Dear Cas,

Congratulations and well done.

I have had my two sons via vaginal births - no. 1 with epidural and forceps
due to PE (diagnosed during labour) - not a CS, but I felt a failure.  Nick
was 'removed' from me rather than me birthing him - I felt nothing of his
arrival beyond labouring to 5cm when the epi was administered - he was
pulled out of me and I was mangled to boot.  Medical circumstances
intervened.

With #2, I had naturopathic care pre and ante-natally, and booked into the
birth centre.  Unfortunately towards the end of the pregnancy my BP creeped
up (nothing terrifying though) and I was transferred out of the birth centre
midwifery care into the hospital's OB care.  They wanted to induce at my due
date to prevent PE again - despite none or only trace levels of protein in
my wee.  I was induced with crochet hook 2 days past my due date, and made
to have synto to speed up the labour only because they were busy in the ward
(nooone labouring at all in the Birth Centre - why could I not have gone
there? - my BP was fine at the time, and I know they induced same way with
some birth centre clients who were approaching 42 weeks).  Anyway, I
achieved an analgesic-free vaginal birth, and felt every moment of Alec's
arrival - definitely the agony and ecstacy - I was so proud of my struggle
to give him life, but 14 months later I still regret the circumstances
surrounding the beginning of labour, the synto and the tears surrounding the
decision to go ahead with the induction on the day.  It's so hard to feel
you have not caved in, when medical circumstances seem to be conspiring
against you, and to have faith in people when trust is not so well
engendered.

Your story rang many bells for me, and had me in both sad and happy tears.
You have my heartfelt sympathies, and my admiration for your courageous
decision and beautiful baby boy.  Don't be too hard on hubby - it must be
very hard for them, but I know what you mean.  Well done on your victories
along the way - dimmed lights and bf in recovery - VERY important for both
you and baby.

Congrats on 1500g in 3 weeks - I reckon it's just a fabulous milk supply -
it usually gets more with each baby - and your comparative relaxedness after
this 2nd CS compared to no. 1 has you producing well I would guess.  My 1st
lost a lot before gaining excellently.  No. 2 son didn't go backwards at
all, and gained excellently from the start.

Enjoy Daniel, he will seem to grow up even faster than Liam!

I too, am planning a homebirth in the event of there being a #3...

I am yet to read your story, but just wanted to say welcome little Daniel
and you are one brave woman.  I was one of the more vocal opponents to your
private Ob VBAC plan.  I am sad you did not achieve your VBAC but I
overwhelmingly congratulate you on your journey and ability to see what so
many can't.  I call this personal growth!! Enjoy your bub, relish in your
new found strength and in a while when you can fit it in let's rock those
lazy QLD pollies out of their comfort chairs!

I am so much a black and white person but it is stories and experiences like
this that gives me the very necessary "grey shades" my school teachers all
said I needed!!!

It has been a long hard journey for me these past 10 months but boy has
it been educational and to all those on this list who told me not to go
Private... You were absolutely right... That said... towards the end I
was planning on homebirthing behind my obs back with the mw I hired for
birth support but the forces of nature proved to be against me in the
end. On the up side, I had excellent post natal care but I reckon the
ward midwives had some interesting things to say about me especially
since one of them found my placenta in the fridge in a plastic bag
(hubby forgot to take it home... Oops! : )).

If I do have another baby I will definitely be homebirthing as it seems
impossible to have a positive VBA2C birth in hospitals here. I wish I
was wrong about that. I doubt I'll have another anyway but will wait a
couple of years before thinking about that.

Anyway, I am looking forward to learning much from this list and also,
just to let you know, I will be very busy in the coming months putting
together and executing a media strategy to promote the NMAP here in Qld
before the State Election which is due for late this year or early next
year. If anyone wants any input to this and has some bright ideas or
contacts please email me privately.

Also, a group of us from the BAG (Birth Action Group) have put together
a proposal to do a forum titled "Birth in Australia-- Agony or Ecstasy"
at the Woodford Folk Festival this summer. We find out on August 31 if
our gig has been accepted into the programme. Let's hope so.
