RE: ROCKBOX

2005-12-12 Thread Aman Singer
Hi.
Yes, it does. Kiran was quite right when he said

it will read the menus and if I am not mistaken, they are
all recorded audio files and No TTS will be loaded on to the device.

Rockbox does three things in speech. It reads menus, it spells or speaks
file names, and it spells and speaks folder names. Therefore, it reads the
contents of the screen in certain circumstances. However, it is not a screen
reader in the conventional sense, and it uses recorded voice files,
generally included in the firmware, to speak the display.

Re: Soundcard suggestion

2005-12-12 Thread Lois Goodine
I'm not using a laptop. But on my desktop machine with Windows XP, I have
an Audigy 2 and I really like it. For one thing it is a 24-bit card and the
voice recordings I've done with it have no background noise to speak of. I
have the Soundblaster Live Value card on an older machine withWin98 and when
I voice record with it, there's a gravelly sound that I don't like at all.
In all fairness, I really don't know whether that sound is coming from the
card itself or something in the system. But in any case I think you'll like
the Audigy 2.

Soundcard suggestion

2005-12-12 Thread Kiran Kaja
Hi all,

I am planning to buy the CREATIVE LABS PCMCIA Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS
Notebook Sound Card available at

http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/ProductDetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&cs=19&sku=A0410859&category_id=5436

This is to solve a problem with my Dell Inspiron 700m which makes a lot of
hissing sound when the microphone is being used. Apparently this is a common
problem on this model laptops and Dell are not doing anything to address it.

Your suggestions/comments on the above mentioned soundcard are really
appreciated.

Thanks,

Re: ROCKBOX

2005-12-12 Thread Kiran Kaja
I don't think it will do that. From what I read on the Rockbox site (some 8
or 9 months ago), it will read the menus and if I am not mistaken, they are
all recorded audio files and No TTS will be loaded on to the device. Also
there was a way of making a text file or playlist of the songs on the device
and generating the audio files for these titles which could then be
announced on the device. I may be completely wrong though.

how to get the library to search in winamp

2005-12-12 Thread Marty Rimpau
Hi all, it never occurred to me, but if your winamp library will not
search, try moving your mouse pointer to one of the catagories, and
left clicking, and then, your search results will be available. I
never thought of this, until somebody pointed this out on the winamp
for the blind list, and subsiquent to version 5.11, I never had to do
this, so it never occurred to me, so you will get at least 1000
stations in that search area, and you cannot increase that number as
nullsoft a o l has put a cap on the server to limit the number of
stations to search for, so I put mine at 1000 stations, and now, at
least, my library works, but why I never thought to left click until
somebody pointed it out, I'll never know.

No, it just uses a couple of recorded files to read menus and spell file
and directory names. One can also create prompts, so that certain file
and directory names aren't just spelled but read normally. One has to
speak those prompts or use a software synth.

RE: Transferring Vinyl Records to CD Or harddrive

2005-12-12 Thread Reed Poynter
I have some old tapes and records that I want to put on to cd.
So, I had the same questions a couple of weeks ago.

What I did:
Go to http://jfwlite.com/programs.html and download and install the GoldWave
JAWS scripts.
Go to http://www.goldwave.com/ and download and install the latest trial
version of GoldWave.
Read C:\Program Files\GoldWave\GoldWave.htm. Appendix D gives an example of
copying records.

Hello!

I recently purchased a program called "Rip Vinyl" from out of England. The
menu items seem to work okay, but as soon as I try to use it to select my
source, say mike or line-in, the programs locks up my system and I can't get
out of it, except my rebooting the machine entirely. I paid ten bucks for
the program so I am not worried about it, but is there another such program
out there that is accessible? I actually want to rip Casettes to my hard
drive and then onto MP3 discs. I heard mention of a program called Audacity
(free I hear). How accessible is this one?

Hi all

What exactly are the advantages of using rockbox firmware? This is not
clear to me at present. I know that it has speech, but what exactly does
the firmware tell you?
Does it actually read the contents of the screen?

Strange Out of Phase sound with Creative External sound card

2005-12-12 Thread Jim Fettgather
Hello to the list.
After having purchased a Creative 24 bit USB external sound card, and after
having installed the software, correctly I hope, everything is coming out of
the speakers in a strange sounding way, kind of like its out of phase, or
with a very slight delay between the left and right channels.
I cannot seem to find any interface to change audio settings, and there is
certainly nothing in volume control to address this issue.
Any hints on getting this card to sound normal?
Thanks.

Yes, sort-of. I don't know if it actually reads what's on the screen,
but it does tell you, in an abbreviated sort of way, where you are in
your folders and files tree, and the whole way the unit operates is
different from the normal way.

Well, still no happiness re docs, but I did find the boot loader and
patch procedure which I heretofore did not have or even know existed.
Found the instructions for upgrading / replacing the firmware, too,
and they're pretty straightforward but do require sighted assistance.

Fw: Daisybook problems.

2005-12-12 Thread Anders Holmberg
HEllO!
I have a really strange daisy-book reading problem.
I am trying to read a daisy-book on my computer with easereader.
It works just fine until i come to chapter 3, then the program locks up and
i have to restart the whole computer.
So i tired to read the same book in my victor reader wave.
THere was no problems reading that chapter on my victor.
So i then put it in to my computer and copied it to my hard drive and the
 same problems appears.
THen i cahnged from easereader to a free daisyreader called tpb-reader
 whithn now luck.
I can say that i can move to the next part of the book with booth
easereader
 and tpb-reader.
And then move back to chapter for with som fiddling.
 But chapter 3 wont read.
Thow al .smil documents seems to be there and all mp3-files too.
 SO i am really confused.
So if anyone here as any ideas i would be glad to hear from you.
 THanks in advance.
 /Anders.
