[ozmidwifery] health advisory to my girlfriends

2003-01-14 Thread Aviva Sheb'a

Received this today...I think we've had it
before, but here it is anyway.
Aviva

Hey Ladies.
I was reading an artircle today about a chemical that is found in many
beauty products that is harmful to our health (especially to those of us wanting
children as it can cause birth defects).
It is a chemical called phthalates, and most beauty products don't list it
on the labels of products, but it has recently been discovered as harmful to our
health.
Basically all perfumes have it in it, so it is advised we stop using them.
Other products such as deodorants, hairspray, nailpolish etc. have it
in them as well. But some of these products are phthalates -free.
To find out some of the more popular products that contain it and
which ones don't check out this web site: www.nottoopretty.org

This site tells you exactly what this chemical does, and on the first page
under the heading WHERE ARE THESE PHTHALATES COMING FROM, there is a link to a
page that lists many of the products which contain this chemical and
which ones don't.

Since the beauty companies aren't keeping us informed, lets do it
ourselves. We girls have to look out for each other. Health is more improtant
than beauty.
If there are women in your life you care about, pass this on.

Thanks for this response Robyn. I think you have misinterpreted what I have
said. I can’t reply to Ozmidwifery – if you want to send this on, for the
sake of open discussion, please do so. I acknowledge that different people
approach a problem in different ways.

I don’t think I am suggesting we should act out of fear. I think it’s more
out of what I consider to be a strategic process that I am suggesting that
the MIPP Matters page undergo a slight change. I don’t want to become
embroiled in legal action – several lawyers have told me that it would
probably be in contravention of competition principles if we were
deregistered for practice without insurance, but they aren’t offering to
take it on pro bono. I hope to be able to work through this issue of whether
midwives should be allowed to practise uninsured if they and their clients
choose. In my mind the best solution would be that midwifery is recognised
for what it is – an essential service, to which every woman has a right –
rather than some sort of alternative that only a few people can access.
Perhaps I am submissive. I can only act in my own truth, as you can too.
Only time will tell what is the right way to go, and I think everyone needs
to be working to the best of their ability.

As far as MIPP Matters is concerned, that will be a decision for members. If
someone in MIPP wants to take responsibility to provide suitable material
each month, and the group agrees that it should go ahead, the editorial team
will probably accept it.

I am not speaking against traditional birth attendants, doulas or others,
particularly people like Sue Cookson! I am simply saying that the authentic
midwifery profession needs to be strengthened, and somehow escape the
strangle hold of medical control that currently exists in hospitals, as well
as increase access to homebirth and midwife primary care for all women.
Although I am happy to answer criticisms, I don’t want to engage in airing
differences of opinion, so I hope this satisfies you. We are on the same
team. You are one of the midwives who helped me get started 10 years ago
when I left my safe job in the ‘system’, without any idea of the wonderful
scope of midwifery that I now enjoy.

Kind regards
Joy

Subject: [Maternitycoalitonmidwives] RE- TWO IMPORTANT
MATTERS

Dear Joy
I have been away for 2 weeks, just catching up on hundreds
of emails at the moment.

After reading your email - I need to register my strong
objection on two matters mentioned in your email. I understand we have
different opinions on these matters and I understand it is your intention to
do well for midwives and midwifery.

I object strongly to removing the Midwives In Private
Practice Page from the Maternity Coalition Magazine - Birth Matters for the
reasons of fear. You asked to attend the recent meeting with the lawyer
with me. At this meeting you heard him say and he has placed it in writing
- he gave a clear opinion that there is currently no legal reason why we
should not continue to practice and that we should not let ourselves become
embroiled in fear of practice. He is currently reviewing the points we
raised and I will forward the details of his opinion on to others when I
receive it.

Once again we are responding to fear by behaving in a
submissive manner, when will we stand up and be counted? Please do not
place us further into submission by removing any of the avenues we have to
communicate our strengths, wisdom and expertise.

Secondly, I want to say clearly that we need to support the
traditional birth attendants in as many ways as we can. Have you read Sue
Cookson's recent correspondence? These are the women - traditional birth
attendants who have years and years of knowledge and skill and who put
themselves on the line for these years when midwifery was undermined and
midwives were forced out of community practice back into the system under
the control of medicine. These are the women who started working with women
at home against all the odds. We need to support them and grace them for
their skills and knowledge and thank them for passing on the information
through the women they have cared for.

Caring for, supporting each other and respecting our
individual differences means a stronger union of midwives and midwifery 'for
and with women' and communication mediums published through journals etc
should be done without fear and trepidation.

kindest regards,

Robyn
