In 1998 I heard a Swedish Pathologist
/pharmacologist talk about the"mulitifaceted role of oxytocin during
lactation".  Her name is Professor Kerstin Uvnas-Moberg from the Karolinska
Institute. Her work was facinating.  She had been researching the stuff for
many years - I think she was brought over to australia for the (?)ALCA
conference in Sydney or Melbourne then she flew up here to Cairns for a one day
workshop.
I just did a quick google search (oxytocin kerstin
uvnas-moberg) and got 38 sites which I'm sure will be worth a visit if you have
time

Re: [ozmidwifery] Oxytocin & Trust

2003-03-08 Thread Denise Hynd

That explains something of the differences of
wording as I heard  a discussion on the breakfast show as I said which
talked of the relationship of Oxytocin and trust

I still await their response(Breakfast)  which
I will reprompt again

The other relationship which needs to be considered
as it is counter to production of oxytocin is the influence of fear, anxiety and
the resulting levels of adrenaline in pre-or labouring women!

Meanwhile all of these ideas, theories, discussions
confirm for me how fragmented care which ignores or negates the emotional input
and influences, produces all these labours which go "over dates", fail to
progress etc despite the input of artificial prostaglandins and
oxytocin.

Similarly when we arbitrarily add artificial
oxytocin to women who are near to labour they have overwhelming intense
contractions and labours!!

Midwifery being with women requires that we
understand and work with the woman holistically including her emotional states
and influences.
In fact it is the central skill of midwives as the
majority of women in a supportive environment can give birth with litlle else
that is why MIPPS have such outstanding and positve outcomes compared to the
hospital based birth in our community
Compare the rates of women who have no intervention
births eg; 80% plus of CMWA to 12% NSW Mothers and Babies!Denise
