RE: SIGMATEL PROBLEMS ON DELL LAPTOP

2008-07-15 Thread Richard Godfrey-McKay
Hi Judy,

Thanks for the interesting reply. Do you know, by any chance, if using a
USB soundcard would fix it? If so, any thoughts on something basic?

 Thanks.

I sold my Dell with sigmatel because all recordings were muffled and it
wasn't working with Skype or other programs. The Dell support teams admitted
that sigmatel had a problem. The output is good, but input is very
problematic. The web cam microphones sounded better than any of the external
mics we tried, but they kept dropping out..

It was a shame I had to sell it, the xps was a light and fast machine...

If you google the problem, you will see it mentioned as a known problem.

HTH,
Judy

HI, I've been having problems recording using audacity and Sigmatel on my
Dell XPS M1210 dell laptop. Audacity records the source, but there's what I
gather is called a "noise gate". The effect is that certain quiet sounds
are missed.

Help please.

WINAMP - ALWAYS ON TOP

2008-07-10 Thread Richard Godfrey-McKay
Hi, Question here for my Father-in-Law.

He's playing albums in Winamp by selecting a folder, opening the context
menu and then selecting play in Winamp.

Works fine when I'm there doing it, but invariably shortly after I've left
although the tracks play, Winamp seems to be minimised. Is there a relevant
setting to ensure that Winamp is always in focus? Don't quite know what
"always on top" does, but wondered if this was relevant?

TURNING OFF SIGMATEL FILTERS - MORE ON BIRDSONG

2008-06-24 Thread Richard Godfrey-McKay
Hi, I think I need to try to play around with the Sigmatel filters, and to
turn some of them off. Have looked at the properties of the Sigmatel stuff
in device manager, but don't know what to do to try to turn off the filter
which I think may be blocking mid-range frequencies which I am trying to
record. Advice please.
thanks.

RE: HELP WITH SETTINGS TO TRANSFER CASSETTES OF BIRDSONG TO PC

2008-06-23 Thread Richard Godfrey-McKay
Hi, I'm using a good quality stereo deck and have tried both the line out
and the headphone jack, with similar results. I did try the earphone socket
on an old ghetto blaster which seemed to be better, although the motor was
too noisy. Any thoughts welcomed, as these tapes are well worth preserving.
Thanks.

Too bad they are on cassette, bird songs are a lot of high frequencies, so
good open reel or even vinyl is better than cassettes.
Anyway this doesn't solve your problem. How are you interfacing your
cassette machine to your computer?
Is your cassette machine portable, stereo dual, etc.

HELP WITH SETTINGS TO TRANSFER CASSETTES OF BIRDSONG TO PC

2008-06-22 Thread Richard Godfrey-McKay
HI, as the subject says, I want to transfer cassettes of professionally
recorded birdsong to my PC. I'm using XP home with Audacity.

Problem is that the recording blots out all the ambient noise - such as the
woodland sound.

Not quite sure what to try to change. It's almost as though there's a
filter blocking out that mid frequency range. Help welcome.
