New products from Hims?
Hi, I just read the Main Menu Newsletter for the next Main Menu show and they announce great new products from Hims, of which at a cursory glance I couldn't find anything on their site. Since I'm going to go to the SightCity tomorrow, Europes biggest exhibition for products for the blind and visually impaired, I was wondering, if anyone could enlighten me on what these great new products are so that I can ask about them. Thanks in advance Alexandra -Original Message- From: Pc-audio [mailto:pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org] On Behalf Of Dane Trethowan Sent: Thursday, May 21, 2015 1:19 PM To: PC Audio Discussion List Subject: FetchTV Hi! Firstly, those who may be interested in the FetchTV service will be pleased to know that the Smart Apps - can't specifically comment on the iPhone version smile - seem to be particularly accessible. Second, a little sighted assistance seems to be required to go through the initial setup procedure which is screen based but once that's out of the way then you should be good to go. The User guide - whilst containing many helpful tips - is going to need some translation as it contains many diagrams so I'll undertake that project myself unless anyone else has done it smile. The FetchTV box can record up to 3 Free-to-Air shows at any one time or you can watch one whilst recording two others etc. You're able to access subscription channels through the FetchTv service though this really wasn't a requirement for me, they're there if I want them. You can watch Netflixh through your FetchTV but as yet I don't know just how accessible this would be and in any case, I have other accessible ways of watching Netflix already so its not a major concern. And finally, you can use your FetchTV box as a media server thus you can share all that you've recorded with your Windows PC, Mac or other devices such as your Blu-Ray player etc. I should have the FetchTV unit some time next week and hope to be able to tell you more about it then but I guess I should answer the question, why did I bother buying a FetchTV box? I had word that the Windows Media Center App is to be discontinued from Windows 10, no doubt Microsoft have there reasons. Itunes way of sorting.
Hi! It makes me very frustrated to have albums split into more than one part. For example i have thriller here with Michael Jacson and that album is splitted so that all songs exept one is in the same folder. The only song thats not is the one he sings with paul mcartney. The girl is mine i think its called. I also have a greatest hits with marvin gaye. That album is split in to a bunch depending on who he sings together with. It makes me go mad and frustrated. What do i do? /A
Re: Video Recording From Your PC, What's Next?
VLC will capture from a camera yes, I've not tried VLC with a TV Tuner Card to record Live TV, I've tried to do this sort of thing with Total Recorder but it won't work with my particular TV Tuner card for whatever reason and the reason is probably right in front of me, that being that there's no standard for TV Tuner cards. Having said all that, I do have a device that works on a network so - in theory - if the computer or Smart Phone can connect to a network then - the theory goes - that it should be able to capture the video if the computer or smart phone has the right tools to do so. I know that this device works with Smart Phones - I used it when I had an iPhone - so must try that with Total Recorder. On 21/05/2015 8:00 PM, Anders Holmberg wrote: Hi! Don't Throw The Old Stereo Away Just Yet..
I've been playing with stereo and Hi-Fi equipment for 25 years, I remember my first Hi-Fi system I bought on a budget back in 1991 from Douglass Hi-Fi as it was back then, the system consisted of a CD Player, Tuner, Cassette Deck and Amplifier. All those components were utterly dreadful - they were cheap - though I think the memory of this first setup lingers for several reasons, the system was the beginning of the Hi-Fi hobby for me, I was shown that everyone's tastes were different, because I had a system mine was not the best nor the worst but there was a whole world to explore, other systems inspired me to strive for better quality audio and learn how to improve sound quality where I could but most of all the system I had could be customised and expanded to my specific tastes. If the system I had then was in my lounge room now it would still be useable, no I couldn't use any of the modern day digital equipment with the system but I could at least easily stream media from my computer, smart phone or tablet to the system and do it cheaply too, this is where the D-Link DCH-M225 comes in. The D-Link DCH-M225 is a small cube aboutthe the size of an AC plugpack which - like an AC plugpack - plugs directly into a power outlet. The unit looks totally unremarkable and almost too bland for a $50 investment, just a box with one single button, an output socket and a LED on it, you press the button on the unit to enter WPS mode to allow the D-Link DCH-M225 to connect to your WPS router, more on this in a few moments. The D-Link DCH-M225 is the bridge if you like between your stereo system and your computer etc, you can stream your audio to it using either AirPlay or DLNA, the D-Link DCH-M225 can also act as a Wi-Fi extender. The D-Link DCH-M225 needs to connect to a home network and can be connected to the Network in 2 different ways, using WPS or manually by joining the default Wi-Fi network of the D-Link DCH-M225 and configuring it to recognise your Home Network, WPS is the easiest way to connect, just press the WPS button on the D-Link DCH-M225, enable WPS on your router and wait for a couple of minutes whilst the D-Link DCH-M225 and your router initiate a connection, that's it! The D-Link DCH-M225 has a line-out 3.5MM minijack socket for connection to your stereo system but doesn't come with any connecting cables so you'll have to purchase what you need in that area for yourself. The user can log into the web Interface of the D-Link DCH-M225 for futher configuration, you'll need to change the default password of the system for example. The Interface is the standard HTML type but not too easy to get around so experience with your specific Screen Reader certainly does help here. Quality of audio out of this little box is not stunning but the unit only costs $50 after all and audio quality here will satisfy most people, you'll notice the quality factor more if you enjoy listening to music but if you just have your music on in the background - and have a cheap system anyway and are satisfied with what you have - then perhaps I'm being picky. I have my D-Link DCH-M225 connected to an old stereo system here in the Den for the specific purpose of receiving an audio stream from my Foxtel box and I'm more than happy what the results I hear. For those who have more expensive systems and want better audio quality then yes, you have other options from the likes of Apple, Arcam etc. -- ** Those who need help are those who are prepared to help themselves

The recordings you make can be accessed by our computer if you want to do things that way, you can play them with Windows Media Player, VLC or whatever. ** Those of a positive and enquiring frame of mind will leave the rest of the halfwits in this world behind.
Re: Video Recording From Your PC, What's Next?
Yep the good old days smile, I had one of those myself, the company that made those were taken over by Logitech and - for whatever reason - they were discontinued which - to be honest - probably isn't a bad thing, if that unit was selling now then it would lack a few features that your average viewer might require such as HDMI connectivity, think some of the boxes available in Asia had HDMI connectivity but it wasn't universally available. Hi! I was very sad to learn that Microsoft have decided not to continue the development of Windows Media Centre which came as a standard part of Windows 7 Home Premium and above and was available as an optional extra for Windows 8.x, it won’t be available for Windows 10. So what does one do for video recording on a Windows computer. There’s only one option I know of and that’s XBMC however the last time I tired this with Windows 7 I couldn’t access it in any way shape or form, there might be ways to set it up so it can be controlled or accessed from the XBMC Controller Smart Phone Apps and that’s something I’m investigating. So - assuming all is lost for Windows - what now? It looks as though its time to place some faith in the FetchTV Set Top Box. Re: New products from Hims?
There's a new model of the Blazee - Original Message (sp?) and a new braille display called the Beetle that will connect to several devices at the same time. There may be others of which I'm unaware. However, HIMS is somewhat out of favor with me for their habit of dropping support for legacy devices to the point of not supporting elements that helped form the basis for buying them in the first place. They claim economics and out dated hardware, but then they don't replace the old things in their product line. So if you buy something from them, be prepared for planned obsolessence.- From: Alexandra Grünauer al.gruena...@gmx.de To: 'PC Audio Discussion List' pc-audio@pc-audio.org Sent: Thursday, May 21, 2015 4:52 PM Subject: New products from Hims? Hi, I just read the Main Menu Newsletter for the next Main Menu show and they announce great new products from Hims, of which at a cursory glance I couldn't find anything on their site. Since I'm going to go to the SightCity tomorrow, Europes biggest exhibition for products for the blind and visually impaired, I was wondering, if anyone could enlighten me on what these great new products are so that I can ask about them. Posted the below article on FetchTV a couple of weeks ago to another list, thought people here may be interested in the read. snip Just ordered this through Internode so taking the time to read up on the FetchTV service, there's plenty to read. Its a pity as Windows Media Center is a perfectly accessible way to watch your favourite TV shows, look up items in the TV guide, Record your favourite shows and so on. snip -- ** Those who need help are those who are prepared to help themselves

Yes, that might be part of the reasoning. I never quite worked out what the problem was with Internet Explorer etc being part of Windows but that's another topic for another day smile. improving headphone sound with a portable amp?
Hi all, Several years ago, I purchased a pair of AKG Q701 headphones for use with a home stereo. These are, in my opinion, outstanding phones, especially considering the price is around $200 or a bit more on Amazon. They are wonderfully comfortable to wear for extended periods of time, more so than any other phones I've seen, bar none. Recent reviews indicate some dissatisfaction, since these are now apparently being made in China, rather than Austria, the home country of AKG. But that's not the point of this message. I have tried my Q701 with the headphone output of my iPhone and find the output of the phone isn't sufficient to drive the Qs well. So I looked into the possibility of a portable headphone amp, such as the fiio e12, which has pretty decent reviews on Amazon. It is not clear to me, however, how you get the signal from the lightning port on the phone to the little amp, as it doesn't seem to come with a cable. You can purchase a separate LOD from fiio, but it has the old style 30-pin connector. You could then purchase an official Apple lightning adapter at some ridiculously inflated price, of course, and then I suppose the set up would work, although I don't think this amp has a DAC, and I'm not sure if you'd need one of those anyway. So, the question. What are folks doing who have head phones which are not driven adequately by the crummy output stages found in portable devices like phones etc? Mary

RE: improving headphone sound with a portable amp?
I use a little headphone amplifier made by a company called Headroom. It takes 4 AAA batteries. What I like about it is that it has a high and low impedence switch so it caters for all kinds of headphones. You get a short cable with it which allows you to connect your mp3 device or whatever to the 3.5 mm input of the amplifier. It also has a usb socket so you can use it as a sound card also. I think it was called the Egghead or something like that. -Original Message- From: Pc-audio [mailto:pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org] On Behalf Of Mary Otten Sent: 21 May 2015 05:50 PM To: PC Audio Discussion List Subject: improving headphone sound with a portable amp?
