I had tried all that some time ago.
But yesterday I finally installed 42.2 and things work, so I suppose
it's not worth looking into it since 13.2 has 6 weeks of life left.

I think thats how it is implemented for TW and 42.2 already,
the overlap is small. A 'zypper dup' will only update what is
needed. For older dists a 'zypper dup' will replace more packages
because otherwise many packages would be downgraded.

Yes.

But the thing is that people install the distribution.
And then want to get full multimedia support afterwards.

I thought the plan was to not have to tell them to do a full switch to Packman
and replace all system packages.

Just rather install some additional ones that are compatible to the
distribution's packages?

But anyway, it's fine with me...
It was just a question and an afterthought of me.

Well, but exactly k3b was involved in this same path AFAIK.
Why else is there k3b-2.0.80+git20160729 in Packman for 13.2, but we only have
2.0.3 in openSUSE?
And libkcddb5 which hasn't been released yet either?

But ok, that's all not *your* fault.
Sorry, that I mentioned the vlc case now...
And let's better forget about this anyway, I'd say... ;)

Me neither.

This was the lack of upstream support for non-Tumbleweed, so we just fork.
I'm sure k3b is less involved to avoid that path.

Well, k3b-codecs has never been provided by openSUSE, only Packman.
And Packman (mostly) always provided a newer version of k3b, so I decided to
go with an unconditional Obsoletes...

On second thoughts though, it may be a good idea to still provide those codecs
(libmad and lame) in the additional k3b-codecs package. (ffmpeg is and will
stay in the main package now of course)
So that people only need to install k3b-codecs from Packman, and not switch
the k3b package itself?

Opinions are welcome.

I agree. Like for other packages.
That's the better way IMHO.

The current state has been to come from a disagreement between the openSUSE
maintainers and the Packman maintainer I think (though I was not personally
involved).

Btw, wasn't there a similar case with vlc a few months ago? ;-)

That wasn't really clear from your mail...

But k3b only uses external tools for that, cdrecord or wodim currently, but
upstream work is being done to use cdrskin too in the KF5 version.

Maybe try to install the actual cdrecord instead of wodim and cdrkit-cdrtools-
compat (and in particular, uninstall the latter one)
It might help, depending on your hardware. Personally both work fine here

Hi Olaf,

Good idea I would probably recommend doing A-TW-k3b too and slowly move the
other one to obsoletion.
There is no reason why to have special k3b in packman.

Once 442944 is accepted I will trigger an update for Leap and add a
_link to it in a new A-42.x-k3b pkg.

I think in the end development of k3b should take place in OBS, the
package must be rebuilt either way in packman to get mad/lame support.

Hm?

There is a button to erase a rewritable medium in the toolbar and the function
is available via the menu ("Extras"), and k3b should even ask whether it
should erase it if it detects that you want to burn to a full rewritable
medium (there's even an option to do that automatically without asking).

It has been dropped in OBS about a year ago, probably because Packman decided
to diverge from the OBS package anyway and build git versions instead (or
maybe it was just considered unnecessary, I don't know).
https://build.opensuse.org/package/rdiff/KDE:Extra/k3b?linkrev=base&rev=43

But I agree, it would probably be a good idea to add it back in OBS. And I
just saw that you did it already anyway, I think we should add an "Obsoletes:
k3b-codecs too though if we don't want to split out the codecs into a separate
package... ;-) )

But we still only package the KDE4 based 2.0.3 currently.
Should not matter as soon as the KF5 version is actually released, and 13.2
(where it would be better to use the KDE4 version) will be out of support soon
anyway.

I'd suggest to still keep the packages on Packman though for now (for 13.2
because it is a newer version, for the rest because there is no "official" KF5
package yet).

Wolfgang

Sorry to intrude, but may I also add there is no way to erase or overwrite
a rewritable medium using k3b? I have to rely on brasero every time.

So you are saying whatever change dropped the conditional for mad/lame
should be reverted in OBS? In this case the OBS version of k3b should be
rebuilt in packman.

Its just the question which source state should be used. Fix the
available k3b package in Essentials for every repository, or fix the
variants in OBS and rebuild them in packman.

The problem is that openSUSE's k3b package will not contain the mp3 decoder
plugin even if built with ffmpeg.

For that one, libmad is necessary, which is not available in the official
repos.

So currently, I am very much against dropping k3b from Packman.

Regarding the question why k3b is not available for 42.1 in Packman, see here:

Please let us know if that works properly.
If yes, k3b should be updated in 42.1.

I think the following is a bug in k3b, it should use the capabilities of
ffmpeg instead of calling into lame.so or mad.so:
...
[ 77s] -- The following OPTIONAL dependencies could NOT be found.
[ 77s]
-
[ 77s]* Mad mp3
[ 77s] Needed for the mp3 audio decoder plugin.
[ 77s]* Lame mp3 encoder
[ 77s] Needed for the lame mpf encoder encoder plugin.

Not sure if that has any inpact at runtime.

I think for 42.1 it should be possible to submit the k3b from 42.2 to
42.1:Update. Then k3b would build against the dist provided ffmpeg and
all should be fine. While there are many changes, none looks
