Admin: Announcing new list owner
Please welcome Jonathan Mosen back as owner of the pc-audio list. I have just handed the reins back to him. It's been a very interesting experience, but managing a list of this size is a lot of work, and I need a break. Jonathan graciously (albeit foolishly, perhaps) agreed to assume the responsibility for managing the list. Thank you, Jonathan, and good luck! Re: Admin: audio books
Gary, you wrote: >Audible.com sells audio books that you can play on your computer, and >therefore, I would say that audio books of this type would be an >appropriate >topic for this list. Gary, I'm aware of audible. I'm a member. But, the point is that the pc-audio list is not for buying or selling or discussing where to buy or sell things, even if those things are audio. Now, if the questions are about how to play audio books or what devices play audio books, and so on, then it's perfectly on topic. Please try to understand the distinction. There are many buy and sell lists already. I don't want the pc-audio list to become just another one. So, I ask that you don't try to sell things here or offer to buy things here, ok? Re: Audible and MP3
Only the supported devices listed on the audible website will play audible files. This does include some cell phones, such as the HP I-Pack, but I don't know if your phone is supported. You'd have to check the list on the audible site. It is illegal to circumvent the audible encription in any way. You can download as many copies of a program to as many devices as you have activated, but it's not legal to defeat the encryption in order to copy programs to non-activated devices. On the download screen, there is a link to "listen online" but I'm not sure if this would work with portable devices such as cell phones, and I suspect that the site might be busy enough to prevent this from working well, although I've never actually tried it. I always download the programs and copy them to my Book Port which is a supported device. There are 2 mailing lists devoted to discussions among audible users. I recommend these lists. To subscribe, send blank emails to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hope this helps. Jeff - Original Message - From: "G. I gather that the books can be read in Media Player and Real Player. Does this apply to Real Pla;yer on a phone (Nokia 9500) or has there to be some other software or codec available before Audible's format is recognised. Alternatives for listening on a mobile phone or other device using MP3 - are there any? Can the files be converted - is this legal if you're just using your own books which you've downloaded? Re: Cross-Fading
If you actually want crossfading then you'll need some software to do that. There is a free SQR crossfader plugin for winamp which isn't too bad. There is also an output stacker which supposedly allows you to stack output plugins, so you could stack the crossfader with the disk writer plugin and make a wave file which you could then burn to a CD. At least, in theory you should be able to do this. If you have not normalized your mp3 files you might also want to get a compressor/limiter plugin for winamp as well. Jeff, the Ultra guy http://www.UltraHost.US http://www.UltraRadio.US - Original Message - From: "Andrea Sherry" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Sunday, February 06, 2005 1:05 PM Well I can do that with an audio cd. However I thought that there might be a way of encouraging .mp3 tracks to cross-fade. I would have thought that the buffering of .mp3 files would have been transparent to the system ie. that this would have occurred in the background and not interfered with output. Re: changing mp3 to cda
Actually, you want to convert the files to .wav format. When you burn the audio CD, .wav files are put on the CD in CDDA format. In fact, some CD bburning software will burn an audio CD directly from the mp3 files, so you might look at your burning software to see if it's cable of this. If not, you can always convert mp3 files with winamp using the wave output plugin. That's a free plugin for winamp. Jeff Want your own radio station? Ask about our Shoutcast servers. Re: the Book Port
Yes, Debbie, I appreciate your comments. I do have a couple more questions about the BookPort. You mentioned "resuming" in mp3 files. Are you saying that the BookPort will remember where you stop listening to an mp3 file and start at that spot when you resume listening? Also, the BC mentioned having an update feature for updating the software. Nothing was specifically said about this for the BP, although I realize it can be done. Is it more difficult to update software/firmware on the BP than on the BC? Actually, I'm not a subscriber of audible.com yet, but I have been contemplating it for quite some time. One of my reasons for doing so would be to have books I could listen to with one of these types of players. However, I have read about the various formats and would probably want to use format 4 anyway. I am somewhat particular about quality and usually prefer to get the highest quality I can, so this would not be an issue for me. If you have any other comments about either of these devices or other similar products I'd be interested. I really, really wish there was a unit like this with Eloquence. Re: the Book Port
Thanks, Milton, for the information in your message quoted below. If only there was a similar product which used Eloquence text to speech rather than Doubletalk I'd snap it up in a heartbeat. I read the article comparing the BookPort and BookCourier, but I felt it did an inadequate job of comparison. It really just listed the features of each product without much comparison. Nowhere did I find much information about the mp3 capabilities of these products. What bit rates do they support? More importantly, what bit rates do they *not* support? Can bookmarks be placed within mp3 files? I think my primary use for the unit would be to listen to audio and perhaps audible.com books, so I'd be most interested in the detailed differences between the two units in this regard. Are there other products which I should consider for listening to audio/audible.com books? Also, nowhere was anything mentioned about AC adaptors. Can either of these units be run off of AC? If not, it seems one would go through a lot of batteries. I did notice that in addition to the BookCourier being $20 less expensive, it also includes twice the memory. Jeff, the Ultra guy http://www.UltraHost.US http://www.UltraRadio.US - Original Message - From: "Milton M. Ota" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Saturday, July 10, 2004 5:59 PM Allow me to answer two postings in one-- I believe that the firmware in the BookPort over the Book Courier will support Daisy format 3.0 where the Book Courier currently was only supporting Daisy format 2.2. Whether that makes any difference at this time is not that important as there are not many books available in Daisy 3.0. The BookPort is a product of the American Printing House for the Blind, Inc. information about the BookPort can be found at their website at: http://www.aph.org/ You can find a website on the Book courier at: http://www.bookcourier.com/ And for all interested parties, go to the web of the American Foundation for the Blind's Accessworld for July 2004 and read a comparison report of the two devices we are talking about here. http://www.afb.org/accessworld/ Aloha, Milton M. First of all, this is off topic for this list. Please do not post any responses to the list. Fred, you are quite welcome to create a forum if you want. Personally, I despise forums and cringe every time I must use one to receive support. This list will not be replaced by a forum. It is here to stay. Now, Fred, please try to keep your messages on topic. Thank you, Jeff List Owner - Original Message - From: "Kathy Szinnyey/Fred Otto" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Tuesday, June 15, 2004 8:10 PM Hello PC Audio pals, I'm wondering if anyone has considered making this list into an online forum rather than an e-mail list? I am a regular participant in a forum on Worldcrossing.com and it is really easy to use and access overall. The difference is this, for those who aren't familiar with forums: You get on the Internet and go to the Worldcrossing (or whatever) site. You log in with your name and password. Then you see a list of ongoing discussion "threads." When you visit a thread, you can read all the posts or just the new ones since the last time you were there. You can add your comments or questions and they'll be appended to those already there. It's easy to start a new thread on a new topic, too. Rather than having many e-mails a week on the same topics, such as Nero, Archos, mp3, Goldwave, and so on, you find info on these all neatly grouped together. Advantages of e-mail lists are: You don't have to "go there," because the messages just show up in your inbox. Advantages of online forums: Your e-mail doesn't fill up with dozens of messages on different topics; serves as a reference body because it collects information grouped by topics rather than as widely scattered bits and pieces; has a more "community" feel. I also think people might get even better answers to their questions there, because 1) they can sift through the threads to find previous answers to similar questions and 2) the more knowledgeable folks in the group might be more inclined to answer a question in depth there than on e-mail, where the question may come up again and again. Just a thought. Thanks to all the folks here who offer their help to those of us who need it! Fw: An Accessible version of the Oddcast plugin
Hi All, As some of you may know, Oddcast, is a Winamp 2/3/5 DSP plug-in which allows one to stream mp3 vorbis and Windows Media audio. In a couple of respects it is comparable to the shoutcast DSP with which many of you will be familiar. However, the addition of support for WMA and Vorbis streaming set it apart from Shoutcast. Further more, unlike the SAM encoders from Spatial Audio Oddcast is completely free to use as much as you want on as many machines as you want. The adoption of Oddcast has been rather slow amongst the streaming blind community owing to it's interface which is largely graphical and had very little keyboard support. However, the plug-in was still usable and has produced some marvellous results for those of us who have persevered. The following was recently posted to a mailing list by the author of Oddcast. I would urge anyone interested in streaming audio to take up the author's invitation and provide feedback regarding the following. Moreover, Remember, he's a programmer doing this in his spare time, with almost no clue about all the screen readers out there. So messages in the form of (It doesn't work for me, I'm using JFW 4.5) won't be very helpful. The other thing to keep in mind is that this guy has gone out of his way for us and I feel it is a good idea that when someone does something like this for the community that we at least attempt to show our appreciation by providing some useful and constructive feedback. Please forward where appropriate. ---Oddsock writes: I released a blind-friendly version of oddcast a long time ago, but haven't really had any feedback (actually zero feedback) from anyone whose actually tried to use it...I recoded the main UI to use common windows controls in the hope that it would then become more blind-accessible... your feedback is most welcome.. http://www.oddsock.org/tools/oddcastv2_wa2_bf/ Geoff Shang has agreed to collect and collate the feedback. Re: Speech-friendly music download sites
Ray, My objection was not to the original inquiry about sites to purchase and download music. My objection is to requests for specific music. A list member asked what specific song was being sought and that is off topic for the pc-audio list. Jeff - Original Message - From: "Ray Slaton" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Sunday, May 16, 2004 7:11 PM I am a little confused. isn't the purpose of pc audio to discuss computer related audio as it relates to computers. Fw: New Device Allows Recording at Concerts
New Device Allows Recording at Concerts Updated: Thursday, Apr. 29, 2004 - 7:42 AM By LUKAS I. ALPERT Associated Press Writer NEW YORK (AP) - Oh, how far we've come from the 78, the 45, even the CD. Now, minutes after your favorite band sounds its last note on stage, you can load a live recording of the concert onto a cigarette-lighter-sized hard drive hanging off your keychain. Take it home, toss the digital files onto your computer and then e-mail it to all your friends with the message, "Dude! These guys are awesome!" On May 21, new digital kiosks offering the tiny drives will be installed at Maxwell's, a small indie-rock club in Hoboken, N.J. At $10 a pop for the recording, and $20 for the reusable, keychain drive, let the downloading begin. "This is a tool that allows fans to take home and share some of the best independent music from small live venues around the country," said Daniel Stein, CEO of Dimensional Associates, a private equity firm that owns eMusic Live, which created the machines, as well as eMusic, a music file-sharing Web site, and The Orchard, a marketing firm for independent labels. For Scott Ambrose Reilly, president of eMusic Live, the idea is to let fans have a legal copy of a live show, which gives smaller artists and their labels creative control over the quality of the recording and a commercial stake in its distribution. The understanding is also that it is not a one-time recording. Fans can share the files with their friends, providing free word-of-mouth publicity for smaller bands. For eMusic Live, the devices are just the next step for a service that it and other competitors already provide: burning CDs of live performances right after a show ends. "What we were seeing is that a large number of people were taking their CDs home and ripping them to MP3s, so we thought it would benefit music fans to eliminate that middle step," Reilly said. The technology is quite simple: The music fan goes up to the touch-screen kiosk after the show and buys the keychain drive with a credit card from a dispenser alongside the screen. Once that's done, the miniature drive is inserted into a slot in the kiosk, and the recording _ stored as MP3 files _ is loaded onto the device's 128-megabyte hard drive. That is enough space for 110 minutes of music. A receipt for the transaction is sent to the concertgoer's e-mail address. "I can remember when I started the debate was whether the 45 or 33 would be more successful," said Richard Gottehrer, author of hits like "My Boyfriend's Back," and "I Want Candy," and chairman of The Orchard. "Now the Napsters of the world are yesterday's news and this is the newer, legal, next step." Whether the technology will take off remains to be seen. But its creators are optimistic and hope to roll the machines into venues around the country soon. "Admittedly this won't be for everyone," Reilly said. "But since the direction of music is increasingly going digital, I don't see why this wouldn't find its niche." At a demo for the device at a sound studio in Manhattan on Tuesday, a New York-based band, Elysian Fields, performed three songs, which were quickly loaded onto the "pen drives" afterward. Later, at home, the device was inserted into the USB port of a laptop computer and voila! singer Jennifer Charles' smoky, lilting lyrics and Oren Bloedow's reverbed-out, brooding guitar lines filled the living room. Charles called the new technology "a beautiful thing." "I'm very excited to be a part of this incredible and sexy technology," she said between songs. "It makes us feel very James Bond. You can have your little pens _ wow, beam me up Scotty." ___ On the net: eMusic Live: http://www.emusiclive.com eMusic: http://www.emusic.com The Orchard: http://www.theorchard.com Elysian Fields: http://www.elysianmusic.com Maxwell's: http://www.maxwellsnj.com ___ PC-Audio List Help, Guidelines, Archives and more... http://www.pc-audio.org To unsubscribe from this list, send a blank email to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: copying stream url's
Tim, I know the difference between a .ram file and a .rm file. But, that wasn't the question. Maureen was trying to paste a path and filename into a player as a URL. My point was (and still is) that a path on a local drive is not a URL. A URL begins with a protocol such as http or ftp. A file path begins with a drive letter. Some programs such as Internet Explorer can detect the difference automatically and deal with either one appropriately. Other programs such as winamp make a distinction between the two. In winamp, press the letter l to specify a file, press CTRL-L to specify a URL. Re: copying stream url's
Hi Maureen, That's not really a URL, it's a file. The easiest way to play that file is probably to navigate to that folder using MyComputer or Windows Explorer and simply hit enter on the .ram file name.
