 Hi all
i've been following the budget and would like to make comment.

If you really want to support Families then do it when they are being
created or enlarged. At the pivotal points of family life.

The family needs support from the time of the first pregnancy, with
individual midwifery care and domestic support services. Services that
guide and support families into birth and parenthood.

Midwife care to educate support and guide during pregnancy birth and
early
parenting and domestic support to encourage people to minimise hospital
stays and facilitate a healthy and comfortable adjustment to parenthood.

Families need specifically targeted pregnancy .birth ,and postnatal
services
to ensure the best start as parents and as a growing family.

Re: [ozmidwifery] Re: home alone.

2004-05-12 Thread Mary Doyle
Dear Jessica
I have been visiting a woman recently who had an intrauterine death at term,
in January this year. I also saw her antenatally when all was well and felt
shocked, sad and 'guilty' that this baby had died unexpectantly. The
hardest thing for her ( and me) was that no cause for the FDIU could be
established. The 'why' question will remain forever.

She already has 6 kids and wants to have another but is very scared . She
asks me lots of questions about what might happen next time, which I can't
answer.
I am loathe to 'discharge' this woman off my postnatal visiting list as no
other services have been involved other than myself and her GP.

Three months to continue visiting a postnatal woman is (for me) a long time,
but for her a very short time indeed. I have given her references to SANDS
but she has not contacted them.

We have talked at length about the weeks, months, and years ahead, where the
pain of this loss will remain as a chronic ache which will be worse at some
times than others, but never go away. She has good support from her church
and her religious beliefs have helped her through this difficult time.

It has been a valuable learning experience for me - I have enjoyed learning
from this wonderful sad mother.
Hope these thoughts help you with your ongoing learning.

[ozmidwifery] Re:home alone

2004-05-12 Thread Joy Cocks
Hi Jessica,
This isn't 'home alone' exactly, but I do have personal experience with
going home with one baby instead of two. My daughter had very premmie
twins, one died at age 2/7. Sids and Kids also offers support for
stillbirth and neonatal death as well as the other groups that others have
mentioned. Another internet group is Ozmost (Aust Mothers of Surviving
Twins) which my daughter found most helpful. It's also important to
recognise the extended family as well as the parents and siblings when such
an event occurs. I was trying to support and help my daughter and family
through this whilst also experiencing my own grief through losing my little
granddaughter.
My daughter's partner made a video as a way of dealing with his grief - he
found that really helpful, and this video is now being used in some of the
major maternity hospitals to educate staff and to support parents in a
similar situation.
Email me privately if you would like to 'talk' more and I know that my
daughter would be happy to talk to you as well.
All the best,
Joy
