Hi all, Can anyone please explain to me what is meant when a MW does a VE and says "the cervix is 6cm dilated but can be stretched to 8cm..". I have never used any form of pain med or intervention, however, after the first birth the obgyn's all pushed the option of inducing due to their concerns that I might not make it (when I lived in Melb the hospital was 30+ minutes away), and to be honest the births were not as delightful as the first due to all the intervention. I am now located a 5 minute walk from the hospital in case of emergency. I had my other children happily with me at the births previously. I would dearly love a homebirth so that I can enjoy the natural experience without 5 different medical staff members staring at my genital region every 2 minutes and grumbling that the kids were there though happy and fascinated with the process. I left the hospital after 14 hours for my second child and about 17 for my third, only staying that long under duress. If anyone is able to help me, please contact me via PM or reply to this message. It's about $2500 in Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth and up to $3000-4000 in Melbourne and Sydney. Individual variations within that are common so you need to ask each MW as you're considering her. Some health funds also cover part, at least, of midwifery care. They suggested ringing hte major health funds, I haven't gotten there yet, but wuold be interested to know too... Medicare does not recognise Midwives as 'professionals' competent or capable of practicing without the supervision of a doctor in Australia. Therefore it will not recompense any services provided by them to pregnant women. HOWEVER: The exception is when working in a remote community : in which case you don't even have to be a midwife to provide pre-natal care, enrolled nurses aboriginal health workers with NO mid education are considered quite competent to provide maternity care which medicare will refund for as long as they are supervised (however loosely) by a doctor (who of course knows much more about normal pregnancy childbirth then any midwife) ! If Midwives were as qualified as a chiropractor, chiropodist, naturopath, herbalist etc then they would get recognition. It would appear that we just aren't up to scratch !!! Our skills whilst working within a hospital immediately disappear once we step off the premises apparently. Amazing stuff ! A lot of private health funds rebate for antenatal classes. With medibank private you can use a certain amount per calender year for things like this. Some of the other obscure funds also provide rebates. Postnataly SGIO provide a rebate if the person used private hospital for birth and went home early ( max $350 down to $150 ). All the other funds tend to have private contracts with each private hospital and therefore are not available.
