Dear Jock, you may like to consider being in Western Australia in October as
the National Homebirth Conference is taking place in Mandurah, WA on 30th
and 31st October. It would be a great way for you to meet and network with
some key persons involved in the homebirth scene in Australia. Best wishes,
Lois Wattis, Community Midwife.

Hi Jock,
Sounds like you might enjoy a community like this:

http://www.ecologicalsolutions.com.au/crystalwaters/

There is a WWOOFers program and a strong community there. It's also a very
beautiful part of our country.

Depends on your climate preferences. SE Qld is subtropical much like Florida.

Hope this helps,
Welcome to ozmid.

Good luck Jock. I remember reading some of your articles at Compleat
Mother. Looking forward to checking out your book.

Can I ask how easy was it for you to be able to move to Australia?

Sincerely

Jayne

[ozmidwifery] greetings

2004-06-08 Thread Jockdoubleday
G'day!

Andrea Robertson and Sarah Buckley suggested I join the list.

My name is Jock Doubleday, and I am an advocate of midwifery. Some of you may have
read my articles in Midwifery Today and other magazines.

I have just completed a five-year book project: "Spontaneous Creation: 101 Reasons Not
to Have Your Baby in a Hospital (see www.SpontaneousCreation.org for a chapter
excerpt).

The book argues that, while hospital obstetric technology is appropriate in some
cases, and can certainly be life saving, the vast majority of births can take place
safely at home with a midwife in attendance. (The book is going to be published soon
through the nonprofit corporation Natural Woman, Natural Man
www.GentleBirth.org/nwnm.org)

I am not joining the list to hawk my book, though. I am moving to Australia in late
August, and I want to become part of a vigorous natural childbirth and anti-vaccinatin
community. I thought joining this list might help me on my way.

I have never been to Australia. I am making inquiries about the "best place to live"
and getting lots of different answers. I'm hoping to live in a rural or semi-rural
environment--I'm not a big city guy.

And ideally, I'd like to do a work trade (landscaping in exchange for a room/guest
house) or straight housesitting/petsitting. I have numerous references from work trade
and housesitting arrangements here in the States.

My desire is to continue my writing in a peaceful setting while doing the outdoor
"shovel work" that few others seem to enjoy but which I do enjoy.

I could get a "real" job, of course, but it would have to be part-time. I have several
resumes (in the fields of teaching, copy editing, copy writing,
playwriting/screenwriting, and nonprofit-related work).

I am looking forward to pursuing a new life in Australia and to working with a
community of nature-lovers who are working to promote natural living practices within
the larger community.

In health,
Jock Doubleday

[ozmidwifery] Greetings from Brazil

2002-09-05 Thread Maria Helena

Hello my new friends,

My name is Maria Helena, I have just entered the list and I would like to
present myself.
I am an Ob&Gyn from Brazil, involved with the Humanization of Birth movement
in my country, and eager to interact and learn from people involved with
childbirth all over the world.
I work at an NGO (Rehuna) that works towards public policy makers and
society in general in restoring natural birth as a woman`s choice.
Brazil is a very interesting country, and I would be glad to tell you all
about our achievements in the matter of childbirth
One particularity is that our`s is a big country, with many different
cultures and this diversity is what makes it so interesting
Besides the fact that ours is a model that has become very much doctor and
hospital centered in the past few years, like the US model of assistance, we
still have hope that we can change and become a nation in which women can be
with women.
Recently we have been dueling with the need to introduce the midwifery model
of assistance, bringing into discussion the direct entry into Midwifery
Schools in our system of training, and still try to protect our Traditional
Birth Attendants from loosing their cultural identity.
This is an interesting subject and I intend to study it further in my DrPH
We still have much to learn before we start off our own model of midwifery
trainning in Brazil, and I hope to learn more about the Aussie`s midwifery
model.
I am honored to participate in this list.
Thanks,

Maria Helena
