I have been trying to get this working every-since i enabled "desktop effects" in gnome (3d, wobbly windows and the like). OK, i got it working. I used gmplayer -vo x11 from the CL and
this played it just like it use to. The question is, how to make it always
use x11?

There's no special support necessary. There are a lot of output plugins
in MPlayer (and other video players). Try another, if the selected
default dosen't work ('mplayer -vo help' will show you the list)
