portable xm radios

2007-03-25 Thread Paul Oeser
I have had my XMPCR for about 4 years and really enjoy it. Now since
prices are more reasonable I'm thinking about getting a portable XM
radio. Since they have discontinued the Delphi MyFi It seems I have
2 choices. It is either the portable XM radios with MP3 players or
the Delphi receivers with the portable kits that you wair or carry.
Has any one gotten a portable xm radio lately? Which XM would be the

Rick,

Just a note to give you a little info about Thunder that you apparently did
not know when you did your Thunder demo.

The way to save your speech settings in Thunder is:

Before hitting the OK in the settings menu you press alt + F and you
will get a list of saving choices. Once you save your new settings Thunder
will come up using your new settings every time you reload the software.
Also, you can turn off the musical tones by unchecking use music in the
settings menu.

Subject: Skipping recordings

I've had a problem with recording using my soundblaster audigy 2 for a
while. I've got around it by selecting microsoft sound mapper for input
 and
output, but nevertheless, I'd like to get to the bottom of it.
If I select SB audigy, I record something, but when I come to play back,
bits are missing. After a while, I discover that this is not a playback
problem, but happens during the recording. I have done the following:
 Defragged the hard drive.
 Unloaded antivirus software.
 Removed any memory hungry programs.
I always use a hardware synthesizer.

 Any ideas,

 Thanks,

 Dave.

Re: Another XP Media Center Question.

2007-03-25 Thread pete gurney
hello jim,

yes there are many different versions available.
there are internal pci models plus USB models that are available like a
memory stick or as a box with a USB lead coming off of it.
but probably the best ones on the market are the nebula models.
they all support audio description transmissions for both listening to live
and for recording.
this obviously depends on where you are in the world, but they do work in
several countries and they are listed on their website:
www.nebula-electronics.co.uk
they also are aware of the needs of visually impaired people and make their
software as accessible as possible.
they are also about to launch a new home media centre that has 3 digital
tuners plus a 500 gb hard drive within it that will work by connecting
direct to a tv, via a wired network, or by wi-fi to your pc's or to tv's
around the home if you connect one of their thin client receivers to the
tv.
i also believe that their adapters are the only ones on the market that are
able to receive high definition signals.

the other major manufacturer of digital pc adapters is hauppauge and their
international site is:
www.hauppauge.com
but their models don't support audio description.

pete.

Hi Folks:

Is it possible to acquire a tv tuner card that will record digital TV?

Thanks all over the place gang.

Hi, sorry, no I do not have a real description. I only know the buttons I
use and those I found by trial and error. I typically use the row of 4
buttons above the number pad. The first one takes you directly to your
scheduled or list of recorded programs, the second one takes you directly to
the Guide, and the third on takes you directly to live tv. I do not know
 what the fourth one does.

I also use the circle found in the middle of the remote. This pretty much
acts as you would expect, like arrow keys with the center being like the
 enter key.

I also use the large round button that is found directly above the circle.
This is the play button. There are 2 small thin horizontal buttons
directly to the left and right of the play button. These are rewind and
fast forward. Above the play button there are 3 small round buttons at
positions 10:00, 12:00, and 2:00. The right most of the 3 buttons is pause,
the middle on is stop, and the left most one is record for on the fly
recording. If you record something with this button, just press stop to
stop it and you will get a dialog that doesn't really speak except for the
yes and no buttons. It is asking you if you really want to stop the
recording I think. Use your left and right arrow keys in the circle to
 choose.

Of Cures, you can also use any of the keyboard shortcuts I already posted to
 do any of this.

Sorry I don't know every button, but maybe this will get you started.

 Jim,

Although I mainly use Window Eyes, it will basically be the same with
 Jaws.
I will include a list of hotkeys below. Watching and recording is easy
 and
works well once you get the hang of it. There is lots of stuff that
 doesn't
speak like most dialogs and unfortunately, most program info displays, but
navigating through the program guide, recording, playing back recordings
 and
all of that stuff thankfully works quite well. Just check out these
 hotkeys
then get in there and poke around a while and you will see what I mean.
 In
addition, if you have a full fledged media center pc, with built-in tuner
and remote, the remote works very well and many times easier than using
 the
keyboard. Note that these keyboard shortcuts along with shortcuts for all
MS products can be found here.

Any luck with using last.fm?

2007-03-25 Thread Lynn Schneider
Has anyone successfully used www.last.fm to listen to music? Between
this site, slacker.com and pandora.com being inaccessible, I am
really starting to get discouraged. I am looking for some good
streaming audio to listen to at work. For some reason, ACB Radio and
Live365.com's media streams will not play on my PC at work, although
the ones at sky.fm and Yahoo will. I cannot install Winamp or play
AOL Radio because it requires installation of an app and I do not
have administrative rights at work, so this will not work either. I
am just a little tired of the same ole CDs and audio streams and was
hoping to find another service I could use.

Thanks for any insights.

It will indeed be sad if the proposed copyright provisions mandating

 Hello,

After going around in circles trying to resolve my goldwave issue with no
success I decided to replace my SB Live with a brand new SBPCI512 card and
got no sound at all. I tried another card and got the same results. The
cards didn't even show up in device manager, but work fine in another
computer. Both computers are running XP Home. Could there be something in

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Easy CD Extractor Version 10.0.6 is now Available

2007-03-25 Thread Steve Pattison
Hi Lynn and others,

I use Window-Eyes but exactly the same problem exists and
unfortunately it hasn't been fixed in Easy CD DA Extractor version
10.0.6. This is one of these very frustrating situations where
something has been made completely inaccessible just so the list of
tracks to be ripped from the CD looks better visually. I also tried
ripping a track using Winamp Pro and found that was very accessible
and ripping a track was very easy but I know this still doesn't solve

tracks to be ripped from the CD looks better visually. I also tried

 Hello,

After going around in circles trying to resolve my goldwave issue with no
success I decided to replace my SB Live with a brand new SBPCI512 card
 and
got no sound at all. I tried another card and got the same results. The
cards didn't even show up in device manager, but work fine in another
computer. Both computers are running XP Home. Could there be something
 in
bios preventing any other cards from being recognized? I have no idea
 what
to try next and still cannot record anything with goldwave, not even

the microphone. The only thing it records is whatever Jaws is saying.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

OK, I'm probably speaking completely out of turn, but here goes.
Just a question. is it possible that the what you hear option has
been killed by Microsoft? I know that this has happened in Vista, at
least to those computers that have been updated with new drivers
written to do so. I'm just throwing this out, because I am hoping the
answer is a big NO! g. But you never know. I fully expect for my
trusty Audigy Platinum to be crippled any day now. I really don't
know if this is even happening to users of XP, I'm just kind of
fishing for answer. Can't you tell?

hello jim,

yes there are many different versions available.
there are internal pci models plus USB models that are available like a
memory stick or as a box with a USB lead coming off of it.
but probably the best ones on the market are the nebula models.
they all support audio description transmissions for both listening to live
and for recording.
this obviously depends on where you are in the world, but they do work in
several countries and they are listed on their website:
www.nebula-electronics.co.uk
they also are aware of the needs of visually impaired people and make their
software as accessible as possible.
they are also about to launch a new home media centre that has 3 digital
tuners plus a 500 gb hard drive within it that will work by connecting
direct to a tv, via a wired network, or by wi-fi to your pc's or to tv's
around the home if you connect one of their thin client receivers to the
tv.
i also believe that their adapters are the only ones on the market that are
able to receive high definition signals.

the other major manufacturer of digital pc adapters is hauppauge and their
international site is:
www.hauppauge.com
but their models don't support audio description.

pete.

Hi Folks:

Is it possible to acquire a tv tuner card that will record digital TV?

Thanks all over the place gang.

yes the veronica has very professional audio quality. I have had mine sense

TerriLynne,

The C-Crane transmitter broadcasts to all radios in its range that are
tuned
to its broadcast frequency. The broadcast frequency of the transmitter is
selected up or down using 2 push buttons on the unit. If the unit is
unplugged, and it has no battery, the frequency resets to 107.5 Mhz. You
can use this trick if you lose track of the frequency setting and cannot
find it broadcasting on your radio. The selection wraps down to 87.5 (I
think) if you press the up button when the transmitter is at 107.5.

My experience with the C-Crane transmitter is that it could not even
broadcast across a room as shipped by the company. I had to use a well
known tweak that says to peal off the label on the back, and turn the
output
control all the way up to get a good signal. After this tweak, I can pick
up the signal all over my apartment.

Regarding wireless speakers, Advent sells several models of 900Mhz wireless
speakers. I think the models are aw810, aw820 and aw870. They have a very
long range. You can either buy 2 speakers and set them to left and right
stereo, or buy one speaker and set it to mono. These speakers are widely
available on the internet.

RE: Easy CD Extractor Version 10.0.6 is now Available

2007-03-25 Thread David Truong
Hi,

If your screen reader has a feature to define highlight colours or define
highlight bars then this will allow you to read the list of tracks to rip.
So then all you need to do then is use your powers of logic. As you
suggested, all tracks are checked by default, so pressing space on each
track will deselect it, Yes! I know it would be great if there was a way to
let you know what you have selected or deselected but the above with a
little use of your memory should get you by until the author makes that part
of the program accessible.

Hi Steve and others. I had used and loved this program for years,
but unless I want to extract all tracks on a CD, which I have been
doing, I cannot get Jaws to read me the track listings so I can check
and uncheck the ones I want. I didn't see anything about this
problem being fixed. I am wondering if it has been fixed or if
anyone has found a work-around, as this is very disturbing to me
since I love this program so much. I am really hoping for good news on

RE: Wireless speakers

2007-03-25 Thread André van Deventer
OK interesting.

Do you run this transmitter from a line-out socket or the speaker
out/headphone socket from a soundcard? I would think that if you use the
speaker out of the soundcard, you would be limited to the quality of the
sound card amplifier?
