Hm, I don't have a Tumbleweed system myself, so I can't check, but I maintain
an xml file on opensuse-community.org which should supposedly feed the Packman
and the libdvdcss repo into the yast community repositories list.

Maybe I'll ping someone about the issue.

It does exist for Tumbleweed. The repo URL is:

http://opensuse-guide.org/repo/openSUSE_Tumbleweed

The existence of the repo is "announced" in YaST community repositories and in
the codec 1-click ;-)

It has nothing to do with Packman though.

It still exists for 42.2 both on gwdg.de and inode.at:
http://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/packman/suse/openSUSE_Leap_42.2/Essentials/
x86_64/
http://packman.inode.at/suse/openSUSE_Leap_42.2/Essentials/x86_64/

Is 42.2 just behind on rebuild or mirrors not synced? As the maintainer
opensuse-guide.org and the codec 1-click installers it's nice to know if the
package will 'disappear' or not.

Please just do "zypper dup --from [Packman]" or people with messy repos will
mess up their systems ;-)

Or right click the packages in YaST -> Update unconditionally. The packages
will have red text, indicating that only lower versions than the installed one
are available in repos.

Funny thing how OBS sometimes gives newer packages, smaller build numbers.

Dunno about 13.2, but there are similar problems on Leap.

Do 'zypper dup --from [your packman URL]' to ensure you have a consistent set
of Packman GStreamer packages only.

You might also need to nuke your ~/.cache/gstreamer-1.0/ and reboot.

Alternatively you can switch to the phonon VLC backend.

Thanks. I got it working now after clearing the cache.

But unfortunately that still doesn't solve my original problem, i.e. the issue
with creating a working codec 1-click. Malcolm fixed some dependencies
improving the situation, some days ago, but all the libst*-1_0-0 1.6.x
packages (libgstrtsp-1_0-0, libgstgl-1_0-0 etc.), still aren't required,
making it quite difficult to install a consistent set of gstreamer packages
without doing a full 'zypper dup --from Packman'.

I can't get gstreamer to play mp3 or mpeg4 on openSUSE Leap 42.1. I have
switched system packages to Packman (dup'ed from packman) and installed just
every conceivable gstreamer plugin.

With Dragon Player (and gstreamer phonon backend), I get audio but no video
with mp4 files.

With Amarok or gst123 I can't play mp3. Says I'm missing a codec/gstreamer
module. (I _can_ play m4a, ogg, flac etc., so GStreamer is not completely
broken).

If anyone happens to be able to play mp3 and mpeg4 on a Leap system with

I forgot to mention that the issue affects openSUSE Leap 42.1.

But Tumbleweed might be affected too, since that appears to still have

[packman] GStreamer installation

2015-11-25 Diskussionsfäden Martin Schlander
Hi

I maintain the codec 1-clicks on opensuse-community.org

Recently there's a problem where users with a fresh installation get an
incompatible mix of GStreamer packages from Packman (mostly 1.6.x) and from
openSUSE (mostly 1.4.x), which leads to audio and video being broken on their
systems.

I can't seem to figure out a good way to ensure that users get a consistent,
working set of GStreamer packages from Packman via a 1-click.

It would seem that some dependencies are missing, and that some/most/all of
these packages should ideally require >=1.6.x of other GStreamer packages. Or
alternatively some kind of meta package could be available.

Is 'zypper dup --from [Packman]' (or "switch system packages" in YaST) really
the only way to ensure a consistent install, or am I missing something?

Packman should only need to build for Tumbleweed starting today.

Of course the Tumbleweed of Today, is pretty much the same as the Factory of
yesterday.

Maybe the Tumbleweed repo can just be deleted, and the Factory one renamed to

For this very purpose, this repository exists:

http://opensuse-guide.org/repo/13.1/

It includes nothing but libdvdcss2.

It is included in the popular codec 1-clicks, and of course it's mentioned in

I guess the problem is not so much the "real" updates, but all the rebuilds
with little or no changes.

Maybe it would be possible to only republish the repo once every 1-2 weeks or
something. Of course this is not a problem specific to Packman, but goes for
any large OBS repo.

Personally I configure Apper/PackageKit to only show patches, so I don't get
notified about the other stuff. From time to time I manually update some stuff,
when there are actually some "real" updates.

But I know a lot of people are installing all those rebuilds every day
thinking each and every one is an important official update.

Suggestions for additions and removals are welcome. Also some testing would be
great.

The gnome codec 1-click currently does not support 13.1 at all. I would think
that yast would notify the user about that, if he runs it.

But if you can provide a list of packages that make sense to install for
"everyone" (every gnome user that is), I'll update the 1-click accordingly.

That's my opinion at least. To have a fairly basic one-click installer that
makes the default players work. As opposed to bloating the user's system with
every multimedia software imaginable.

The 1-click will add the Packman repo, meaning the user can easily install
vlc, smplayer or whatever with full features at any time after doing the
initial 1-click codec install.

VLC is Qt, yes. But it's not KDE though. Still I think there are some solid
arguments for making it default in 13.2 (popular and well-known, very feature
rich, same engine as phonon default, actively developed).

But we'll see if I can convince the KDE team ;-)

Detlef Reichelt posted that to this list on 18 October with the subject
"opensuse-community.org". I don't think there's any mail archive available for
Packman.

Yep. Afaik it's just mediawiki and the 1-clicks and the non-OBS part of the
YaST community repositories, that's hosted there. But there might be other
stuff running under opensuse-community.org that I'm not aware of.

I guess even a static html page might suffice. The wiki is really not used very
much.

libxine2 is used by Kaffeine - the default video player on KDE installations.

> 2. add gstreamer 1.2 codecs.

The Phonon gstreamer backend has not been ported to gstreamer 1.x yet. So it's
not needed in KDE - KDE still needs the old gstreamer 0_10. (But suggestions
for which packages should be installed by the gnome codec 1-click would be
very much appreciated.)

> 3. add libx264 codec (maybe it can be automatically pulled in)

What is this needed for? If it provides important functionality for xine
and/or gstreamer, it should be pulled in by libxine2-codecs or the gstreamer
plugins imho.

For 13.2 some big changes will be needed though. As the phonon-vlc-backend
will most likely become default, and personally I will push for vlc to replace
kaffeine as the default video player on KDE installations.

> BTW: who can change that file/upload new ones on opensuse-community.org ?

I've been taking care of it for some time. I believe yaloki, benjiman and
apokryphos also have access - but I'm not sure about their activity levels.

However, Detlef has announced the o-c.o server will be terminated on 31
December 2013, so unless some replacement server is found, o-c.o will die
then.

Maybe better publish a couple of days before the release, if possible.

Usually coolo will publish the openSUSE OSS repo a day or two before the
release of the ISOs - that way people can dup from their RC installs ahead of
time and soften the load on mirrors a bit for the official release.

Also it'd be useful for creating (and testing) 1-click codec-installers, the
YaST "community repositories" list and such, so that everything can be ready
for the official release day.

People shouldn't need proprietary fluendo to play mp3, when they get the
various gstreamer plugin packages (good, bad, ugly) from Packman. Works fine
for me with no fluendo.

Also I can play encrypted dvd movies without libdvdplay0 installed, I don't
think anything should be needed except libdvdcss2.

But not using GNOME I can't easily test the stuff, so I need some GNOME user to
inform me which packages should be added ...or removed (I wonder if GNOMErs
generally really need libxine for anything, which is currently installed by
the gnome codec 1-click).

So please, any GNOME user please just provide a list of the packages you think
should be installed, and I will update the 1-click accordingly.

I thought phonon-vlc-backend was broken cuz I didn't get any sound (with
pulseaudio running), but installing vlc-aout-pulse seemed to have fixed this.

So thank you for this tip, rescuing me from the claws of gstreamer.

Disabling Pulse is an option for me, but I prefer to keep it running as long

[packman] Important GStreamer patch

2012-11-19 Diskussionsfäden Martin Schlander
Hi

One of the Phonon developers dropped by the #opensuse-kde IRC channel, saying
that:

This bug: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=302652 ("When going from a mp3
track to an ogg track, Amarok stops playing")

Is fixed by this GStreamer patch: http://cgit.freedesktop.org/gstreamer/gst-
plugins-base/commit/?id=3880323

Since I'm personally hit by that issue, I'd be very happy if someone could
apply that patch to the Packman GStreamer packages ;-)

Sounds like GStreamer issues. Did you try any non-GStreamer players (vlc,

The simple solution is install phonon-backend-vlc, run 'kcmshell4 phonon' and

Filezilla is in the official distribution, and (more or less) latest version

I'll speak for the people then ;-)

In any "normal" usecase you would probably never notice any difference. But
imho mixing Packman and Videolan repos presents an unnecessary risk of weird
little problems. Even though problems are smaller than they used to and
package manager vendor stickyness helps too.

You're very off-topic here.

But removing that experimental repository mentioned in the error message,

[packman] Solid actions for DVD players (VLC, SMPlayer, Kaffeine)

2010-02-16 Diskussionsfäden Martin Schlander
Hey

As you may or may not be aware, it's possible to create actions for the Recent
Devices Notifier in KDE 4.x fairly easily by installing proper *.desktop files
to /usr/share/kde4/apps/solid/actions/. So for example when you put in a video
DVD, the device notifier will offer an action to play the DVD with your
favourite video player.

I've attached such files for SMPlayer, VLC and Kaffeine. I wonder if the
respective maintainers would be interested in adding them to the packages. If
you have contact with upstream, you might even want to ask them to include the
solid actions in official releases.

I'm aware packman doesn't have kaffeine, but maybe someone would be willing to
create a package with only the .desktop file for Kaffeine as a sort of add-on
- as I don't think I can convince kde-maintainer @suse to add the action to
official packages.

Of course if the user doesn't have libdvdcss it'll fail - but I think most
people will have it via the 1-click, and the rest would probably realize that
they're missing some form of codec.

All the best

There's a packman package called k3b now (kde4 version 1.68 aka. alpha3).

The kde4-k3b (1.66/alpha2) and kde4-k3b-codecs are prolly only still available
"by accident".

However k3b-codecs doesn't automatically pull in packman k3b package.

[packman] kde4-k3b / 11.2 problems

2009-11-10 Diskussionsfäden Martin Schlander
Hi

I noticed a couple of small problems with the kde4-k3b package for 11.2.

1) Installing kde4-k3b from packman should "automatically" replace/obsolete
the k3b provided with the distro, which it currently doesn't.

2) Packman version should be updated to 1.68/alpha3 (currently it's
1.66/alpha2)

Keep up the good work.

All the best.

I think you're wrong here. The guy that reported the problem to me has used
SUSE for a few years, and also dabbles with Debian and Arch on the side. And
he, like most people seem to do, simply panics at the sight of the conflict
dialog, thinking the sky is going to fall.

It wouldn't ask about the vendor change if the packages are explicitly
specified in the ymp as far as I can tell. When I tested my 1-clicks around
11.1 release time they'd install the desired stuff in a working manor without
asking "scary" and "difficult" questions.

Yesterday I was informed that my 1-click had conflicts, hard to say how long
this has been the case.

> Also note that 1-Click isn't so reliable anyway:

I've maintained KDE multimedia 1-clicks for as long as the 1-click system has
existed - and generally it works fine. Irregularities only occur when packman
packages either want to replace existing libraries or change arch or if
videolan and packman repo are both used at the same time - or if other similar
"funny stuff" going on.

Of course sometimes the solver has bugs too or acts a little too bitchy, but
that's no different when doing manual installation.

As long as it's a simple case of installing a new package or updating an
existing package to a newer - without "funny stuff" going on - it works
nicely.

As you say in the mail, it acts like the user adding a repo with default
priority, and then installing one or more packages with yast - letting the
solver select the (newest) version - in other words - it does exactly what
goes on in 98% of manual installations with yast or zypper.

[packman] libxine1/libxine1-codecs problems with conflict dialogs

2009-02-05 Diskussionsfäden Martin Schlander
1-click installation as well as manual installation of libxine1 and libxine1-
codecs on openSUSE 11.1 triggers a conflict dialog these days regarding
architecture change from i586 -> i686, or in some cases yast/zypp seems to
just keep the official crippled libxine1 1.1.15 without asking as a "solution"
to the "problem".

This makes 1-click multimedia installs pretty useless/scary for n00bs and non-
techies, and even manual installation of these crucial packages is a bit
tricky for n00bs. I consider this a serious problem.

While the solver being too damn sensitive is prolly the core reason for this
particular problem - I wonder if you guys could fix it somehow - for example
by simply dropping i686 versions for the codec stuff. Is there really any good
reason to have those at all?

Here's the list of conflicts from yast:

[packman] Some ideas

2008-07-12 Diskussionsfäden Martin Schlander
Encouraged by Pascal's blog post I thought I'd share some ideas/requests.
Maybe some of them are of interest to some of you.

* Package Gnash + Klash (konq plugin for gnash). I believe the gnash package
in oss doesn't work on youtube because it's built without ffmpeg and also the
official package lacks the klash plugin for whatever reason.
http://www.gnu.org/software/gnash/

* Mplayer-thumbs. A KDE4 version is available, providing preview/thumbnails of
videofiles in Dolphin/Konq
http://www.kde-apps.org/content/show.php?content=41180

* KompoZer. It's the continued version of Nvu, afaik Nvu is no longer
developed, and they had to change the name for trademark reasons, so it's not
really a fork. I don't have a personal interest, but I think it would be good
to have it easily available for the distro - though the i386 rpm available on
the site appears to work.
http://www.kompozer.net/

* Update KTorrent to 3.1

* Keep up the good work

All the best

Martin
