Subject: Hp and Creative DO NOT support two sound cards

I recently was told by Hp support that they do not support two sound
cards.
I don't have official email about this but was told by a support
 supervisor
that they can not help me if I want to use a second audio card at the same
 time.

Today, Creative support emailed me and also told me Creative does not
 support two sound cards.

Neither company has given me a reason why they do not support two sound
cards or how one device can cause the other not to work properly.

It seems Creative can not help me with any problems I might have running
 the
other card even if it is caused by updating their drivers.

Creative support told me to update the drivers to fix another problem.
 Now
I've lost the ability to use the first sound card (Realtek AC'97) for
 speech
 and system sounds again.

Needless to say, I will be ditching the Audigy 4 Pro even though it has so
many great features and does sound good. I will probably buy a USB sound
device to use for speech or even get a serial port adaptor so I can run my
LiteTalk on this computer. I know many people have run down Creative
 sound
cards on this list before but they never really gave good reasons so I
didn't pay much attention. Now I wish I had.

I will never buy another HP product. I advise any blind people not to buy
HP computers if they wish to run more than one sound card.

Ah, yes. Forgot about that. Its been a long time since I've ripped music
with WMP. I stil don't like the fact that when I convert to .mp3, I can
 only
fit about 40 songs onto an mp3 cd, as a posed to 150 if I download the
 songs.

 Hi Tyler.

You can use your JAWS cursor to check the status of the rip. Just below
 the
menu bar there's a toolbar that says 'stop rip' when ripping is in
 progress
and this changes to 'rip music' when the rip is completed. The automatic
ejection of the CD is more convenient though, of course.

Ripping cds with windows meedia player is easy:

 1. open windows meedia player.2. Asuming you have version 10, tab until
 you
hear rip cd or something; even if you don't have 10, however,
 something
 similar will be there.
 3. Press space, and tab until you see a list box with checkboxes. You
 can
check which songs you would like ripped; all are checked as default, I
 think.
 Click rip music.

If you'd like to change where your music gets ripped to, the format of
 the
music and the quolity of the music which you rip, press alt-t and go to
options. Press control tab until you hear rip music; theres an option
 where
you can set the cd to eject when its finished, I'd check this since its
 hard
to tell when the cd is done if you can't see the progress bar and wmp
doesn't really have a finish diologue or anything. There is also a rip
 cd
 at
when inserted; this is all personal preference.

 hope that helped

contains links to websites for music played during the show.
 Unfortunately,
WinAmp doesn't display this content when I go into the ID3 Info window. Is
there a way I can extract this information without having to install
 iTunes?
Thanks.

Hi, Jim. I have the latest version of Replay a/v. and though I have
had some frustrations with it, I routinely record a couple longish
weekly programs with perfect results. Most of what I record comes
from different public radio stations. I could test your program if
you want, though I may not be able to do so this Sunday.

Sirius antennas need to see most of the sky, meaning antennas outside
 the
house. XM satellites are geo-stationary, while Sirius satellites
 move
 across the sky.

 Hi TJ
From what I hear, XM plans to start 4 more channels which will
 be
commercial-free music ones to off-set the ones that do. That way
we'll still have the same number of commercial-free ones as we
 did
 before.
I don't know when these channels will launch or the formats
 they'll
have, but that's the information that's out there floating
 around on
 the
 net.

This really isn't that big of a deal you know. If there are
 going
 to
be spots, and it looks like there are, it'll probably only be
 2 or
 3
minutes an hour tops, and that's definitely better than the
 amount
you get on commercial radio. These channels are expendable
 really,
because they're run by clear channel. if the commercials
 bother
 you
that much, simply find other xm channels to listen to that
 don't
 run commercials.

 HI,

I concur with Jonathan's recommendation of Skylook . Skylook is fantastic
and the recordings are very clear and are in MP3 format so you should be
able to play them without having to install a specialised media player.
 As
Jonathan mentioned, you don't need a second sound card or anything.
 Skylook
records straight from the Skype audio stream. The Skylook plugin also
 comes
with a Skype answering machine built-in. I used the Skylook plugin the
other day to record a conference call. Skylook is sure handy to record
meetings as well as interviews etc.

Hi Joe, the most reliable way to do this at present is by using the
 Skylook
plug-in for MS Outlook from http://www.skylook.biz. You may also try a
programme called Powergramo, but a couple of us have lost important
recordings with this app. It does have the advantage of being able to
 record
directly in wave though. No second sound card needed in either case, and
 no
special software driver that could screw things up.

I am told that the option to turn on the digital output only is in

Does it work well with JFW and window-Eyes? are any scripts or set files

While Total Recorder can be used to record Skype calls here is some
information about another program that can do this. This message was
posted to this list early last month. -Steve.

 From: Chris Skarstad [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: Important for those interested in registering Power Gramo!
  hi folks
I finally did it! Registering PowerGramo, the program to record skype
 calls
 took me quite a while.
To say this was an arduous task is an understatement. The program itself
works very well after it's registered, but registering it is quite a
chore. The thing is that this company prefers to send you your
registration code via skype chat. I don't know about window-eyes users,
 but
with JAWS 7, the only way to read skype chat messages is to use your JAWS
 cursor.
   Oh by, what fun.
Ok, so the dude finally comes online and he sends me a message and he's
 all
like, paste in the code for your product and i'll send you back another
code you can paste in. So I do that and he sends me back one of the
longest registration codes I've ever seen, probably more than 50
 characters
 long.
Ok, so now the question is, how to get this thing from the skype chat
window to the proper dialogue box? What I ended up doing was just writing
it down in note pad and then i copied and pasted it into the dialogue box
 for Power Gramo.
It took me a couple tries, but I finally did it!
So, if you're going to register the program, you might like to get sighted
help to make it easier, or barring that, you could do what i did and write
the numbers and digits into note pad and save it.
As for the program itself, it's awesome. The free version will only
 record
one side of a skype conversation, while the pro version will record both
sides and even split it into separate audio tracks. You will be on the
left side, and your skype buddy will be on the right.
The sound quality can be adjusted in the tools menu, under options. The
slider has 3 settings, 0 percent which is low quality, 50% which is medium
and 100% which is high quality, bet you couldn't guess!!
Window-eyes may read this slider bar differently, but that's how JAWS 7
 reads it.
The program records calls and saves them in its own proprietary file
format, but you can easily export your calls in the file menu, export
 record.
You can choose either Ogg Vorbis, or .wav. Mp3 will be coming in the next
 pro release they say.
To do this, just focus on the call you want to export and then go to the
file menu and do it like I said above. You might even like to create a
folder on your hard drive called calls or something to make it easier.
Remember, the calls aren't automatically saved in .ogg or .wav, you have
 to
export them yourself. So the program itself is extremely accessible, they
just need to work on the registration process!
It's a pain to have to deal with, and I plan on writing to them and
suggesting an alternative method for registration. I suppose I should
 give
the website out for this, i imagine people will wonder what it is? it's
called Power Gramo, and it can be gotten from
 http://www.powergramo.com
The standard version is free and the pro is $19.95.

Also, I'm sure you realize, the quality of your player and sound card will

A relatively new compressed audio format, like mp3, but with better sound
quality and a smaller file size. I gather it was first developed for the
IPod. But it isn't limited to that platform. My brother has over 5gigs of
music in the m4a format, which he ripped from CD to his Ipod, and synched
with his hard drive. He uploaded the whole 5gigs to me, one weekend, and
they all play fine from my hard drive, using Winamp. And, the sound quality
really is quite good.

Well, then, I'd still recommend easy CD-DA Extractor. At $29.95, it's less
expensive than Goldwave. There may be less expensive programs that will do
the conversion, and nothing else. But these two are the programs I know.

How many m4a files do you need to convert? If there are not too many, and
they're not too large, you could email or SendThisFile them to me, and I'd
be happy to do the conversion for you, saving you the need to buy the
necessary software.

I'm not worried about sound quality. It's not high fidelity stuff I am
listening to begin with. I don't want to make regular audio CDs, the 74 or
80 minute types that can be played in all CD players. I want to be able to
load all these files,or most of them, onto a CD to listen to later, but my
MP3 CD player won't play M4a files.

Easy CD-DA Extractor will do it. But why would you want to do it? M4A sounds
so much better than MP3. If you are trying to burn your m4a file to a CD,
Easy CD-DA Extractor will also do that, without your having to convert the
format (and lose sound quality), first.

Hi, To answer your question the CD program doesn't work. The CD is
  blank.
I tried reinstalling it back in the computer last night and I still
  was
  not
  able to use the program.

The other question that I have is is there any way to get rid of the
graphics when you put Nero in whether it be 5.5 or 6.6? Now when I
  try
  to
burn a CD it wants me to save the image to my computer. Before when I
  was
using Nero 5.5 with my other computer which had Window's 98 on it
  there
  was
no graphics and it didn't say or ask you to save the image so you
  could
  burn
the CD. Now if I hit cancel when it asks me to save the image it
  still
  won't burn the CD.

When I tried using the Premiere CD Creator I saw some graphics on
  there
  as
well. I don't know if this feature can be removed or not. Any
  information
that you all may have about this would be appreciated. I don't want

  buy
Nero 6.6 if I'm going to encounter the same problem.Thanks.

 Hi folks

I've got virtual audio cables here. This software is supposed to allow
you to add another virtual sound card input, which means that if things
work right for me, I'll be able to record Skype conversations, something
I've wanted to do for a while. Ok, so going into the program group i see
things such as audio repeater, and control pannel, which I am guessing
 let's you set it up.
The only thing is I'm not sure what to do from here. in the control
 pannel
dialogue, i see a list box, and the only item in it says, 1 async 10.
tabbing again, i see cables edit spin box, and it's set to 1.
next is a help button, the help doesn't seem to work for some reason, i
always get taken to a page that says the page cannot be displayed hmmm.
and then we have a set button.
tabbing one more time I see something that says, ms per int, which is an
edit spin box, , and it's set at 10

Next there's a mode combo box, and the default is async, 1 of 2. the
 other choice is sync.
pressing the tab key again, i see a set button, then an about button and
 an exit button.
To let you guys know, I only have 1 sound card in this machine, it's a SB
audigy 2, it's labeled as SB Audigy audio ff80.
So if anybody can help me sort this out it'd be nice. I'm not sure if
 this
software will even do what i need, given that I only have 1 sound card
input, but i figured I'd try it! now if i could just figure it out i'll
 be
on my way. thanks to anybody who can help.

What I am getting in my file is my speech output from JAWS.

 Any suggestions?

 Buddy,

Get over it. The fact is Jaws scripting has enhanced Winamp to the point
where it is more than a half decent audio player. The problem is you're
 too
dumb to recognise this fact. So be that is it may and let others who
benefit from Jaws scripting be free of your lack of intelligence.

 HI,

These time markers are primarily for Winamp use. However, the resulting
.tms file is a text file and if one was to find out the format of cue
 sheets
and was able to somehow convert the time marker format to cue sheet format
then it would be possible to use the time markers for burning the file on
 to
a cd. But the short answer to your query is that exported time markers
 are
 just for winamp use.

 Hi There,

The folllowing is from our Winamp scripts manual and describes the time
 marker features.

The Winamp scripts include a feature that allows you to set, jump to and
remove multiple audio bookmarks on your currently playing track from any
 of
 the
Winamp Windows. You can also find out the elapsed, remaining and time
 length
of the currently playing track. You can even export your time markers to
 Time
Marker Set files (.tms files)and import time markers from .tms files
 into
your Winamp time marker file file (winamp.tmf). Note: Winamp already has
 a
 bookmark
feature which allows you to store favourite streams so you can go back to
them later. To save confusion, the audio bookmarks are called time
 Markers.

The idea of time markers is to allow you to set a time marker in a
 currently
playing track and then be able to come back later and have the track play
 from
the point where the time marker was set. This way you can close Winamp,
 play
another track or even if you get caught up on the phone etc., you will
 know
that you won't have to start the track from the beginning again. You can
also set more than one time marker in a track.

The keystrokes are as follows and they can genrally be used from anywhere
 in
 Winamp.
List of 7 items (contains 1 nested list)
. m: Set a Time Marker. Sets a time marker on the currently playing
 track.
There must be a track playing for it to work, but it will warn you that
 no
 track
is playing if you try to invoke it when no track is playing. If a track
 is
playing and you activate the set time marker command, you will be
 presented
with a dialogue box and focused on an edit field where you can label the
time marker to be set. Simply type the desired label and press enter. If
 you
 leave
this field blank and press Enter, the time marker will still be set but
without a label. After the time marker is set, Jaws announces the number
 assigned
to the time marker and the time stamp of the position in the currently
loaded track as well as announcing the optional label you gave it. For
 example,
if you gave the time marker the label chapter 3, and the positionin
 your
file was 2 minutes and 30 seconds, you would hear Jaws announce Time
 Marker3
set at 2 minutes and 30 seconds, Chapter 3. Due to technical
considerations, the ability to label time markers is not available when
 using JAWS versions
prior to Version 3.7. Note: You cannot use m to set time markers from
within dialogs such as the open file or jump to file dialogs. There, the
 m
 key
merely types the letter m. To set a time marker, it is necessary to be
 in
one of the Winamp windows such as the Playlist or Equaliser, etc.
. Alt+Shift+m: Jump to Time Marker. This script does not require a file
 to
be playing, but it must be able to determine which file you are wanting
 to
 play.
If the file name is listed in the Winamp title bar, the script will grab
 it
from there. Otherwise it will announce that there is no track ready to be
 played.
If you have just opened a file in Winamp for the first time, but haven't
played it, it's name won't appear in the Winamp title bar. To fix this,
 simply
play and stop the file. Stopping

 Hi
I slightly changed the subject line to better reflect the question.
Well if it were me doing it, what I would do is listen to your backing
track on headphones or something so people would only hear you sing. I
would then take your vocal track and then do a mix paste or whatever the
term goldwave uses, and put your vocal track on top of your music.
That way you get both. the trick is to get them syncronized together
exactly right. This is where a midi sequencer or other type of
thing like that would come in handy. But that's a
topic that's kind of going into a gray area so we won't go there.

 Hi.
There are quite a few packages that can do this. These include Total
Recorder and other programs of its kind which can convert the sound file
 as
it plays in a player. I notice that others have mentioned these packages,
 so
I won't. The problem with them is that they need you to play the file
through. Therefore, a 1 hour file takes 1 hour to convert. Further, they
 tie
up the sound card. To get it done faster and without using the sound card,
 try one of these packages.
 http://www.rmconverter.com
has a shareware package called RM to MP3 converter.
 http://www.dbpoweramp.com
has a free package which will allow the conversion of real audio to
wav and MP3, among other formats, for the first 30 days of use. If you
 want
to convert to wav after the first 30 days, it's still free. If you want to
convert to MP3 after the first 30 days, you have to pay $15, I believe. Of
course, once you have the files converted to wav, you can convert them to
MP3 quite easily with free packages like CDEX.

 Hi folks,

Is there a way, with one soundcard and a program like Total Recorder (or
some other), to record streaming content, but not hear the JFW software
 speech on the recordings?

I know the two obvious solutions are use a hardware synth, which I can't
 use
any longer, or add a second soundcard, and I am also having difficulties
 there, too.

 Thanks in advance.

 Hello List,

I am an amateur (meaning one who loves) audio producer who is so
frustrated, I may go back to analog! I wonder if any of you could tell
me if there is a simple sound-editing program which is supported by JAWS
out of the box, i.e. does not require additional scripts? I need to do
 the following tasks:

Record, edit, mix sound and burn Cds. I don't need a lot of effects.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Just took a look at the Nero Web site -- it looks like the ultra edition
tries to be everything, and it should for $80! How many of these things
are

usable with JAWS?

• Nero StartSmart 2 – command center for the Nero 6 Ultra Edition package
• Nero Express 6/Nero Burning ROM 6 - ultra-reliable burn performance
• Nero Recode 2 – recode DVDs quickly and effectively in Nero Digital!
• NeroVision Express 3 – create and edit videos and slide shows!
• Nero PhotoShow Express - create lasting memories for generations to
come!

• Nero ShowTime 2– integrated DVD player for real cinema-quality enjoyment
• Nero MediaHome - stream music, videos and pictures on UPnP-capable
devices!
• Nero Wave Editor 2 and Nero SoundTrax – mix your audio data
professionally!
• Nero BackItUp – secure data easily and reliably!
• Nero Cover Designer – design professional covers!
• Nero Media Player, Nero Toolkit, Nero ImageDrive, InCD 4 - other useful
tools

There are several apps in that list that would be good to have.

Nero 6 ultra adddition, and earlier versions also support copy and paste
operations from windows explorer. But remember, you aren't just limited
to

audio cd's. With a data cd you can get a hundred tracks or more on a
single

cd, which makes storing ever so much easier!

I have heaps of mp3 files that I want to burn to CDs, creating CDs
with
various themes. I am presently creating a folder for each CD, and
prepending track numbers to the file names to order them. The trouble I
run
into is calculating the total length of the collection to make sure
that I
am gathering one CD's worth of tracks into a folder. I'd love to have
a
Windows Explorer extenssion that would add a estimated length column
to
the Windows Explorer detail view and display a total length for
selected
files in the status bar.

In the few burning programs I have tried, I have found organizing files
for
burning to be clumsy. None support cut/pastes from Windows Explorer to
the
burn list, for instance. I always have to use the JAWS cursor to hunt
down
the space remaining on the CD as I am compiling a burn list, etc. I
wish I
could find better tools.

I imagine there are several other JAWS users out there who do quite a
bit
of this and have found more efficient methods. How do you other JAWS
users
do this? What tools and programs do you use?

from the internet. I'm using Goldwave to do so and I've been told that I
have

to set my audio device to 'What you hear'. My problem is, within the
configuration of my Toshiba, I don't have the option of, 'What you hear' I
have Mono Mix. Stereo Mix, CD Player, Line in and Phone line. Absolutely
nothing close to, 'what you hear'. My question is, given that I don't have
this option, is there another work around that will enable me to record
from

my sound card.

I'm using Windows XP home

Many thanks.
Peter

Re: CD/R compilation burned with Nero behaving like CD/RW

James,
I'd read good things about the screen reader accessibility of Easy Cd/DVD
Creator 6, and had learned that you can still get leftover copies from
places such as Staples, when someone gave me a copy of Nero Ultra Version
6
as a birthday gift. Now both of these poroducts have been superseded by
new
versions: The Nero V. 7 to which hank refers, and Roxio Easy Media
Creator,
about whose accesibility I don't know anything, but which is now in the
same

price range as Nero.

So I'm going to keep trying to get more comfortable with Nero and, if it
just keeps seeming too complicated for my comfort, I'll buy a copy of Easy
CD/DVD Extractor, a new version of which was just released. The last
version, which I tried out as a demo, seemed pretty easy to use, and it's
only $24.95.

What fun. I mean, burning CDs really *is* fun and neat to be able to
do,but
some of theprograms can make me feel as if I must be going crazy. And
that

is *not* much fun.

thanks for responding. I'll see what I can manage with what I've got.

Daniel, have you tried Roxio? I used Nero, and didn't really like it,
because, yes, it was really confusing, but Roxio works great!

Hope I gave you a new Idea...

Subject: CD/R compilation burned with Nero behaving like CD/RW

Last week, I bought my first supply of CD/Rs, a spindle of 30 so I could
start using Nero Ultra Version 6. I knew there would be something of a
learning curve, because it's been a little confusing to learn how to copy
and paste tracks from the window with the file browser into the
compilation
window, but I figured out some kind of trick about tabbing or shift
tabbing

at just the right juncture to find the empty compilation window and paste
the files into it. I still can't describe just how I did it. This is
really a fumbling around situation. What I wouldn't give for a truly
screen
reader friendly, well labeled more intuitively designed program. BTW,
I've

tried Premier, and that didn't really do it for me, and I don't want to go
into that again.

Anyway, after that opening digression, here's my real problem: The first
couple of CDs I burned as compilations from files on my hard drive and, in
at least one case, copied from a music CD directly, worked fine. By which
I
mean they played not only in my computer and my recent-vintage CD player
in

my stereo, but they also played on my several-years-old Panasonic
Discman-type portable player, which wouldn't have worked if I'd been using
CD/RWs by accident. But the friend who helped me buy these blank discs,
as

well as another friend, reassured me that they're CD/Rs.

Okay, so then I've burned another couple of CDs since those first ones,
once
a copy from another CD, and the other effort a compilation burned from
.mp3

files. But these last two are behaving as if I'd used CD/RWs instead of
CD/Rs. They'll play in my computer, and they'll play in my stereo system,
but on my portable player, they just play as static or a kind of white
noise.

I'm not aware of having changed any settings on any of the tabs in Nero
since the first couple of discs, but I still find this program confusing
enough so that maybe, just maybe, I mistakenly changed something and am
not

aware of what I've done.

for those who know Nero and are familiar with this stuff, is there
anything

at all that could have produced this result other than using CD/RWs that
won't play on lots of units like car stereos and portable players?
Informed

suggestions welcome.

Thanks in advance,
Daniel

Last october, from Best Buy, I bought a set of computer speakers made by
GE.

I don't know the model number, but they're called, GE Ultra-sonic 2.1. I
didn't need surround sound, with six speakers and subwoofer. This set has
the box containing the subwoofer with jacks in the back for two speakers,
power supply, and there's a headphone jack that works well. I find it
very

handy. The speakers are quite small but produce a very good sound with as
much volume as anyone should want. The speakers are sort of dome shaped.
Audio quality and frequency range are very good. They cost me around
forty
dollars after sales tax and what-not. There are three little knobs
centered

near the top of the subwoofer box for on/off, volume and treble/bass.
Hope this is helpful.
Lois Goodine.

Hi, well looking at that page it did not look like a very accessible
program for window eyes users. All I really need is a tool to restore
recordings frokm tapes or records and get rid of all of that hiss in them.
I don't need a tool to burn to cds as I allready use primear cd creator
from www.readingmadeeasy.com for my cd productions but just need a program
to remove left over noise and does a good job of it and not take out
artafacts of the audio. I would also like to know if there is a way to
normalize every sample in a file to a sertain level because I do a lot of
recordings on the phone and internet and sometimes the level of one
speaker is lower than the other and I want to be able to bring them to the
same with little manual selection and lots of work. bye

Hi Nick
I use Diamond Cut 6 (DC6) from tracertek. It works pretty well with Jaws
although it had a bit to go to become fully accessible. There are
hundreds of presets and the interface is pretty accessible through menus
and dialog boxes which can be tabbed around. There may be a demo.

The site is:

If you have a lively interest in audio matters their site is excellent
for excellent products.

I'm considering getting myself a copy of Nero for my rip and burn program.
But As I look at the Nero site, the current version seems to be called
Nero

Ultra. It doesn't seem as if that's the name of the version that everyone
mentions that they're using with Jaws or Window Eyes (I'm a Jaws user).
And

I'd want to make sure I was getting the one that is most Jaws friendly.

What's the version number and name of the right one? I went to the JFW
Lite

programs page expecting to find scripts for Nero there, and maybe learn
which version to get, but a Find for Nero turned up nothing on that page,
to
my surprise. People were just saying recently that there are scripts
there
for both Nero and for the Roxio Easy CD/DVD Creator prior to the most
recent

version (Roxio Easy Media Creator).

Advice will be appreciated. There seems to be more than one Nero out
there,

and I'd like to know which one to consider buying.

Billy! The best bit rate for you is the highest one that suits your
needs. We only have MP3s because disk space is valuable and we'd like to
fit as much material in as small a space as we can. It's a disk space
verses audio quality decision. The larger the bit rate the better the
audio
quality but the more disk space it takes. It's that simple. I'm
generally
happy with 128 KBPS but many people need to have 190 KBPS or even 320
KBPS.

A 3.5 minute song recorded at CD quality and uncompressed will playback at
1378 KBPS.
