Title: Re: [ozmidwifery] midwifery in India

Hi Julie
I’ve lost all my contacts with India now, but you could get information via the College if you are a member.
Contact national office via the hotline and ask Bethany if she could send you the contact details for the President of any professional midwifery bodies in that country. There would probably be an ICM contact as well as UNICEF.
The Indian professional bodies should be able to tell you where all the midwifery action is.

One other contact you might try is Dr Shaun Matthews a Sydney GP who regularly gives time to the Indian people on a volunteer basis.  He may know of the best places to see midwives in action. Try  02 9665 2164 or mobile 0404 251 079 to contact him.

Other avenues to explore would be Volunteers Abroad or Medecins Sans Frontieres (Doctors without Borders) Tel 1300 136 061  www.msf.org.au

My last experience with Indian midwives was at the HBA Conference in Byron Bay. There were two Indian lecturers studying over here who came to hear Germaine Greer speak. Both told me that they were very concerned that the students were having difficulty getting homebirth experience now as with the privatisation of medicine there were many obstetricians pushing the affluent men to have their wives attended by obstetricians.
The midwife lecturers assured me the women did not want this and preferred the midwives to visit them at home but the influence of the obstetricians was increasing as wealthy families were continuing to invest in building private hospitals.

Good luck with your searching.
Jan

Hi Julie,

Not sure about being wise but I may be able to help
you with your plan to visit India.

In January this year, I happened to be in
India and visited 2 big private hospitals in Delhi - Ganga Ram and the
Apollo. Managed to talk a few key people, Administrator, DON, Head of School of
Nursing, Obstetricians etc.

I am pretty sure they would welcome volunteers. In
fact, the Head of SON of Ganga Ram asked me if there is any exchange program in
placed so the nurses could gain experience in Australia.

If you like to know more, please email off the list
so I could give you a few contacts. Just need to hunt for them. I had some
photos as well of my visit.

Hi Laraine and all,
We're planning to go for four or five weeks. Id
love you to pass on your friends info as it would be great to know someone when
we get there. Please feel free to email me privately with any non list info but
if its mid related I think we're all probably interested:)
I did wonder about the culture shock of being there
and coming home, you sum it up quite well I imagine.
Thankyou, Julie'',

Hi Julie, I spent 3 weeks in India at the
beginning of this year on a volunteer medical mission - hoping to see
home births etc.  Unfortunately there was a huge push to have the rural
women birth in the hospitals, with them being offered 'family planning
operations' after their 2nd baby.   Often cash incentives
accompanied this 'offer'.  I also have a friend who is currently there
and I will get her details of the hospital etc and forward them to you.
It will be an amazing, eye opening experience for you and well worth
it. How long are you going for?? Also, be prepared for culture shock when you go but an even bigger one
when you come back as you will all have changed but those around you at home
won't have.  It will be really important for you to debrief well, as a
group, and as individuals. It was an incredible experience for me that taught
me a lot about me and how fortunate we are to live in Oz. Good luck and keep
us posted, Laraine- Original Message -

I know some years back one of the midwives I worked with at KEMH used to
volunteer at Mother Teresa's hospital in Calcutta. I have no idea how you
would go about organising that - maybe contact Internation Red Cross?
