Re: Multi channel sound cards

2004-07-07 Thread Jerry Richer
David! So called multi-channel sound cards are radically available.
In fact I'm surprised that you don't have one. They've been the norm for
the past few years. They range in price from $30 to $1,000 and more. You
can get them with MIDI ports built into them also and you can get them with
several inputs and several outputs in almost any configuration you'd want.
Feel free to call and discuss it if you like at 1-518-572-6092.

Also, can Nero Express be used to record from an analog input device?

Hey, if you wish write me off list and maybe I can help. I would do two
things. First of all, is there a carrier with your transmitter. Is it
putting out a signal. If it is, then does the trans work plugged in to
something else. If the answer is yes, does a headset work in the output your
using from the transmitter?

question about recording books

2004-07-07 Thread Terri Stimmel
Hello everyone,
I'm trying to copy an NLS book. I'm recording it, using my tape deck. You
know, with the library tape in one side, and a blank tape in the other.
Well, I've recorded one tape so far, and I've noticed something that I
really don't like, but I don't know if there's anything I can do about it.
When I played the tape in my NLS machine, I had to turn the volume up half
way, so that I could really hear it well. And I noticed that I could hear
noise, I believe from the other track. It wasn't coming threw real loud,
but it was noticeable.
What do you all think? Is it something with my tape recorder, or is this
sort of thing normal?
I'm using TDK tapes, and I've always thought that was a good brand.
Any thoughts on this will be much appreciated.
Terri

Hi All,

I am looking for a free or inexpensive program that will allow me to open
a realmedia file and save it in an mp3 format, saving the mp3 file to my
hard drive. Does anyone know of such a program and where to find it? I
thought total recorder would do that, but it will not open an .rm file,
it will just record it while it's playing.

it was the transmitter itself, but now that you are having the same problem,
maybe not. I had some problems with that particular model earlier too, and
I thought that may have had something to do with my poor reception. But
your problem is the exact same one I had. .

did you used to get a hissing noise when you plugged your speakers into
that
card, because i get perfect sound from my speakers and when i plug my
transmitter into either lineout, headphones or where my speakers are
plugged
into, i get the hiss and the cut in transmission strength.

It sounds like the card then. I still have that computer, and will try my
transmitter in it, and see if I get the hissing noise. I would be
interested to find out, if it is indeed the card.

doesn't let me download the file. The link just above the FTP link says

rob,
I have a feeling that the manic fin who writes the program, and constantly
updates it, has changed the list view, to a grid. Don't know if this is
your problem, but it's the reason I haven't upgraded from version 6/x

At 18:29 07/07/2004, you wrote:
Hi all, got a problem with the latest version of the above, which I

When I try to copy a compilation Cd, the programme lists all the
tracks as separate directories, rather than all the tracks in one
albums directory. each directory is call Artist name/album title. So
you'd have say Robert Palmer addicted to love, survivor addicted to
love, meatloaf addicted to love, where the album is called addicted
to love and it's a compilation album, where 3 of the tracks on the
album are by Survivor, Robert Palmer and Meatloaf. I want the
directory to be called various Artists, the next level down to be
the albums title, and the bottom level to e the track name with the
artist. The problem is of course, where the album is by a particular
artist, I.E. a Mike Oldfield album, Mike Oldfield needs to be the top
directory name, with the album, say Tubular Bells, being listed as a
sub-directory off that, along with the other Mike Oldfield albums.
Hope that's reasonably clear, and if you can help, it would be very
much appreciated. I don't appear to have had the problem with earlier
versions of EZCD.

You know how it sounds on the machine on which you recorded it. Does it
sound like that on the other machine? If not, it's a head alignment issue.
In that case, you can either match them or live with it. If you can fiddle
with the head alignments, you may need a local tech to help.

Re: question about recording books

2004-07-07 Thread mimi
How long have you been into tapes? I use denatured alcohol to clean the
heads; been doing that for years, way back when I used to have reel to reel
decks, too. Also good on cassette machines.

I used to have an electric wand demagnitizer which I used to use on all
those machines I used to have. I think it did a better job than the
cassette one does, but that's my opinion, and everybody has one! Now, I
have a battery cassette-shaped demagnitizer since all my open reel decks
were stolen from me in Nevada as a result of a secret divorce and the person
trashed everything I worked hard on through the years. Many rare tapes were
willfully dumped in trash cans around Reno with braille and raised print
labels affixed to them, and nobody gave a damn about how I was feeling back
then. I could not get legal help and so on. Anyway, back to the present
topic, denatured alcohol, and be careful with the q tips--wipe the rubber
roller and all the metal parts you can squeeze in to reach, then when you
use the demagnitizer you can get at any RadioShack store, you turn down the
volume because the tone can be very piercing and I don't think you want to
listen to that. If you must monitor it, then set the volume to low enough
for you to hear without being freaked out. When the tone stops and the tape
automatically shuts off, you are demagnitized. It does not affect your
other tapes, although it would be a good idea to store that demagnitizer two
or three slots away in your case, if you have a big case that holds 40 or 50
tapes.

The battery in that thing lasts a long time. I've had mine for twelve
years. I'd rather have the wand, but don't know if the electric wand
demagnitizers are available anymore. It saddens me that so many good things
we used to use have passed on to the next format. Sometimes, I really do
miss the older formats, but the cost of maintaining it these days are
horrendous, I hear, especially for low income owners who do not have lots of
money to play with and spend. Phono cartridges are already expensive, I
hear. It's a shame!

I'm sorry I launched into a full-blown lecture about that. I realize I come
a long way. I'm already facing complete digitiizing of my tapes, including
music on videotapes which I recorded two years ago. It's a massive project
which I am enjoying working on. The vast majority of my collection will now
be in mp3 on CD's.

I know that the more you take care of your machines, the longer they will
last. I miss the neighborhood repair shop where they used to know you and
fixed your equipment and kept it going. What a sad thing this is a
throwaway world, and even people are throwaways now. Sorry.

Take care and best of luck with your audio work.

Re: question about recording books

2004-07-07 Thread mimi
You get that with older tapes which are signs of wear and tear. Also, I
noticed the NLS machines have somewhat gone down in quality. I don't mean
to denigrate our fine program, it's great, and all, but I also notice there
is loud enough tape hiss on some of the books, and I wrote NLS about it
once, and they blamed ME and my equipment. No, I know it was not, and was a
little hurt. I've been handling tapes for a long time, and I know. I
noticed some NLS books are distorted on some sides, like they had the master
turned up a bit loud. I have heard sometimes, some noise in the background,
like a fridge going or the hiss of what sounds to me like central heating
and air conditioning. Other times, I notice they took pains to reduce the
noise and clean up the audio. So not every single book is sloppy. As tapes
age, though and many hands have handled them, I noticed they lose their
highs and develop wrinkles which you can hear as the wrinkled spots pass
over the head. Someone else told me the more they put on a tape at the
slowest possible speed, the more the quality deteriorates. I don't know if
this is the case in every case. I can hear a bad tape easily. I used to
copy from tape to tape. Now, since I learned to use an encoding program, I
bypass that step and encode books right onto my hard drive to transfer onto
a CD. I have an ongoing series of talking book CD's, all mp3's.
Eventually, NLS will have to switch to digital format, as cassettes are
already on the way out. I can even see it myself, having watched cassettes
give way to blank CD's and miniddisc, and digital blanks. I don't even see
cassettes cases being sold anymore at Wal-mart. It's clear enough to me.
Well, another thing I forgot to say is I never went for the cheapest tapes.
I stayed with Maxell over the years, or TDK. No Nemerex. I avoid that
brand in blank CD's.
(I might be misspelling that one.)
Good luck. TDK is a good brand. It may be the library tape. It's old and a
bit worn.

I never think about the head alignment until I get a recorder which is a
tone higher than my master machine and then everything falls apart because I
want to hear the piece of music in the same key on the second machine as on
my master one. Quite a few times I have gotten rid of a tape player because
it is faster than I'd like. Maybe having the heads realigned would help.
