Re: [ozmidwifery] Re: ICE ON SWOLLEN CERVIX !

2003-03-25 Thread Marilyn Kleidon

Just some info on ice: most women are not
temperature sensitive in the vagina and cervix: we just don't have those
particular sensory nerves there. So, all of those "sexy" movies with people
putting ice in their vaginas: for most of us just hype. I always say "most" as
for sure someone will feel it Then, an anterior lip is not that big just one
small piece of ice held by a sensitive midwife would be sufficient with mum in
hands and knees. But not too long as remember the mum will not feel ice on her
cervix and so the midwife would have to be the judge. That being said, I have
not done it. Personally, I don't like manipulating cervixes. If the swollen
cervix resolves it does so with the woman in hands and knees position
resisting pushing and it is spontaneous: suddenly the baby is on view. Just a
little more time is all. But, if you have had/seen success with manipulating
cervixes then, I suppose you feel comfortable doing it.

I have been told about it, never actually seen it
done although I was asked for ice once by another midwife for this reason, but
it was not applied.  My concerns were, the effect on the vaginal tissues
of the ice (big enough to grasp but not too big or sharp corners as to damage
vagina), the manoeuvring required to actually apply the ice  ( ie fingers
or fist in the vagina) to the correct area and maintain it there long enough
to have any effect, the effect upon the temperature of foetal scalp &
fontanelle that surely must be pushing against the lip of cervix, potential
for infection as with any VE to say nothing of the effect upon the mother.
You'd have to make sure she knew exactly what you were doing and why and be
coherent which can be tricky around transition!  Maybe if a brave
research oriented mw could try it on herself first and report Sorry I'm a

How many women birth at home?

[ozmidwifery] HypnoBirthing

2003-03-25 Thread Mary Murphy
My "sooky" neice gave birth to two babies with the help of relaxation
through hypnosis from a medical hypnotherapist. Her first birth was 7 hrs,
nearly 10lbs , intact peri; her second, 4 hrs, 10lbs12. intact peri. (sorry
about the imperial measure) She was magnificent in labour and reverted to
her usual self for her afterbirth pains. She was only focussed in the
labour. (typical of her overall attitude) As her midwife I was IMPRESSED.
If the art of deep relaxation helps women, then is it not better than the
epidural epidemic that we have at the moment? MM

Re: [ozmidwifery] Re: sore & dry areola

2003-03-25 Thread Marilyn Kleidon
You know there was a hypnobirther on the list a while back and we all kind
of flamed him. I think it was his language. After his input, it was back in
november I think, when i went back to Seattle i asked some of my friends who
had both done hypno for birth and studied it an taught it to mums, and most
are really in favour of it. The way one of my classmates described it was in
hind sight yes she experienced pain but it was manageable and though very
intense and took her breath away was not perceived as painful at the time.
It was like she really surrendered and was in a labour trance once she was
in active labour. She had about 3 hours of warm up and then 2 hours of
intense labour (she was a primip and a skinny thing pre baby) here baby was
9lb 10 oz. No tears. Waterbirth, midwives barely made it:because she was a
primip took their time in getting there (she had loads of classmates for
support). When they made a call and listened to her they realised she was
passively pushing so they literally flew over to her home. And just loads of
milk for that baby. A bit of a PPH which they took care of at home. She says
the hpnobirther forgot to program her not to bleed, but once she thought
about it it stopped (with just a bit of help from syntocinon:she did gush a
little I was told). So, i don't know, it may be a placebo, but you know
placebos and suggestion and visualisations, and aromas, and herbal teas do
work for some and I don't think they do any harm. I think they would work
for more of us if we opened up and let them. It is just comfort. My
classmate also drank red raspbery tea throughout the 3rd trimester as a
uterine tonic, so she felt that helped too. She is a herbalist so she
wouldn't use the capsules as they aren't the whole plant. Anyway i think it
is a powerful tool if you embrace it and harmless if you dabble.

RE: [ozmidwifery] Hypnobirthing

2003-03-25 Thread Joyce, Sally

There are quite a
few hypnobirthing practitioners in Australia. You just need to track them down.
I have managed to find a couple in Queensland by contacting
HypnobirthingR - The Morgan Method http://www.hypnobirthing.com/ . They provide a
referral services anywhere in the world. The webpage provides a lot of
information on hypnobirthing and links to other sites.

For referral
to a Certified
HypnoBirthing PractitionerSM or
HypnoBirthing Professional Labor
CompanionSM, email [EMAIL PROTECTED] and tell them your
city, state and country.

Hope this
helps.

[ozmidwifery] Hypnobirthing

IIRC correctly there is someone (Frank?) on the birthnews list who is a hypnobirthing practitioner.  He explained once that hypnobirthing originated from the work of Grantly Dick-Read - the inspiration behind the NCT in the UK.
