need to set a fee to cover your costs. Also some might be prepared to
share photos. Some of the photos on my website would be suitable, and the
women would agree - I'll have to go through them.

Not much time to get this organised, but it is do-able.
Happy poster-making

LIST ADMIN: Mailing List Netiquette

2001-10-10 Thread Kim Hunter

Hi all,

This message is sent to the mailing list every now again, to
remind everyone of the normal netiquette when using the list.
Please take the time to read it

1. Quote a little, not a lot

When replying, only keep as much of the original message as is
needed to make sense of your reply.

Please don't quote the entire original message (including
signature lines) when replying. Otherwise, the messages on the
list become huge, and completely unreadable.

A good rule of thumb: your message should make up at least 60%
of the entire content of the email.

2. Don't cc OR bcc messages that are sent to the List
=

It is important when sending messages to the list that you do not
copy the email to others at the same time, as this makes it hard,
if not impossible, for the list to process the email.

3. Don't send attachments to the list
=

Quite simply, these don't work on the list at all. And even if
they could get through:

* They clog up everyone's inbox, regardless of whether they want
to read the message or not.

* It assumes everyone is using the same wordprocessor as you.

* Some people are charged for their downloads.

Instead, I would recommend directing people to a web page
containing the information (if such a page exists), or offering to
send the information directly to those people who want it.

4. Only send replies to the list

When replying to a message you've read on the list, send a
single reply directly to the [EMAIL PROTECTED]
address.

Please do not send a copy to the original author of the message,
or anyone else. Otherwise, public posts will lead to private
communications, which everyone else misses out on.

5. All messages should be plain text

Please do not send formatted, styled, or HTML (web) based e-mails
to the list.

The members of the list use many different e-mail programs, and
most of these will not understand formatted messages.

This is particularly a problem with the proprietary messages
created by Netscape Navigator mail, Internet Explorer mail, and
all other Microsoft mail programs.

All mail programs have an option for send messages as plain
text, although it may be worded a little differently.

To emphasise: what looks very pretty to you may be complete
gibberish to everyone else ...

6. Use the same e-mail address
==

You must send your e-mails from the same address you joined with.
If you use a different address, the mailing list will
automatically reject the message.

This is to prevent other people from spamming (sending junk
advertising) to the list.

7. Avoid special words
==

The mailing list program has a number of special commands. If it
finds these in messages sent to the list, it often redirects them
to me. This is to prevent a lot of s*bscribe and uns*bscribe
messages from accidentally reaching the list.

The best way to ensure that your message reaches the list is to
avoid these words. If you need to use them, put a * in the
middle of the word.

The major special words are:

s*bscribe
uns*bscribe
h*lp
j*in
c*ncel

9. If you need help
===

If you need help with the list, please send a message to:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Also, if you have any friends or colleagues who are having
difficulty joining, get them to e-mail me at the address.

Regards
Kim
(your friendly list-admin)

Political Action is Imperative NOW!!!

2001-10-10 Thread Denise Hynd

Dear All
I understand that Carmen Lawrence is attending the Homebirth Week Awareness
picnic in Geelong and that as she is the MP for Fremantle and supporter of
the Community Midwifery Program WA that she and other Labour (women) MPs
support the replication of CMWA acroos the country if Labour wins the
election!!

Now is the time for all of us to visit our federal MP's and all candidates
to secure their committment to universal access to midwifery models of care
for all Australains!!!

This list can be help in generating ideas, strategies and keeping all
energised and infromed as previously!!

My local MP recommends that you have a specific strategy to ask polies to
implement (rather than a concept)so I am opting for;
1) Replication of the Community Midwifery WA across the country.
2) Access for Community Midwives/MIPP's to every maternity unit across the
country (as recommended by NHMRC and every review of maternity services in
the past 2 decades).
3) Establishment of birth centres and team midwifery projects in every
maternity unit across the country.
4) Introduction of no fault health insurance as in NZ in light of the
insurance industry collapses which will probably be escalated after the WTC.

What else is happening?
What have been repsonses other have had??

Denise
