Looking for an Audacity tutorial

2007-04-28 Thread John Moore
I cannot find the shortcut keys anywhere. Most of them are there, but
I cannot figure out how to record, play, rewind, fast forward, or
stop. Can somebody please give me the shortcuts? Also, do I just open
a file and press Play to get it to play while recording as I need
multi-track software and I absolutely despise N-Track. Thanks for the
help.

I have used a sound blaster along with the M Audio. You will still need to
run a line from the line out of the m audio to the line in on the sound

Other Internet TV Programs

2007-04-28 Thread Steve Pattison
Following on from my message about JLC's Internet TV program another
good, free program which lets you listen to TV and radio stations on
the Internet is Solway's Internet TV and Radio Player available from
www.theabsolute.net/sware/soltvradio.html. Here are some of the
features of this program:

Listen to over a thousand free radio and TV stations online over the Internet.
Record straight to MP3.
Listen to, or watch stations directly, without having to visit web
sites and put
up with their slow-loading pages and pop-up ads.
No additional hardware is required. This software supports both
Windows Media and
Real Video, so you can play most stream formats in this one program.
Watch video in full-screen if you wish.

One of the best shareware programs I've found for listening to TV
stations on the Internet is CTube! available from
www.eastbaytech.com/ctube.htm. Accessibility isn't perfect but
CTube! is useable with Window-Eyes. CTube! costs $24 US. Here is
some information about CTube:

CTube! is the largest resource available for viewing Internet
Television and Video
PODCasts , with over 1500 channels of TV, Live Video Channels and
Webcams, plus an Internet Video Search, with over 2 million
videos. Watch UNCENSORED news, music videos, education and
entertainment channels from around the world.

Gordon, I did look at Audio Mentor, but couldn't make any sense of it. In
many cases Window-Eyes and Jaws just spoke the word button. I could open an

Re: Sound Forge With Window-Eyes

2007-04-28 Thread G. McFarlane
Hi Larry
It's not the most intuitive but you have to use the Jaws Cursor. I don't use
it much but when I have it's been easy to clean up and excite a file. If
you're used to DC6 you may just prefer using this and your experience of
which filter is good at which point. Mentor is just trying to automate the
process. You click with the jaws cursor on the start button (sighted help
may be necessary at first to label them) - once you're in the program
instructions are on screen and you click on the appropriate buttons. After a
few minutes of experimenting and understanding the logic of the buttons you
can choose to clean with different recommended filters and to excite or
enhance with appropriate filters. If you like to tweak that's possible too.
It's a good resource for bringing in files from external sources and
cleaning them fairly easily. Sometimes it's just better to use DC6 itself.
Can I ask you how you navigate long files in DC6. I tend to cut them in
Audition before loading them into DC6. I haven't found an easy way to select
areas in DC6. Have you?
While working through the dialog boxes of filters is easy I also have
difficulty in using the multi filter option. It seemsto involve a bit of
dragging and dropping. I usually settle for using the presets which in
themselves are pretty good. Have you a way of using the multitab filter?
Regards.

Hi Sharen. The best program that would change the speed of
any song without affecting your file too much is adobe
audition. Sound Forge and Goldwave, i find, will leave to
much undesirable art effects. Also, i wouldn't advise you to
change the speed of your music file other than if it was in
wav format because files like ogg or mp3 would already have
suffered from art effects as a result of conversions from
 wav. Cheers!

I want to know if this is possible? I have a file both in
 ogg and mp3
formats. Unfortunately, the speed is a little too fast. I
 can't stand
it; I want to fix it. I do have goldwave; however, I know
 I'll mess
up the sound because of the conversion. I don't know much about ogg
 file conversion.
Actually, I was hoping I could change the speed on one of
 the files
without changing the compression. Is this possible with any
 particular
program? If so, please elaborate. Thanks very much.

AMR files?

2007-04-28 Thread John Sanfilippo
Hello,

My Nokia 6682 cel phone creates A M R files which I'd like to edit in
GoldWave. When I attempt to open such files in GW, I'm offered Dialogic
vox and Ra snd as choices. Within each of these there are yet more
parameters to choose. Would anyone know just what specs to set, if any,
to open these files? Of course, a Nokia sound player will play these amr
files, but, I'd like a bit more control of the audio.

Help much appreciated,

Hi Gordon. Unfortunately I don't have any suggestions to offer in that

like to continue using DC6, of course, but I'm also looking for something
that will allow me a bit more flexibility, both in adjusting filters and in

Hi Larry
It's not the most intuitive but you have to use the Jaws Cursor. I don't
 use
it much but when I have it's been easy to clean up and excite a file. If
you're used to DC6 you may just prefer using this and your experience of
which filter is good at which point. Mentor is just trying to automate the
process. You click with the jaws cursor on the start button (sighted help
may be necessary at first to label them) - once you're in the program
instructions are on screen and you click on the appropriate buttons. After
 a
few minutes of experimenting and understanding the logic of the buttons
 you
can choose to clean with different recommended filters and to excite or
enhance with appropriate filters. If you like to tweak that's possible
 too.
It's a good resource for bringing in files from external sources and
cleaning them fairly easily. Sometimes it's just better to use DC6 itself.
Can I ask you how you navigate long files in DC6. I tend to cut them in
Audition before loading them into DC6. I haven't found an easy way to
 select
 areas in DC6. Have you?
While working through the dialog boxes of filters is easy I also have
difficulty in using the multi filter option. It seemsto involve a bit of
dragging and dropping. I usually settle for using the presets which in
themselves are pretty good. Have you a way of using the multitab filter?
 Regards.

Strange Winamp 5.34 Behavior

2007-04-28 Thread Wes Derby
Hi, All.

Just updated to the official release of Winamp 5.34 (using Pro Version). I'm
noticing an odd thing that I've never had happen before. In the library, I
often use the search function since my library is so large and not everything
is propperly tagged due to the various rippers and taggers I've used over the
years. Anyhow, when I type something into the search box, anytime I press the
spacebar, it inserts the space like it should, but also inserts the letter X.
Anyone else having this problem or know what might be causing it?

Also, I reverted back to the Winamp scripts that came with JAWS 8.0.1177...No
change; the library still only reads the last letter of each option in the Tree
View such as Audio, Video and stuff...They're both O. Usually, if I use Say
Current Line, I can get the whole name spoken, but not always. I deleted the
scripts I'd downloaded from JFWLite and, as I said, went back to the default
scripts...No change.

Any ideas anyone has would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Sound Forge With Window-Eyes

2007-04-28 Thread G. McFarlane
Hi Again Larry
Have you considered Adobe Audition 1.5 (the latest is pretty inaccessible)
It works on all fronts including multitrack recording and playback, up till
jaws 7.0 or 7.1 Even selecting is fairly easy. Its noise reduction
andpop/click remover, and its clip restoration if over recorded are good -
each of these and of course the other filters and exciters, etc. are
accessible and fairly flexible as to adjustment. Probably DC6 has the edge
on cleaning, but if you happen to hit upon the right combination in Audition
it can sometimes work better than the opposition. It's also pretty navigable
when it comes to files.
Apologies if you know it already.

 Hi Allison,

Yes, it is very accessible using Window-Eyes and should work well
with other Windows screen readers such as Hal and NVDA.

:Audacity 1.3.2 GuideAudacity 1.3.2 Guide
A guide for Jaws users, written by Chorlton Workshop for hsbp.
Introduction
Audacity is a free multi-track audio editor. You can use it for recording,
simple editing of single tracks, or more advanced editing involving multiple
tracks.
This guide is for the 1.3.2 beta version of Audacity. The reason for choosing
the beta version is that a lot of work has been done since the last stable
version (1.2.6) to make Audacity easier to use for users of screen readers.
There is still work to be done in this area, but version 1.3.2 is much easier
to
use than version 1.2.6. The downside of using the beta version is that it still
contains several bugs, and these are mentioned throughout the guide. Audacity
1.3.2 can be downloaded from audacity.sourceforge.net.
Audacity is an extremely powerful program, and this is only an introductory
guide. For more information see the Audacity website, and the Audacity 1.3.2
User Manual which is under construction. Note that the Help in Audacity is
inaccessible to Jaws.
Projects
The objects which Audacity edits are known as projects. So projects are
equivalent to documents in Microsoft Word, and workbooks in Microsoft Excel.
An Audacity project simply consists of a number of tracks. There are a number of
different types of track in Audacity: audio, label, and time. However, the
latter two are inaccessible to Jaws users, and so this guide will only describe
the use of audio tracks. For many simple tasks you'll probably only have one
track in a project.
You can save an Audacity project using the Audacity project file format, and
this preserves all the tracks in the project. However, you only need to save a
project in this format if you intend to continue working on the project in the
future.
Cursor
Audacity has a cursor to specify a particular time during the audio, and this
is
similar to the cursor in Microsoft Word. The cursor in Audacity is used for
defining times such as: the start of playback, the position where you want to
start selecting a time range, and the place where audio is pasted from the
clipboard.
Contents
The remaining sections of the guide are as follows:
  Main window.
  Opening an audio file.
  Saving audio.
  Playback.
  Toolbars.
  Track table.
  Selection bar.
  Moving the cursor.
  Selecting audio.
  Basic editing.
  More advanced editing.
  Recording.
  Preferences.
Main window
Main components
Title bar. When the window contains an unnamed project, for example, when you
first start Audacity, then the text in the title bar is Audacity. When the
window contains a named project, then the text is the name of the project. To
read the title bar press INSERT + T.
  Menu bar.
  Toolbars.
Track table. This contains the tracks which make up the project.
Selection bar. This contains controls for reading and setting the cursor
position and the start and end/length of any selected time range.
Status bar. When the mouse is over a control in the interface then often the
status bar gives help on using the control, though this is of little interest
to Jaws users. During a recording, the status bar gives the disk space which
remains for recording. When there is no text in the status bar, then if you
read the status bar, then Jaws reads the contents of the controls on the
selection bar (together with a spurious “graphic 60034”). To read the status
bar, press INSERT + PAGE DOWN.
Moving around the window
As in any window, to move to the menu bar press ALT, and to leave it press
  ESC.
Pressing CTRL + F6 moves you around the following components: Toolbars, Track
table, Selection bar, Toolbars, etc. Pressing CTRL + SHIFT + F6 moves you
  around in the opposite direction.
Opening an audio file
To open either an audacity project file or a standard audio file, use the Open
dialog, which is on the File menu (or CTRL + O).
When you first open Audacity, the window contains an empty project, and so when
you open an audio file, it opens

Re: Sound Forge With Window-Eyes

2007-04-28 Thread Larry N
Actually, I've never tried audition. That is a good thought. Since I work
with records ranging from home recorded 78s to albums in mint condition to
45s and cassettes, and open reels that threaten to fall apart with every
touch, I like to have aa wide assortment of editors on hand. It's been my
experience that different editors can work better with different media.
Thanks again for the idea.

 Hi Again Larry
Have you considered Adobe Audition 1.5 (the latest is pretty inaccessible)
It works on all fronts including multitrack recording and playback, up
 till
jaws 7.0 or 7.1 Even selecting is fairly easy. Its noise reduction
andpop/click remover, and its clip restoration if over recorded are good -
each of these and of course the other filters and exciters, etc. are
accessible and fairly flexible as to adjustment. Probably DC6 has the edge
on cleaning, but if you happen to hit upon the right combination in
 Audition
it can sometimes work better than the opposition. It's also pretty
 navigable
 when it comes to files.
Apologies if you know it already.

Hi Gordon. Unfortunately I don't have any suggestions to offer in that
regard. This is why I'm looking at adding something else to my system.
 I'd
like to continue using DC6, of course, but I'm also looking for something
that will allow me a bit more flexibility, both in adjusting filters and
 in
automating certain restoration aspects. I considered Sound Forge, but
 aside
from the filters added in with Noise reduction 2.0, I see no advantages
 for
someone who works with records of all types as well as cassettes. I do
 use
GoldWave a lot, but fI would like to see if there is something out there
that will offer that sort of accessibility with a bit more speed.

Hi Larry
It's not the most intuitive but you have to use the Jaws Cursor. I don't
 use
it much but when I have it's been easy to clean up and excite a file. If
you're used to DC6 you may just prefer using this and your experience of
which filter is good at which point. Mentor is just trying to automate
 the
process. You click with the jaws cursor on the start button (sighted
 help
may be necessary at first to label them) - once you're in the program
instructions are on screen and you click on the appropriate buttons.
 After
 a
few minutes of experimenting and understanding the logic of the buttons
 you
can choose to clean with different recommended filters and to excite or
enhance with appropriate filters. If you like to tweak that's possible
 too.
It's a good resource for bringing in files from external sources and
cleaning them fairly easily. Sometimes it's just better to use DC6
 itself.
Can I ask you how you navigate long files in DC6. I tend to cut them in
Audition before loading them into DC6. I haven't found an easy way to
 select
 areas in DC6. Have you?
While working through the dialog boxes of filters is easy I also have
difficulty in using the multi filter option. It seemsto involve a bit of
dragging and dropping. I usually settle for using the presets which in
themselves are pretty good. Have you a way of using the multitab filter?
 Regards.

Gordon, I did look at Audio Mentor, but couldn't make any sense of it.
 In
many cases Window-Eyes and Jaws just spoke the word button. I could
 open
 an
audio file, both the demo and one of mine, but couldn't seem to do
 anything
with it. Is this an ap that should work with audio files right out of
 the
box? LOL, maybe it's me, but I get more spoken feedback with DC6
 itself.
 And
 you're right, it's a fine audio editor.
