Dear Andrea,
I too have had some problems over the time with emails. However I just
thought I should say that I really appreciate the opportunity to be part of
this list and thank you and your organization for sponsoring the site,
making it possible. Katy.

Subject: [ozmidwifery] Missing emails

 Hi fellow listers,

The problem of missing emails is bothering us all. I'm in the same
boat as the rest of you. Part of the problem may be the high level of
email being sent generally these days - perhaps this causes problem
with the sheer volume of messages in cyberspace.

I have our list manager on the job and we are exploring changing the
hosting of the list to better improve service. I hope we will have
something to announce early in the New Year. In the meantime, can
you please bear with us while we do our best to keep our treasured
list working well for us all. If you notice that a message you have
posted does not appear within 24 hours, perhaps you could send it again?

 Many thanks,

 Andrea

Thanks Katy. I know many of us are addicted to the list and I for
one wouldn't be without it, especially when i am overseas. It is like
a little bit of OZ turning up in my in-box each day!

I hope we can get a better system inplace for you all very soon -
details to come!

Best wishes for Christmas,

Andrea

Weird Ordering caused by Time Effects

I think this is how it works:

When emails are sorted by time, they are sorted
by the time they were *sent* - this is a piece
of information attached to the email in the
same way as the Subject or the From.

This Sent Time is ( and must be ) set by the computer
that sends the email - so if the time on the sending
computer is wrong, it can cause those weird sorting
effects.

It is particularly bad at the moment due to
daylight saving.

Given that emails can be sent anywhere
in the world, the Sent Time is actually the
time in a fixed reference location - namely Greenwich
Mean time. It is actually possible for your
computer's Local Time to be correct, but for
its Greenwich Mean Time to be an hour out.

None of this is terribly disastorous or anything -
it won't affect your emails being sent or received,
but people will see odd time effects.

So, the moral is
 a) Make sure your computer time is correct
 b) Tick the Automatically adjust clock for daylight savings changes
option, if you have one ( under Windows, this is part of
the Time Zone settings )

Getting my posts back in a different order

The speed at which the mailing list can handle
and distribute messages is proportional to
how long the emails are.

Put another way - a small email will be sent to
everyone on the list fairly quickly, but a long
post will take a while.

So - if you send a big email , and *then* a small
email there is a good chance that the small ( but later)
email will be received more quickly.

( Note that saying or two lines and then quoting
the rest of a big email , counts as an even
bigger email! It is a good idea to only quote
the bits you need for your email to make sense. )

To complicate it even further, the speed at
which you get your email is also dependant
on how far down the list you are. This is
how you get weird effects like seeing a response
to a message you haven't received yet.

Missing posts altogether:

As to this - I don't know.

Ok. Hope this helps. It is probably as clear as mud now.
