SV: converting other file types

2009-03-31 Thread Anders Holmberg
Hi!
I use the oxelon media converter which is open source an can be found at:
http://www.oxelon.com
It puts itself in your context menu so if you're standing on an mp3 or wma
file you can select convert audio and then chooce the format you want to
convert to.

I use Switch Audio File Conversion Software from
http://www.nch.com.au/switch/index.html. You can download the trial ware
for free. When the trial period runs out, you can still convert WMA to
MP3 using the free version of Switch. Since you're converting from one
lossless format to another, will result in a loss of sound quality. It
isn't clear whether this would be noticeable or not though. That would
depend in part on the type of audio and the bit rates and sampling rates
used in the source and target files.

Where do you get it and what is the cost? In the conversion process
 do you
 lose any of the quality?

Thanks all for the information. I personally didn't interpret do
not decompile, disassemble, or reverse engineer the Audible Content
as prohibiting me from converting the media format. Maybe if it had
said electronic content instead of audible content I might have
interpreted it differently. After all, you are allowed to download
 it, stream it and
write it to CD for your own personal use. Granted, I might have read
this with a pair of rose colored glasses on.

I guess my main point was two fold. First, I saw quite a few sites
 which
claimed that their product was a legal way to convert Audible files
 into
other formats and other sites which talked about what was and wasn't
legal given Audible's terms and conditions, the DMAC, fair use and
 court
cases, which lead me to believe that it isn't clear what is and isn't
 legal in this case.

Second, as others have stated on this list, I doubt any company or
law enforcement agency would prosecute anyone who was making copies
for their own personal use and was scrupulous about making sure
those copies didn't end up in anyone else's hands. Note that I also
feel it's clear that sharing these files, even with a few friends,
is illegal, although maybe not unethical.

 Bruce,

This is an intelligent but very literal reading. I don't know
about Canada, but in the US, copyright law has a fair use
exception. There is really nothing to stop an individual from
making copies or otherwise using products they own for their own
purposes. I assume the manufacturer's purpose behind the provision
you quote is to discourage dissemination of these materials. But
if individuals don't have that intention, I doubt the manufacturer
would have any reason to care. Correct me if I'm overlooking
something. All that said, I share your concern that we all respect
copyrighted materials and use them only for ourselves and

RE: Is there an accessible MP3 player that works with Rhapsody?

2009-03-31 Thread Jamie Pauls
Route Pc to Jaws and then Jaws to PC. JFW works with Rhapsody better than
Window-Eyes at present. Also, Rhapsody support from the web has improved
considerably. I need to do a complete reworking of my Rhapsody tutorial.

Let me try to explain the Rhapsody situation a little better. First, for
$12.99 a month, a person can stream tracks to their heart's content. If one
wishes to download a track for burning to CD, it must be purchased for $0.98
or less. For $13.99 a month, tracks can be streamed and transferred to a
portable player supported by Rhapsody. If one wishes to download or burn
tracks, they still must be purchased. It is true that Rhapsody has gone to
unprotected MP3 files when purchasing, but I'm not sure how this affects the
Rhapsody To Go options mentioned above. I may need to call tech support,
wait an hour on hold, and talk to someone who doesn't speak English well and
won't have a clue what I'm trying to explain. I suspect I'm going to have to
do that, though. Pray for me all.l

Subject: Is there an accessible MP3 player that works with Rhapsody?

Greetings list:

I teach a music appreciation class at a local community college. In the fall
of this year, I am switching to a new textbook, The Musical Experience by
John Chiego. Every instructor of the class receives a year of Rhapsody to Go
which allows one to transfer songs from Rhapsody to a supported MP3 player.
Each chapter of the text has an accompanying playlist. I am familiar with
using Rhapsody and have no trouble there. I have also been playing with
Applian Technology's Replay Media Catcher program to grab the playlists and
convert them to MP3 files. Applian says this is legal, but I have to wonder
if Rhapsody would be thrilled. I will use Media Catcher if I have no other
option, but an MP3 player with attached speakers would be preferable to CDs
and a boom box anyway. Does anyone have any experience with any of the MP3
players supported by Rhapsody? Any help would be appreciated.

Nero with Vista

2009-03-31 Thread Larry
Hi there. I have a Vista system and I would like to install a version of
Nero that works on Vista and will Also work with Window-eyes and or System
Access. I would appreciate any suggestions concerning what I ought to buy.

If you think another CD burner might work better for me, I am open to
suggestions, but I do have specific needs. In my work, I need the option to
determine the length of silence between tracks. For instance, some of the
CDs that I burn for clients require track separation but 0 or 1 second gaps
between tracks. So, as well as being screen reader friendly and Vista
compliant I need to be able to dictate gap lengths between tracks.

If you feel that this discussion would not be of interest to the group in
general, please feel free to email me privately.

I would really appreciate any help you can offer, as this is one area where
Vista and I are having great difficulties in getting comfortable with each
other. And it is a decision that involves my work.

again, thanks very much in advance.

Larry

Hi it's called Text Speak but I think you'll have to Google for it.

What was the exact name of that program which was better than TextAloud?
Is it shareware?
Do you have an address?
Cheers

Hi guys! Unfortunately every one missed the point of my question. I don't
need a voice over plugin btw I already bought that one) I'm looking for
audio effects. I know gw has several effect options but I find them kind
of limited being a former sound forge and cool edit user. The presets gw
has aren't that great in my opinion and I was wondering if any one out
here had any suggestions as to some third party plugins that have fun or
good effects that are easy to use or come with a lot of presets. I know
they exist I just thought since there are so many gw users I could get
 some cool ideas.
 thanks for your help
 bb
