Well, there is exactly all the things you say there isn't. You might try
going through the preferences before you spout off like that.

really? tell me, friend, is it free to burn mp3 cds? no. And, no again, you
can't make mp3 conversions in what I'm talking about. Real player saves its
library in some unknown directory to start with, and it saves from a cd in
.rm or some such format. I don't see an mp3 conversion hear, anyway. Unless
you pay for it, probably.

Now, why would you say something like that. Of course Replayer allows
 .mp3
 conversions.

I think its stupid that real player doesn't allow .mp3 conversion, but
 that
is about the only setback I can see, although you have to pay for some
things which is even more of a drag. I stil like winamp, though, but I use
meedia player for leasure music listening since its real easy to make
 playlists in.

 Hi Tyler.

There's plenty of references to using OGG plug-ins in media player - just
google it. As for the real format, well that's just too proprietary and
will never be supported widely by portable devices and is a pain to
 convert
so that's a non starter for me even if it is the best player in the
 world.

 ahem...

I'd have to say that real player would win against playing all filetypes
even though it may be hard to get used to. Its easy to make a playlist,
 and
at least in my experience its a good all-around player. You can rip
 music
from real player, too. It it doesn't get much simpler: put a cd into the
tray and have it rip to your library automaticly. Only problem is that
 its
real format which is a drag. Not to argue or anything but I haven't seen
 a
big difference in winamp and windows meedia player, though. Winamp plays
.ogg. Is that the only player that does? Or is there a pluggin for wmp?
 thanks

  Hi Brandon.

Don't completely disagree with your points below - very valid.
  However,
 I
don't think it gets much easier to rip a CD than placing a CD in the
  drawer
and having it automatically ejected less than 2 minutes later having
 been
ripped to the format of your choice which once set as your default
  will
stick. You're free to do as much or as little with your computer
  while
media player is ripping too. I personally ripped with CDEX for years
 but
was converted over to media player due to CDEX's lack of support for
  modern
formats and, in particular, the format I use most often, lossless WMA.
 I
haven't regretted it. Also bear in mind that the free version of CDEX
 is
ancient now and the current version is not free unlike media player
  10.

As far as playback goes, try playing a concept album where the tracks
 run
into each other or a live album in both winamp and media player 10.
  You'll
see that media player wins hands down in providing a seemless
  listening
experience. As for quality, it's very subjective but I do think that
  media
player does a better job with WMA than winamp. I suppose that's not a
surprise given it's a microsoft player playing a microsoft format?

windows media player isn't nearly the best choice for cd ripping. you

  is
focused on ripping and allows you to convert into mp3 much easier

Winamp Stereo Indicator?

2006-06-09 Thread Dana S. Leslie
I'm told that, in Winamp, there is a visual indicator of when the currently
playing track is in stereo. Is there any equivalent indicator that is
accessible to the blind? I know about the track info dialogue, ins-shift-T.
But this is not quite what I'm looking for. It reports Number of channels:
2, so long as there are two channels, even if they are both mono channels,
as in many of the older monaural recordings I own. I'm looking for something
to indicate when a track is in true stereo (rather than two-channel mono),
to backstop my own ears.

Thanks.

There should be a distiction made between being able to listen to Internet

this is probably one of the strangest streams I've ever heard. If
you fall asleep with FX Radio on, be prepared to have some very very
  strange dreams indeed.

At 06:04 PM 6/8/2006, you wrote:
What is FX Radio? Well, it's a concept that Derek Lane and I came up
with last summer when we were both rather bored.
Basically, it's the result of what happens when you load three
instances of winamp equipped with crossfaders, then load a whole ton
of high quality sound effects libraries into each winamp, making
sure, of course, that everything is randomized.
The sequence of events that can happen as a result of this are
rather strange, and many interesting things can happen to your mind
as a result of listening to the random combinations of odd things that
 occur.

Have you ever seen a bird driving a car under water, all the while
being shot at by a telephone? Or, perhaps, little kids playing in
underwater construction sites? How about frogs that make things
explode, sheep making things blow up, or machine guns blasting
through a calm cafe, all the while everyone seems to be oblivious to
the fact that they are being shot at, and, in fact, don't seem to
 mind very much?
All these things can and have been known to happen on FX Radio, all
sound effects, all the time, 24 hours a day!

To tune in, you will need a streaming media player compatible with
AAC+ streaming, such as Winamp (5.1 or higher, except 5.22 which has
a bug that breaks AAC streams), VLC Mediaplayer, or Foobar 2000.

If you have a compatible player, go to one of the following addresses:
 shoutcast: http://fx.pdaudio.net:80
 icecast: http://tbrn.net:/fx.aac

Note: If you are using the Thompson mp3 pro decoder for Winamp, the
shoutcast stream will not work unless it is disabled. The icecast
feed will, however, since the .aac extention will not be passed off
 to the mp3 pro decoder.

The bandwidth is low enough such that you can listen with either a
dial-up or broadband connection. Either way, you'll still get the
same great quality that AAC+ streaming provides.

Also, as the shoutcast server is on port 80, this means you can
listen to FX Radio behind any proxy server that only allows access
to http, such as universities and other institutions. Yes, a nice
distraction during class might be good, don't you think?
Why not freak out your friends, classmates or co-workers while
you're at it? Maybe all of the above?

Close your eyes, put on some headphones, tune in, and get ready for
a very strange, and altogether different experience!
 It's FX Radio! No, really?

Subject: Winamp Stereo Indicator?

I'm told that, in Winamp, there is a visual indicator of when the
 currently
playing track is in stereo. Is there any equivalent indicator that is
accessible to the blind? I know about the track info dialogue,
 ins-shift-T.
But this is not quite what I'm looking for. It reports Number of
 channels:
2, so long as there are two channels, even if they are both mono
 channels,
as in many of the older monaural recordings I own. I'm looking for
 something
to indicate when a track is in true stereo (rather than two-channel mono),
 to backstop my own ears.

 Thanks.

Hello!
Its a kind of auto repeater.
Lets say that your audio card cant handle recording of internet
audiostreams.
Which my soundcard can not do.
THen you use it to virtually connect a virtual audio card and then you can
set goldwave to take the recording from the virtual audio card which seems
to have a what you hear feature.
But still you can listen to the stream.
Instead of playing around with real cables.
I cant explain it better.

Re: WinAmp

2006-06-09 Thread Chris Skarstad
hi. With the current version, 5.23, I see absolutely no reason why
you shouldn't be able to use it effectively. The only problem, as
you so rightly said Steve, is the media library. However, it is
entirely possible to use
http://www.shoutcast.com
to search for, and listen to exactly the same radio stations that you
would be able to find in the media library. In fact, the exact same
listings are used. So, it is completely safe to download version 5.23 from
http://whitestick.co.uk/download.html
Even better, the direct link to 5.23 is

http://whitestick.co.uk/progs/winamp523_full.exe
Note! If you're using a previous version in the 5.2 series of
releases, it'll recognize that and the first choice you'll see on the
install screen is called previous instalation. This maintains all
your settings about what was installed before. If you're the
paranoid type however, you can always press your tab key and make
sure all the options you want checked are actually checked. For my
system I have the modern skin support, visualizations, and Winamp
agent all unchecked. Everything else is ok to keep checked. The
Winamp agent is a personal preference type of thing, so just because
i have it unchecked, doesn't mean you have to also.
It's free, so what have you got to lose, right? Of course there's
time, but we can't get that back anyways, smile.
One final note, if something awful happens, and version 5.23 doesn't
work, you can simply go back to a previous version if you keep the
installer for it around. I have all the installers going back to some
of the 2.x versions of Winamp. Hey, you never know when someone may
need them. Hope that helps.

and At 08:58 AM 6/9/2006, you wrote:
Hello friends,

the last time I tried WinAmp, the latest version had changes to the
media library and it was not accessible for listening to internet radio
etc. Can anyone tell me if this is still the case or if there is
modified scripts or anything to resolve the problem?

Many thanks in anticipation,

Steve.

Hopefully speech friendly, and able to be flexible with recording

I can't comment on his telephone software but I use his tone generator and

 Hi,

If you hit alt 3 and then hit shift tab and then down arrow, it will read
different things about the file if it's in stereo joint stereo mono bit
 rate
 etc etc.

 Subject: Winamp Stereo Indicator?

I'm told that, in Winamp, there is a visual indicator of when the
 currently
playing track is in stereo. Is there any equivalent indicator that is
accessible to the blind? I know about the track info dialogue,
 ins-shift-T.
But this is not quite what I'm looking for. It reports Number of
 channels:
2, so long as there are two channels, even if they are both mono
 channels,
as in many of the older monaural recordings I own. I'm looking for
 something
to indicate when a track is in true stereo (rather than two-channel
 mono),
 to backstop my own ears.

 Thanks.

Re: Answring Machine software

2006-06-09 Thread Bob Nelson

Try www.talkingcallerid.com

Jonathan Mosen did a review of this program on Main Menu some time ago.

Talking Caller ID - Caller ID Software featuring Talking, Paging, Email,
Voice Mail, Blocking, Text-to-speech, Eliminate Telemarketers

Talking Caller ID is a shareware program that actually talks to you, telling
you

who is calling before you pick up the phone.

Version 6 has a revolutionary new feature which will virtually eliminate

telemarketers. The program will actually send a special message to

telemarketer's auto dialers which will instruct them to remove your number
from

their calling lists forever. By law, they have to remove your number or
they

can be heavily fined. The program will stop telemarketers and give you many

more options than products such as the TeleZapper and The Call Screener. A

voice modem that is 100% TAPI compliant and caller id capable is required to
use

the new features.

The program also includes a full featured answering machine with
customizable outgoing messages for each caller if desired. For example if
your Mom is calling you, the message could say Hi Mom, I'm over at John's
house and will be home about six, if you need me call 555-1212. She is
the only one that will ever hear that message because the program knows it
is her from the caller id information. It also includes female voice
recordings for incoming announcements and also outgoing answering machine
messages. Network

broadcasting of caller id information is now also supported.

TuCows has awarded Talking Caller ID its highest 5 cow rating. Check it
out.

A Talking Caller ID license is $39.95. You can now purchase Talking Caller
ID

with lifetime upgrades for only $69.95. If you are already a registered
user,

you can purchase lifetime upgrades to Talking Caller ID for $49.95.

Looking for recommendations on Telephone Answering Machine Software.
Hopefully speech friendly, and able to be flexible with recording
incoming and outbound messages, and would be nice if it had Caller ID
to direct callers to certain message boxes.

So, do you see much in this release that we can actually use with speech

I'll probably do the upgrade, but not much of a gain.

What is FX Radio? Well, it's a concept that Derek Lane and I came up with
last summer when we were both rather bored.
Basically, it's the result of what happens when you load three instances
of winamp equipped with crossfaders, then load a whole ton of high quality
sound effects libraries into each winamp, making sure, of course, that
 everything is randomized.
The sequence of events that can happen as a result of this are rather
strange, and many interesting things can happen to your mind as a result
of listening to the random combinations of odd things that occur.

Have you ever seen a bird driving a car under water, all the while being
shot at by a telephone? Or, perhaps, little kids playing in underwater
construction sites? How about frogs that make things explode, sheep making
things blow up, or machine guns blasting through a calm cafe, all the
while everyone seems to be oblivious to the fact that they are being shot
at, and, in fact, don't seem to mind very much?
All these things can and have been known to happen on FX Radio, all sound
effects, all the time, 24 hours a day!

To tune in, you will need a streaming media player compatible with AAC+
streaming, such as Winamp (5.1 or higher, except 5.22 which has a bug that
breaks AAC streams), VLC Mediaplayer, or Foobar 2000.

The icecast feed
will, however, since the .aac extention will not be passed off to the mp3
 pro decoder.

The bandwidth is low enough such that you can listen with either a dial-up
or broadband connection. Either way, you'll still get the same great
 quality that AAC+ streaming provides.

Also, as the shoutcast server is on port 80, this means you can listen to
FX Radio behind any proxy server that only allows access to http, such as
universities and other institutions. Yes, a nice distraction during class
might be good, don't you think?
Why not freak out your friends, classmates or co-workers while you're at
it? Maybe all of the above?

Close your eyes, put on some headphones, tune in, and get ready for a very
 strange, and altogether different experience!
 It's FX Radio! No, really?

FX Radio behind any proxy server that only allows access to http, such as
universities and other institutions. Yes, a nice distraction during class
might be good, don't you think?
Why not freak out your friends, classmates or co-workers while you're at
it? Maybe all of the above?

Close your eyes, put on some headphones, tune in, and get ready for a very
 strange, and altogether different experience!
 It's FX Radio! No, really?

Re[2]: Answring Machine software

2006-06-09 Thread Patrick Perdue
Hello Bob,

On Friday, June 9, 2006, 3:37:48 PM, you bellowed the following:
 Try www.talkingcallerid.com

I have this program, and it's great. However, it's a bit hard to find a
modem that actually properly supports caller ID. Also, the default wave
files that come with this program are quite bad.

Hello Pete. I'd check out the fine software from:

Yep. I've used the NCH IVM Answering Attendant. It's very nice and
configurable, actually one of the best answering systems I've ever seen
for windows.

Really strange behaviour.

2006-06-09 Thread Anders Holmberg
HellO!
I have goldwave here on my computer.
And an m-audio delta audiophile 192 soundcard.
When connecting to the line in i can hear the sound comming through.
And its been recorded rather low.
BUt when i try to raise the volume for the linein fro 0 to 50 or what ever then
the next time i go in to the control properties window it is back on 0 again.
So the adjustment doesn't take effect.
Has anybody heard of this or is it only me having this problem.
/Anders.
