Dear Kirsten,

Or on the other side of the coin is when you do
quote good US research (or any other non Australian research) and the answer is
'oh, but its not Australian research'! especially when they do not
wantsome bestpracticeintroduced or anything changed for that
matter.

Since when has evidenced based research had ANY
impact on policies other than the ones that the policy makers want to use?
I have just done some feed back for the SA state perinatal 'guidelines' and I am
telling you now that vbac will be almost nonexistant or at the very best
non-satisfying for the woman. It actually states to discourage midwifery
led care models that do not impose continuous monitoring...! Based on
research that did not take into consideration the very same model of care they
are denying women - no consideration of the outcomes of this model...just based
it on the outcomes of the medical model which included things like induction and
augmentation etc.
It is like Flinder's medical center trying to tell
me the reason vbac in the bc is denied now is that a rupture occurred
onlabour ward!!!

groan
sigh
exasperation

Marilyn wrote:"It is sad but true across many
academic disciplines in Australia that American research is ignored rather than
even be considered. There is always a supposed political reason for it. I just
think it is unwarranted amongst other things. I realise that big business has
funded research to such an extent in the US that it is often considered sus,
many many americans realise that too, neverthless some really good stuff does
come out. I just think we should keep our minds open"

Interesting Marilyn, that when I was in the USA the
reverse was also true - research that came out of anywhere BUT the USA was
looked down on as inferior.

Oh I totally agree, Kirsten!! And...it really made
me angry when I was there...I was always finding Aus and Uk and NZ articles to
show people and trumpeting midwifery here!! It has shocked me to find out we are
equally one-eyed. We all agree about the Netherlands the USA acknowleges the big
changes that have happened in Canada since 1988 but only acknowledge NZ if
reminded, here it is the reverse for Canada. There are definetly some separate
birthing traditions in both birthing cultures across the pacific but the vast
body of research could be shared and the obstetric traditions exposed for what
they are, but

in agreement

2004-05-12 Thread Denise Hynd

 Hi all
i've been following the budget and would like to make comment.

If you really want to support Families then do it when they are being
created or enlarged. At the pivotal points of family life.

The family needs support from the time of the first pregnancy, with
individual midwifery care and domestic support services. Services that
guide and support families into birth and parenthood.

Midwife care to educate support and guide during pregnancy birth and
early
parenting and domestic support to encourage people to minimise hospital
stays and facilitate a healthy and comfortable adjustment to parenthood.

Families need specifically targeted pregnancy .birth ,and postnatal
services
to ensure the best start as parents and as a growing family.

My body our baby our vote.

 Bronwyn Key Childbirth activist

could you please forward to whoever you feel is relevant
