I was thinking it would be slow whenever you were copying files over to
or from the USB drive over that 1.1 USB connection. I'm not sure if the
access rate over a 1.1 USB connection would be so slow as to effect your
ability to play audio off a drive attached to such a port. It would
probably work, but your player may have to do a tiny bit of buffering.

There's a few things you can do to see if you have more hard drive space
out there. When you go into My computer, do you see any other drives
listed besides the C drive? If so, they may be other partitions on your
hard drive.

You can also use Windows Disk Management to see how your hard drive is
partitioned. Go to your desktop, arrow over to My Computer, and hit the
shift+f10, right mouse button or applications key to bring up the
context menu. Arrow down to Manage and hit enter. Now you can arrow down
to Storage, Disk Management and then tab over to check out how your
drive is partitioned.

You will free up space by deleting programs you aren't using, but
depending on the programs, it probably won't be very much. How much
data are you talking about transferring? Are any other partitions
besides C listed? there may be a recovery partition that you could
steal, if you don't care about ever recovering the machine or if you
already have recovery CD's burned. BTW, what OS is running on this
machine?

When you ask about additional memory, are you talking about RAM or
hard drive space? How much RAM is there now? Prices on memory and hard
drives only come down, so finding hardware for older systems can end
up costing you enough to make it worth buying a real cheap low end
system. Since it's a laptop, you'd have to replace the drive that's
there, which would mean a lot of work reinstalling Windows onto the
new hard drive, assuming you have a license and the install media for
Windows. Depending on how much RAM you have and how much the laptop
will support, you may be able to add more, but this probably won't buy
you anything when it comes to storing media files on the hard drive.
Something like Crucial.com at http://www.crucial.com/ can take you
through the RAM upgrade process.

You could use an external drive, but I think you'd find the speed
frustrating.

I second Roger's praises of this program. I have been enjoying Pandora
for the last few months on my Android phone, and for the last week on my
new iPod Touch, both of which have totally accessible apps. It's great

If you are a music lover, it is well worth the ten dollars, even if all

Greetings Folks,

With the very recent initial software release of a truly wonderful

For the uninitiated, Pandora Radio, found at:

http://www.pandora.com

is a very innovative web site, that seeks to allow users to set up
various

radio stations, based on their musical preferences, both by individual
artist and or specific genres.

The Pandora radio site is almost completely unusable by blind folks with
screen reading technology, as they rely on Adobe's extensive use of Flash
technology, to deliver all of the usable web content and adjustments to
account options and the music player.

Pandora is much more than just a radio or music web site that actually
finds
music based upon your specific and wide ranging solutions but I do not
feel
like writing all of that crap out. I am not nearly as good as my friend
Hap

Holly, is at spinning a good yarn.

Basically, the visually impaired developer of Qwitter, a third party
application layer gateway for the popular social networking site,
Twitter,

has gone and done it again with his extremely unique approach to Pandora.
Based on some Python programming skills, and some excellent use of the
Pandora very secret XML technology, he has made a completely accessible
interface to the Pandora site...

It is $10.00 which seems to be a one time purchase for as many updates as
he

can try to write, before his fingers fall off.

The developer, Chris Toth has made a truly usable interface to Pandora.
Once

you configure a few stations, either based on artist or genre, you will
never listen to Internet radio quite the same way again. No commercials,
no

speaking in between the tracks, just good music of all styles.

Pandora uses your suggestions to essentially pick songs and artists in or
close to the same musical style or genre/sound.

It is unbelievable!!!

Chris with his HOPE application has made the Pandora experience
completely

blind-friendly by eliminating having to even use the Pandora site.

A blind user cannot even independently create their initial account on
the
Pandora's.com web site. With H O P E, all all all things are usable and
all
account creation, and all of the same interactions that a sighted user
would
experience, have been built directly into Pandora's third party gateway,
H O

P E.

The H O P E program can be found at:

http://q-continuum.net/hope/

I want everyone who is interested to visit Chris's site, and ask him
questions and of course purchase the program to further the development
of

HOPE.

Believe me, from a fellow who has used Pandora since 2006, his program
was

well worth waiting for.

Check it out, and hope you enjoy the accessible experience that HOPE
brings

to Pandora.com

If anyone wants to contact the Pandora support staff, in case they have
questions or want to purchase for 36 bucks per year, a unlimited
listening

experience, please e-mail:

The subscription process is only technically open to U.S. subscribers,
unless, you happen to have a proxy gateway to make it look like you are

Re: zoom h1 digital recorder

2011-01-08 Thread Dane Trethowan
Hi!

I know someone in the U.K who just purchased one of these recorders, think he
got it from Amazon but there are other places according to him so by the sounds
of it they're readily available. I'm in Australia and I've owned one of these
nifty recorders for nearly 3 months now as the list would no doubt be aware as
I've written about it often enough both on this list and on my blog.

Now please forgive me as I'm not sure I understood the second part of your
question correctly so here's how I interpreted it along with my answer.

You asked if the Zoom H1 can be used as a microphone or line input for a
computer, in other words you're asking if the Zoom H1 can be used as a sound
device for your computer? At this time the answer's no which is a shame as it
would be damn nice though Zoom could if they wanted to "upgrade" the software
to allow this to happen as all the hardware's there.

The H1 itself will accept both line-in and microphone sources through the
"Input" socket, some adjustments may need to be made to the "Input Gain" but
that's easily done.

Re: Accessable Hard Drive for Hi Fi

2011-01-08 Thread Christopher Chaltain

What is an idiots way of finding out overal HD size please.
When you say an external drive would be slow do you mean when playing or

You will free up space by deleting programs you aren't using, but
depending on the programs, it probably won't be very much. How much data
are you talking about transferring? Are any other partitions besides C
listed? there may be a recovery partition that you could steal, if you
don't care about ever recovering the machine or if you already have
recovery CD's burned. BTW, what OS is running on this machine?

When you ask about additional memory, are you talking about RAM or hard
drive space? How much RAM is there now? Prices on memory and hard drives
only come down, so finding hardware for older systems can end up costing
you enough to make it worth buying a real cheap low end system. Since
it's a laptop, you'd have to replace the drive that's there, which would
mean a lot of work reinstalling Windows onto the new hard drive,
assuming you have a license and the install media for Windows. Depending
on how much RAM you have and how much the laptop will support, you may
be able to add more, but this probably won't buy you anything when it
comes to storing media files on the hard drive. Something like
Crucial.com at http://www.crucial.com/ can take you through the RAM
upgrade process.

You could use an external drive, but I think you'd find the speed
frustrating.

I can think of a few options. One would be to use an FM transmitter.
You could attach an FM transmitter to your PC and then broadcast the
music from your PC and pick it up on your stereo, assuming you have a
FM receiver as part of your stereo. I don't have one myself, but I'm
sure others can chime in with more details, opinions and information.

You can also use a few different technologies to broadcast music from
your PC over wifi or bluetooth to a receiver that you could then
attach to your stereo. Apple TV and Airport Express would be two such
examples, and others can speak to them

I second Roger's praises of this program. I have been enjoying Pandora
for the last few months on my Android phone, and for the last week on my

to now be able to use it on the PC.

If you are a music lover, it is well worth the ten dollars, even if all

Bud,

I also suppose you tried different sounds with no joy? You used the
preview button or what ever it is to make sure you can hear the sounds
and there's nothing wrong with the .wav files. Did you try listening to
the .wav files directly with WMP or Winamp?

Also, when you go into your volume settings, did you double check to
make sure that none of the different output sources were at 0% volume or
muted?

I know I'm tossing out the obvious here, but I don't know what else to try.

There Is HOPE For Pandora

2011-01-08 Thread Roger R. Cusson

Greetings Folks,

With the very recent initial software release of a truly wonderful Pandora
third party interface known as: HOPE, a blind-friendly approach for Pandora,
we are now on equal footing with all of the other Pandora Radio listeners
out there.

For the uninitiated, Pandora Radio, found at:

http://www.pandora.com

is a very innovative web site, that seeks to allow users to set up various
radio stations, based on their musical preferences, both by individual
artist and or specific genres.

The Pandora radio site is almost completely unusable by blind folks with
screen reading technology, as they rely on Adobe's extensive use of Flash
technology, to deliver all of the usable web content and adjustments to
account options and the music player.

Pandora is much more than just a radio or music web site that actually finds
music based upon your specific and wide ranging solutions but I do not feel
like writing all of that crap out. I am not nearly as good as my friend Hap
Holly, is at spinning a good yarn.

Basically, the visually impaired developer of Qwitter, a third party
application layer gateway for the popular social networking site, Twitter,
has gone and done it again with his extremely unique approach to Pandora.
Based on some Python programming skills, and some excellent use of the
Pandora very secret XML technology, he has made a completely accessible
interface to the Pandora site...

It is $10.00 which seems to be a one time purchase for as many updates as he
can try to write, before his fingers fall off.

The developer, Chris Toth has made a truly usable interface to Pandora. Once
you configure a few stations, either based on artist or genre, you will
never listen to Internet radio quite the same way again. No commercials, no
speaking in between the tracks, just good music of all styles.

Pandora uses your suggestions to essentially pick songs and artists in or
close to the same musical style or genre/sound.

It is unbelievable!!!

Chris with his HOPE application has made the Pandora experience completely
blind-friendly by eliminating having to even use the Pandora site.

A blind user cannot even independently create their initial account on the
Pandora's.com web site. With H O P E, all all all things are usable and all
account creation, and all of the same interactions that a sighted user would
experience, have been built directly into Pandora's third party gateway, H O
P E.

The H O P E program can be found at:

http://q-continuum.net/hope/

I want everyone who is interested to visit Chris's site, and ask him
questions and of course purchase the program to further the development of
HOPE.

Believe me, from a fellow who has used Pandora since 2006, his program was
well worth waiting for.

Check it out, and hope you enjoy the accessible experience that HOPE brings
to Pandora.com

If anyone wants to contact the Pandora support staff, in case they have
questions or want to purchase for 36 bucks per year, a unlimited listening
experience, please e-mail:

The subscription process is only technically open to U.S. subscribers,
unless, you happen to have a proxy gateway to make it look like you are in
fact in the U.S. That is another discussion for another time...

Re: To all of you Total Recorder aficionados out there, a puzzle for you

2011-01-08 Thread Larry Higgins
Well James, I tried that approach, but no go. I am willing to assume
the role of a total beginner here and have you direct me. For one
thing, what should be my driver configuration. At present, I'm using
the "User-mode virtual device driver (Playback/Record through
TotalRecorder)" selection. Do I need to default to using TR as my
default playback device? I think I have successfully done this, but I
still can't get any sound recorded or played back with the soundboard
muted. I really couldn't swear as to just what my settings were
before I started having this problem once again. I do know that I
didn't have to mute my soundcard to have it go silent when recording
linein before now. Man, this is sure frustrating.

At 11:52 AM 1/8/2011, you wrote:
You don't have to accomplish this through Total Recorder. Just open
Windows Volume Control, and assuming you're running Windows XP,
check the box to mute the Line In. By default Volume Control shows
playback controls, so muting the Line In will only stop it being
played back. In other words, it won't affect your recording at all,
and you can get on with using your computer as you normally would.

Previously, Larry Higgins said:
Well, I guess I should really say that puzzle is mine. Hopefully
somebody can help me restore harmony between me and TR.

Just a little bit of background. I had a nearly fatal accident with
my computer at the end of March of the previous year. No need to
go in to all that, except to say that it became necessary to
rebuild my computer from the ground up, software wise. Yesterday,
after all that time, I needed to schedule and record a radio
program from my stereo receiver, using the linein to my soundcard.
That part went fine, but the problem is what follows.

The problem is simply this. I can no longer get TR to mute the
sound coming into the linein when recording. This used to allow me
to record from my receiver, allowing me to do any other work
without interference from what I am recording from the external
source. I have scoured every dialog box for any remedy, and just
can't find one. I remember there being a monitoring option that one
could check or uncheck in a previous version, and when unchecking
that box, that, at least as far as I can remember, allowed me to
record linein in the background, but now I can't seem to find
anything remotely relating to monitoring, unless it is preview
monitoring, and that doesn't seem to help.

Please, please, don't get this issue confused with hearing speech
through my soundcard going to my linein recording. I have that
covered, no problemo.

If I can further clarify the issue, please let me know. I guess I
can always find something to do other than use my computer during
these times, but would like to once again have the option of
computing in silence.

Thanks much,

Larry

Re: lost my windows sounds

2011-01-08 Thread Bud Schwab

Hi Christopher

I've done all that and still no sounds. It's got me baffled
also. If I ever find out the cause and get it fixed I'll let you
guys know what it was.

Thanks so much for your input.

When you go into Start -> Control Panel -> Sounds, check to make
sure that your sound scheme hasn't changed. Ditto for the default
Windows audio output device.

Hi gang,

I don't think I asked this question on this list because I'm a pretty new
kid on the block, so if I did ask it before please forgive me. A
few months

ago all of a sudden I lost my windows sounds such as the starting and
shutting down of windows, and the sound that indicates hardware
disconnecting or connecting. I've checked all the volumes and
made sure that

nothing is muted. If I check the list of sounds

Re: To all of you Total Recorder aficionados out there, a puzzle for you

2011-01-08 Thread James Scholes
You don't have to accomplish this through Total Recorder. Just open
Windows Volume Control, and assuming you're running Windows XP, check
the box to mute the Line In. By default Volume Control shows playback
controls, so muting the Line In will only stop it being played back. In
other words, it won't affect your recording at all, and you can get on
with using your computer as you normally would.

Just a little bit of background. I had a nearly fatal accident with my
computer at the end of March of the previous year. No need to go in
to all that, except to say that it became necessary to rebuild my
computer from the ground up, software wise. Yesterday, after all that
time, I needed to schedule and record a radio program from my stereo
receiver, using the linein to my soundcard. That part went fine, but
the problem is what follows.

The problem is simply this. I can no longer get TR to mute the sound
coming into the linein when recording. This used to allow me to record
from my receiver, allowing me to do any other work without
interference from what I am recording from the external source. I have
scoured every dialog box for any remedy, and just can't find one. I
remember there being a monitoring option that one could check or
uncheck in a previous version, and when unchecking that box, that, at
least as far as I can remember, allowed me to record linein in the
background, but now I can't seem to find anything remotely relating to
monitoring, unless it is preview monitoring, and that doesn't seem to
help.

Please, please, don't get this issue confused with hearing speech
through my soundcard going to my linein recording. I have that
covered, no problemo.

If I can further clarify the issue, please let me know. I guess I can
always find something to do other than use my computer during these
times, but would like to once again have the option of computing in
silence.

Thanks much,

Larry

realise I can only play a track.
Anyone know a way around this please
The lap top has no internet connection so unless download a programme on

even know where the library is held on this programme to work from that.
Thanks

2011-01-08 Thread Colin Phelan
Thanks Christopher, I am using XP.
The memory I would njeed to upgrade is that I would store MP3's on which I
guess is HD.
>From what you said not worth that.
I am sure there is more than 20G HD on the machine.
What is an idiots way of finding out overal HD size please.
When you say an external drive would be slow do you mean when playing or
just when initially retrieving?
Thanks again
