Re: [ozmidwifery] Advise, encouragement, support

2003-11-08 Thread Dierdre Bowman

It breaks my heart to hear that midwives who
obviously have the caring heart you have are being forced from a profession that
needs many more like you.  The system makes it impossible to stand up and
be heard without running the risk of loosing your job!  However we must
join forces and be heard.  This kind of brutality must not be allowed to
continue.  While midwives are somewhat of a miniority the women who support
us are not and I truely believe we have to have faith to stand up for their
rights and our own.  WE must band together.  What this country needs
is a means of creating such a public outcry that ob.and politician alike can not
hide from.  I have a couple of ideas, but would love some feed back about
what others think would prompt our communities to come out
fighting.

Let me know, I'd be interested to hear from you all
as to how that could be achieved.  Without consumer backing we sort of pale
into insignificance.  I believe we have that support we just need to rally
it.

Blessings Dierdre.

[ozmidwifery] Re: [MatCoWA] BBC article: Pregnancy care shake-up urged

2003-11-08 Thread Debbie Slater

Denise

Back in the UK I was a member of three local
Maternity Services Liason Committees (MSLC's) where consumers and OB's midwives,
Health vistors, and GP's meet to discuss local health service provision - this
was a member of the NCT.

They worked well and it was interesting that
evryone respected everyone's ideas - indeed I was often rung up by local OB's to
help make representations from a consumer perspective (for example on the
provision of homebirth services).

These were statutory bodies that came out of
Changing Childbirth.

We suggested to Harry Cohen that WA could do with
the same - don't know whether he will take us up on it :-)

Just wanted to bring your attention to a new
website.  It is called PLoS which stands for Public Library of
Science.  It is available free on the web to anyone and should be
interesting for medical issues.  Have a look for yourself but I just came
upon it by accident.  They have just printed their inaugural issue online
on the 13th October 2003.

[ozmidwifery] the age

2003-11-08 Thread Kathy McCarthy-Bushby
Hi everyone,
I just wanted to draw your attention to a great article in the age titled
"express delivery - is nature's way of giving birth becoming obsolete?"
written by Kate Hamilton dated today, 8th november 2003. The article
included Jo Brainbridge's from CARES experience of a caesarean, giving a
historical perspective of c/s, describing actual medical reasons for c/s
versus the more commonly seen in recent years reasons for c/s fetal distress
"diagnosed through an imperfect science of foetal heart monitoring", failure
to progress (otherwise known as failure to wait), breech, twins and
litagation. The issue of women's fear of pain of labour and the fear of the
unknown were explored. The cascade of intervention was described and the
lack of trust in the birth process and the trust in technology was
mentioned. Women's dissatisfaction with their c/s births was discussed with
reference to the rocking the cradle inquiry. The article even outlined some
of the real risks of c/s that women supposedly making an informed choice,
when in reality women are rarely informed about these real risks! Finally a
balanced article, it even mentioned VBAC! Anyway, its definitely worth a
look at.
cheers
kathy
