RE: [ozmidwifery] Cord Blood Storage
At my last place of employment we were collecting cord blood. The women were very keen, we didnot have to actively recruit. You can wait till the cord stops pulsating, and mum can cuddle and dad admire with little inconvience, breastfeeding is encouraged. The collection takes minutes, can be done where mum has birthed, and should not take away from the beauty. These women were donating their cord blood, no benefit to them. My concern was should that blood be going to the baby, but this tended to be an informed choice. I have also recently had a client who investigated it and was considering doing it. After discussions with others who had been involved with it, she decided against it. Her reasons were as follows:- 1. It detracts from the birth and the enjoyment of the baby at birth, because as soon as the baby's born the focus moves to the cord. The focus is because you need to get X mls, and it needs to be packed for transport, couriers arranged and get to designated lab within a limited time frame. This is perhaps more of a hassle in rural areas like ours. 2. She came to understand that her main motivation was the guilt she would feel if the child became seriously ill at some point in the future, and she hadn't saved the cord. She also then realised that there are no guarantees in life, and that saving the cord would not guarantee that her child would live a long healthy life. 3. It's a big expense at a time when your income will be dropping for an extended period. These are just a few more issues your client may like to consider before she decides. [ozmidwifery] letter to editor
Howdy all, we have had very little newspaper coverage in Adelaide about how the Insurance will effet midwives but I did get my Letter to Editor published in the Advertiser and the local paper said they will also print it, Where is the governments support of Midwives? The World Health Organisation recognises Midwives as the most appropriate and cost effective type of health care provider to be assigned to the care of women in normal pregnancy and birth, including the risk assessment and the recognition of complications [WHO,1999, Care in Normal Birth]. What is the explanation for the huge financial bailout of Obstetricians, yet not a single cent has been made available for Midwives. This is not about an increase in insurance premiums, but a total unavailability of any indemnity insurance, effecting Midwives in private practice, Midwifery students and agency Midwives. For two years now we have been crying out for support of Midwives and the need for assistance in obtaining Insurance, when will our pleas be addressed. Why have Obstetricians not offered their united support to Midwives, surely they dont think that they can run maternity services on their own? Keep up the prejudice and we just might get to see it happen. The birth of a baby is one of lifes most precious events, please give women the chance to strengthen the experience by birthing with Midwives. Megan Resch there was some good radio coverage though on local ABC, cheers Megan -- This mailing list is sponsored by ACE Graphics. Visit http://www.acegraphics.com.au to subscribe or unsubscribe.

You can imagine some of the ill informed and downright brainless caller responses they had (mostly blokes). So I rang up and let them know about the benefits of long term breastfeeding, for babies and Mum's too, and commented on our sick society and our inability to see that the most natural healthy thing is not rude or 'off'. I got on the air, and I think they were so dumfounded they had found someone who actually breastfed for a lengthy period of time, they just let me talk! And to top it off, I won a prize for best caller! WOW!!!Cheers Tania

Re: [ozmidwifery] Jumpy legs
Dear Sheena I have seen this associated with low haemoglobin in pregnancy many times in the past, but also know it can occur at anytime. If it has been in conjunction with low hb, it has disappeared when women have resonded well to a tonic called Floradix. Otherwise, I have not found any suggestionsfor alleviating this particular discomfort apart from getting up for a while, having a cuppa and going back to bed. Cheers,Lynne - Original Message - From: Sheena Johnson To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, July 04, 2003 11:30 PM Subject: [ozmidwifery] Jumpy legs Could any of you wonderful wise women help me? Lynley, mother of Ruby 1 Year on 8th July and 30 weeks pregnant is suffering from jumpy legs. It starts at 9pm each night just when she is ready to fall asleep. The feeling goes down the back of both legs and she has to move them. She has tried everything, from hot water bottles to baths, change of positions but nothing works. To top it off Ruby, has been a very poor sleeper and Lynley and Lincoln have only recently been enjoying 6 hours of uninterrupted sleep two or three nights a week. She is really at the end of her tether. Any advice would be very gratefully received Thanks Sheena
