You are wrong, I've closed and saved loads of files, then opened them and by
moving to the record button, have added to them often and resaved no
problems.

there is a setting, I cannot remember where, which is a checkbox and says
append to file, mine is checked.

You have not answered my initial question though.

Stereo mix (or what you hear) is in the volume settings of GW, it is
mutually exclusive.

I use WindowsXP home.

For a start, I would turn the settings window off, it's a nuisance coming up
whenever you start a recording.

You can know a recording is in progress by the elapsed time command, i.e
alt-shift-e.

In the newer laptops/notebooks/netbooks, there is one output jack and one 
input jack.  I can't figure out how to make the input jack be stereo.  Then 
is it a line in or a mic jack?

In most cases its the microphone. Which means you will have to tweek to get 
the volume you need. The jack is set for stereo. you have to be sure the 
cable you are using is stereo.
