Linux tools to do ripping, encoding and other audio related activities?

2004-07-16 Thread Adrian Beech
Hi ppl,

I'm looking for some Unix (ummm, Linux) based tools that will do ripping
from a CD, encoding between audio formats and in general handle other audio
related activities. Can anyone suggest something which might fit the bill?

Thanks if you can help.

I don't understand that. Why does
Dish carrying the NHL make it natural
that Sirious carry the NHL? Sirious
carries the NFL, but Dish does not.
From all I've heard about the only
thing Dish is doing with Sirious is
 carrying Sirious's 61 music channels.

Re: installing Radium codec in CDEX

2004-07-16 Thread Kelly Pierce
CDEX is a CD ripping program. CDEX does not come with the Radium MP3 codec
installed. One needs to download it separately from a source other than
CDEX and install it. Radium is a hack of the Fraunhoffer codec. In CDEX
with Radium installed, the end user can rip CD's and create an MP3 version
of the disc contents with the quality of the Frunhoffer codec, considered to
be the best.

  hello,

I am using windows Xp. I want to install the radium Mp3 codec but am
not
sure how to do this with XP. I am familiar with the process in Windows
 98.
However, I can't find the list of codecs in XP in order to identify what
I
actually have and to set codec priorities. If someone who has installed
 the
Radium codec in Windows XP and enabled it in CDEX could tell me how to
accomplish this I would be highly appreciative.

Mimi, that sounds great. I shall be interested to hear the comparison of
Sirius and XM. I tried to download the adobe channel lineup but for whatever
reason, openbook wouldn't convert it, so if you happen to be able to get the
lineup in some kind of text format, I would like to have it!

Yeah, on the main XM receiver, which is

I activated the Sirius today, so am
feeling my way around. As soon as I
know enough to say more, I guess I'll
hold my comments. Already, I have found
the NPR feed and all the music and
sampled a little talk and discovered
their version of Radio Classics. They
play similar programming to XM's Radio
Classics, but not the same exact shows
at the same time; have not heard between
the shows yet, but I will later today.

The long wire is under the desk at the
moment and the flip part of the antenna
is resting on the slide-out shelf of my
computer desk as that is where I can
place it right now. I have both on and
side by side. This is going to be part
of my audio setup at the new place, too.

Hair bands are groups like Poison, Whitesnake, Skid Row, etc which were popular in the

that time period at least.

 For anyone interested, Sirius doesn't
have a radio like the XMPCR. There is
just some confusion because they call
some of their tuners plug and play.
This doesn't have anything to do with
the computer, it is just what they call
the tuners that you can swap around,
like from the car to home or a boom box.

I don't understand that. Why does
Dish carrying the NHL make it natural
that Sirious carry the NHL? Sirious
carries the NFL, but Dish does not.
From all I've heard about the only
thing Dish is doing with Sirious is
  carrying Sirious's 61 music channels.

Hi Mimi,
After reading your posts and talking with others, I ordered the XM Radio
PCR yesterday. I am suppose to get it on Tuesday. I see that I will have to
activate it and plan to do that online. The activation FAQ says that I can
select chanel 0 and get the receiver id. Does this work with Window-Eyes?
Will I need sighted help or can I do it all with the screen reader? Any
thing that you are aware of that I should watch for?

Also, I have looked a little bit at the program schedule on xm-radio.com.
Is that the best place to find out what is on when? Is the program guide
pretty accessible?

Thank you so much for all of your help. I am excited about getting started

 Hi Mimi and all,
i hadn't really looked into this until
now but all this discussion prompted
me to check their respective websites,
very exciting. in terms of what I've
 heard I'm especially interested in
finding out about the XM options, and
like the idea of connecting their
receiver to my computer. It seems that
many of their channels are the same as
Sirius, and I'm not sure that there
is anything about the Sirius content
that I would prefer at this point. I
live outside of New York City in an
area where there are a lot of microwave
 dishes etc., though, and haven't
figured out which way my windows face,
smile, so am wondering whether to
anticipate problems with the XM signal.
I
guess I'll have to talk to someone
locally and try to compare them but
don't
necessarily want to choose sirius just
because the feed is closer. I didn't
see disclaimers on the Sirius site
about how to set up for best results
unless that is buried in the user's
manual somewhere. Just wondered whether
anyone has used their three-day free
trial and what your experience was?
 Any thoughts and advice appreciated,
particularly for someone who has tried
or is using both, also the pros and
cons of receivers in terms of
accessibility. Feel free to write me
off list if you'd prefer. Many
 thanks.

I don't know if this will help, but I hope so: With Winamp, you can use the

That is called Replace PCR but it does
not work well with Window-Eyes, so I did
not bother with it. I'm using the
software that came with the pcr.

No need to go to channel 0 with the pcr.
When you start it up for the very first
time, the screen reader will read the i
d code and you can write it down
somewhere or record it. Once your radio
is activated, whether youd do it online
or call Listener Care by phone, you will
never see the i d screen again.

There
is no need to change to channel 0 with
the pcr. With the PCR, the only time
you'll see the 8 character receiver
code is when you first execute the XMPCR
software so write it down or record it
before you hit the OK button.
There's a piece of software that
replaces the XMPCR software that will
give
 you better access called ReplacePCR,
but I don't remember the web site.
Since I don't have the PCR any more I
haven't kept up with it, but it gives

Catraxx CD database

2004-07-16 Thread Peter Scanlon
Is anyone using this catalogue program. It seems liek it would do the
things I want, but I have just downloaded it and find it quite confusing. I
can see a list of CD titles but cannot see how to get track titles. I can
see there is a CD player, but can't get it going.

I am in the process of trying the 3
day trial. I like what I have heard,
especially the classic rock stations. I
can't find the old time radio channel to
check it out. Susan, I don't think you
would have any problems what so ever in
New York City. they probably have it
blanketed with a repeater for the
troublesome areas. I think I have to
give the edge to Xm so far.

 Hi Mimi and all,
i hadn't really looked into this until
now but all this discussion prompted
me to check their respective websites,
very exciting. in terms of what I've
 heard I'm especially interested in
finding out about the XM options, and
like the idea of connecting their
receiver to my computer. It seems that
many of their channels are the same as
Sirius, and I'm not sure that there
is anything about the Sirius content
that I would prefer at this point. I
live outside of New York City in an
area where there are a lot of microwave
 dishes etc., though, and haven't
figured out which way my windows face,
smile, so am wondering whether to
anticipate problems with the XM signal.
I
guess I'll have to talk to someone
locally and try to compare them but
don't
necessarily want to choose sirius just
because the feed is closer. I didn't
see disclaimers on the Sirius site
about how to set up for best results
unless that is buried in the user's
manual somewhere. Just wondered whether
anyone has used their three-day free
trial and what your experience was?
 Any thoughts and advice appreciated,
particularly for someone who has tried
or is using both, also the pros and
cons of receivers in terms of
accessibility. Feel free to write me
off list if you'd prefer. Many
 thanks.

 Susan
