Re: query on ipodder

2005-05-04 Thread Wil James
Actually, if you have links to *any* files in your blog, Ipodder will
get them. If you have a picture, Ipodder will fetch it. If you have a
phone post, such as Live Journal, Ipodder will fetch it.

hi. These are just regular, standard mp3 files, they're not streams
like
you have on the internet. That is the beauty of iPodder, you do need
to be
connected to the internet to download them of course, but you don't
need to
be connected to the internet to listen to them.
and since iPodder only downloads wwhat is put in an enclosure
element, you
are pretty safe. Typically, what people send are mp3 files.
It's always safe to have some kind of antivirus or antispyware
programs on
your system, but iPodder shouldn't figure very much into that.

Re: Understanding and comparing compression formats

2005-05-11 Thread Wil James
Remember, it is your choice whether to install a beta copy of software.
Beta means the product isn't fully live yet, that there are still issues
with the program. Beta testing is a way for the users to give feedback
to the developer of outstanding issues with the program.

I'm straying off topic for this list, so I'll be quiet now.

I'm curious. If the full version didn't work, and the company knew
it, why
didn't they just work on it until it was ready for prime time
instead of
leaving this Beta thing online for download? Is it possible that it
was
only with screen reader people that it failed, and is in use
otherwise, so
that only blind users are still using the beta, instead of the
finished
product?

Hi.

There was a full version of CDEX released after this beta but
unfortunately
version 1.51 didn't work on many peoples machines and so the beta
lived on.

Re: Ipodder won't install

2005-05-23 Thread Wil James
You did close out the program from the system tray first, didn't you?
If not, this is most likely your problem. A file can't be written to if
it is still in use, in this case, the executible for Ipodder is still
used by your system.

P.S. on below:

1. In case my wording confused anyone, I didn't simply delete the
icon of
the program on my Start menu. I used the Uninstall function in the
Ipodder
submenu.
2. After giving up trying to install newly downloaded Ipodder
2.0.03, I
tried to reinstall plain old version 2.0, which I had effortlessly
installed
the first time. But here, too, I was stopped by the same error
message as I
describe below, in exactly the same way. So it doesn't seem to
involve some
glitch or bug in the programs themselves or their installation
procedures
that's at fault. But if it's something on my computer that's
resisting or
sabotaging the installation, I have no idea what that might be. As
before,
knowledgeable advice will be appreciated.

Subject: Ipodder won't install

Having decided to spend some time this Sunday afternoon reading up
on how to
subscribe to and download podcasts, I launched the copy of Ipodder
2.0 that
I'd successfully installed a couple of weeks ago.

I was about to explore the interface and its menus and options with
Jaws,
when I got a notice that there was an update available that resolved
some
pI-Tunes related issue. Well, I don't use I tunes, but, thinking
this would
be a harmless and easy procedure, I clicked yes to allow myself to
be taken
online to a download site that I think was called EasyNews.

I found the link for downloading Ipodder for Win XP, eventually was
delivered the download after a few minutes' wait in queue, I
suppose.

Then I clicked on the executable file in its destination folder to
begin the
installation. I assumed it would overwrite and supersede my earlier
Ipodder
version with no difficulty,

Immediately upon beginning the actual installation process, I got a
dramatic
Windows error tone and the message that some file couldn't be
written.
Well, I didn't know what that implied or signified, so I tried out
the Retry
option, which didn't work, then the Ignore option, which also didn't
work,
and finally cancelled the installation.

I wondered, maybe it's in conflict with the existing copy of Ipodder
that's
already on my computer? So, just to be on the safe side, I went to
the
Ipodder icon on my programs menu and uninstalled the old copy. Then
I
attempted to run the installation of the new V. 2.0.3 again.

Same thing happened. It couldn't write one file, I clicked on
Ignore (why
would it be offered, this Ignore option, if it didn't help?) and
tried to
proceed, but then it couldn't write the *next* file. Well, I don't
know
what any of this means, but I figured I'd better just cancel and
come here
to ask if anyone know what's happening to me, and what I might do to
rectify
it, get Ipodder set up again, and begin to learn how to use it.

Thanks, all.

That's why I mentioned it being in the tray. You don't notice it unless

Hi Will. After opening the iPodder program, if I leave it and go
back into
it, it says something "a version of iPodder is in use. You have to
either
kill it or," whater else it says, so I go into the system tray to
use it.

2005-05-25 Thread Wil James
Hi Rob

You have what you meed for fading down and up the music. Sound Forge
has a feature called Mixing. You have some presets you can use with the
Max command. You use the keystroke ctrl+m to activate this dialog.
When using this command, it is important to have the voice clip you want
to use on your clipboard. If not, this feature will not work.

Under the process menu of Sound Forge, you have several choices. One
you will need is the Fade command from this menu. You can fade a track
in or out. When fading, select to the end of the file from the point
where you want the fade to take place. The standard Windows keystrokes
apply here. Use shift+end to select to the end of the file, then press
alt+p, f, o for fading out the music.

That should get you started.

Hi everyone,

Well, my goal is to create a podcast. Forget the rss, forget
uploading files, i need help with the most basic of basics.
What I want to do is start with music, podsafe music of course.
I want to fade it down, talk a little bit, fade it back up, or perhaps
fade it out entirely. What software do I need? Can someone give me a
senario so that I can accomplish this small yet important task?
By the bye I do have Window-eyes and Sound Forge 6.0. If Sound
Forge won't work I'm willing to go anywhere, download anything so that I
can get this project started.
Thanks for your help in advance. I know that a lot of you on
the list have recorded stuff for ACB Radio so this may seem like a real
dumb question, but I can't figure it out. Help.

Re: Blank CD/R recommendations, please

2005-06-15 Thread Wil James
When you are in the burn dialog, there is a check box to check for data
verfication. In older versions of Nero, the disc would eject, then the
door would close and check the disc for errors. In the latest versions,
you can tell if it is checking the disc by the intensity of the drive's
fan. That is a very handy feature. Yes, it does take more time to
complete, but you know if you have a coaster or not right away.

RE: accessible DVD software,

2005-09-12 Thread Wil James
I like VLC Media Player from http://www.videolan.org. It's free and uses
existing codecs from your system to play DVD's.

One neat feature is found under the audio menu. It is a channel option.
For example, if I put in the DVD "Ray", I have four channels. Channel 1 is
the movie with no DVS. Channel 2 is the movie in French. Channel 3 is the
commentary from actors and directors. Channel 4 is the movie with DVS.

VLC Media player will play most anything you throw at it with no problems.
The only drawback is you can't switch cards with the player. It uses the
default card you have for sounds.

Good Morning folks,

I'd like to know, which dvd playing software folks are having most success
with, accessing it with screen readers? doesn't matter which screen reader,
question is access to the dvd software.

You can write me off list if you'd rather not clutter it up here.

It should not make a difference how your DVD's play, even if you have an OEM
Power DVD. VLC doesn't care about that.

I might try that, maybe netflicks disks are set up odd, does it make a
difference I have an oem version of powerDVD that my Light-on burner came
with? Sometimes these OEM products aren't the same, even for accessibility
standpoint, as the regular retail version.

Take a look at the "to" field. I think you will see it was addressed to the
pc-audio list. If you don't want it, delete it. Trust me, it takes less
time to hit the delete key than writing a reply. I could take my own advice

Hello,

You've got a file called "Goalball - NZ-Challenge - Golden Girls V Young
Guns.mp3" (60065 KB) from David Truong [EMAIL PROTECTED] waiting
for download. David Truong says:

This is a stereo recording of the Women's challenge Goalball match - Goldeng
Girls V Young Guns which took place at the recent NZ Goalball nationals.
The match isn't quite complete but I don't think I have missed much and the
result of the game is well known by the end of the recording. I hope this
link will be ok.

You can click on the following link to retrieve your file. The link will
expire in 7 days and will be available for a limited number of downloads.

Regular link (for all web browsers):

When you use the program for Shoutcasting, does it stream the titles of

One thing you can try is the library for Winamp. Type in sports as your

Another site you can try is http://www.billsparks.org. Try the sports

The following is a message from the sponsor of the PC-Audio list,
MosenExplosion.com.

We're very pleased to advise that on October 29 starting at noon US Central
Time, Julia and I will be hosting a poker party on All in Play. If you've
never visited, All in Play is a very accessible online gaming site, with
games that are also attractive and fun for sighted people to play.

Our poker party will run for 24 hours, have six tables, and will be a great
way for us to meet our listeners and readers as well as having a lot of fun.
You'll be awarded 10 exploding chips for this special party.

If you've used All in Play before but your membership has expired, fear not,
as long as you have the software on your PC, you can play! If you've never
used the site before, you might like to head on over to All in Play At
http://www.allinplay.com and get a 14 day free trial so you've had a bit of
practice before the big day.

To give you a feel for what All in Play is like, we've done a quick audio
demo for you, which is available over on http://www.MosenExplosion.com.

Keep visiting MosenExplosion.com for more details as the day gets closer. It
should be a blast! The URL to participate in the party will be posted there.

I don't know why I'm wasting my time replying to this thread, but here goes.

No radio show announcements are on topic here, and I did not post one. I
paid, out of my own pocket, for some space on AllInPlay so that users of my
lists and web site could get together and have some fun. How people think
this translates into a radio show announcement, God only knows.

RE: changing formats?

2005-10-31 Thread Wil James
There are a few options for you. I'm sure somebody's already covered Easy
CDDA Extractor, so I won't go into that one. A free option you have is to
use Winamp. Just play the file like you normally would, but the change you
need to make is in the output plugins. Select Wave Out, configure it to
save your file in whatever format you want and where ever you want the file
saved, and play the file. This will work on web content and even protected
.wma files. If Winamp can play it, you can convert it.

One think you will need to take note of: Whatever processes you have in the
DSP Effects will transfer over to your conversion. If you want the file to
sound like it would without effects, select "none" in the DSP Effect
Plugins.

RE: about various topics on this list

2005-11-01 Thread Wil James
It all depends on what you look for that makes it a "piracy" program. As
far as the programs that you use to download audio that you talk about, does
it or does it not facilitate audio being put on your computer to be listened
to?

Hi,
It's a piracy program that can download everything also audio.
The same thing you can say about Internet Explorer. Should the browser also
be covered on this list?

RE: Beyond TV

2007-01-09 Thread Wil James
I use Beyond TV all the time. When you open it from the task tray, press f6
to start the TV. Press the numbers of the channel to go to and press enter
after entering them.

The hotkeys for the program are listed on the vendor's site
http:/www.snapstream.com.

Subject: Beyond TV

Hi There, Has anyone on this list used Beyond TV or any of the Beyond Media
products?
I had bought a media Center Edition computer and an Adaptec Duel Tuner card.
All this to let me control my TV and record programs via the computer
keyboard.

However, neither regular JAWS or Professional JAWS can work with Media
Center.

Freedom Scientific says that Microsoft will not let FS have access to this
program. This means that Microsoft's Media Center is intentionally
inaccessible!

Beyond TV, should let me independently record programs. Are any of you
already using Beyond TV?
If this doesn't work out, then I'll try the Swingbox I would really
appreciate any input on this.

Thanks in advance, Vicky

I don't know if you knew this or not, but your message was shouting
to me through my Braille display. Your caps was on!

The best place to look is on the Winamp site itself. Just do a
search for "Audiostocker" in the plugins area. The guy who made the
plugin hasn't updated it for some time now.

RE: quality of xm radio was Re: The Minx

2006-02-19 Thread Wil James
There is definitely a difference between the receivers that hook directly
into your stereo, as opposed to the ones that you tune your FM radio dial to
receive the XM radio. I would base it on a comparison of audio tapes to
CD's. That's how much difference there is between those two, at least to
me.

haven't as yet gotten an fm transmitter, and I haven't gotten my computer

Well now, it all depends on the equipment being used. If you're using a
crappy pare of speakers, then it'll show. I have a XM MyFi and really love
the quality on my home stereo unit, so everyone's ears are different.

This really isn't that big of a deal you know. If there are going to be
spots, and it looks like there are, it'll probably only be 2 or 3 minutes an
hour tops, and that's definitely better than the amount you get on
commercial radio. These channels are expendable really, because they're run
by clear channel. if the commercials bother you that much, simply find
other xm channels to listen to that don't run commercials.

Thanks for the responses. Certainly sounds a lot easier to tune with
accuracy than the Veronica. Hope the quality of the sound output is as
good.

2004-05-10 Thread Wil James
The buttons fine tune the fm band. I believe it takes ten kilohertz steps,
not 100 kHz steps. You can home in on a frequency you want. It works in
Europe also.

I have a question about the ccrane transmitter. I understand it has a
couple of buttons on the top for changing frequency.

Do these move the frequency up and down in increments, say 100 KHz? Or, do
they change the frequency in smaller steps?

Many receivers these days seem to scan the fm band in 100 KHz steps or
something similar, so wondering how the transmitter gets centered on a
channel.

One problem with the Veronica is that with the screwdriver adjustment, it's
harder to set the transmitter to an exact frequency and definitely so if the
receiver you
mostly use scans in only 100 KHz steps.

Thanks,

Don

Hello friends,
The trial version of this software is available from :
www.readingmadeeasy.com I successfully downloaded it about half an hour ago.
You would have to fill in a form giving your name, address, e-mail address
and telephone number. After submitting the form, you would be allowed to
download the trial version. I don't know much more about it at this stage
but it is there for downloading. Good luck. Kind regards.

RE: xm radio pcr?

2004-09-14 Thread Wil James
XM Radio took it off the market due to a program you could use with it to
record music. The RIAA pressured them to take it off the market for fear of
copyright infringment. If you want to hear more about this, go to

There are forums dedicated to this very topic.

Hi, Steve,

No clue about the PCR being discontinued
except hearing through this list, and
nothing mentioned on XM's website about
it. They are promoting Roady2 their
latest receiver. The PCR was obtainable
from PC Connections, a separate company.
I never had any problems with mine and
got it last December. I like that.
It's cool.

Subject: important, xm radio information

This is some information I thought all of you who have XM could use.

NEW YORK - XM Satellite Radio Holdings will soon begin broadcasting some of
its stations
to subscribers over the Internet, fresh on the heels of the company's
discontinuation
of a receiver for PCs that some users used to circumvent the music
industry's crackdown
on illegal file sharing.
Starting in early October, XM will charge $7.99 for a subscription to listen

to its
68 commercial-free music stations and about a half dozen other XM stations
on the
Internet, the company said Wednesday. Those who already subscribe to XM's
satellite
service, typically at $9.99 a month, can sign up for XM Radio Online for an
extra
$3.99 a month.
Software currently on the market allows users to record music from Internet
radio
stations onto their computers anonymously - circumventing the music
industry's much-publicized
crackdown on piracy. But XM said it is discouraging subscribers from doing
so.
"We don't condone that type of activity, and in fact that can theoretically
constitute
a violation of the user agreement of our service," said XM spokesman Chance
Patterson.
A program called TimeTrax fueled a surge in demand for XM's PCR receiver, a
PC-based
satellite-radio receiver that went on sale about a year and a half ago.
Using the
PCR and TimeTrax, users can record multiple XM stations at once and store
the programming
as individual songs in MP3 or WAV formats.
But the PCR was discontinued recently as XM prepared to launch XM Radio
Online.
"The PCR had been on the market for more than a year and a half, and so
that's sort
of the typical life cycle anyway of some of these consumer electronic
products anyway,"
said Patterson.
Some satellite radio insiders believe the PCR created a big buzz among those

looking
to copy tunes because the sound quality of music from satellite broadcasts
is much
higher than music streamed over the Internet.
Still, analysts believe the chance to listen to about 70 music channels and
about
a half dozen other XM stations online could push more customers toward XM,
which
has more than 2.1 million subscribers.
"There are a lot of people who listen to radio during the workday and this
is a way
to reach those types of consumers," said April Horace, an analyst with Janco

Partners.
"XM has already built a good brand. So for people who want the same content
online,
it makes a lot of sense," said Michelle Abraham, an analyst with
In-Stat/MDR. "Especially
with more broadband connections and new devices that let you take the
content from
your PC to your entertainment center and play it through your home stereo
system."
XM is promoting the new service through a partnership with Dell, offering
buyers
of Dell Inspiron notebooks and Dimension desktops a 30-day trial
subscription to
XM.
XM's competition, New York-based Sirius Satellite Radio, doesn't offer an
Internet-only
subscription, but does lets subscribers listen to its 65 music stations on
the Internet
at no extra charge, and offers 72-hour free trials on the Net. "It's been a
significant reason why people have come to our service," said
Sirius
spokesman Ron Rodrigues.
XM shares rose 30 cents to $29.46 on the Nasdaq Stock Market, where Sirius
shares
fell 1 cent to $2.89. ___

RE: xm radio online service

2004-11-06 Thread Wil James
You can click on the buttons that says decades, news, sports, etc. Once
done, you'll see channels for that genre you chose. It is more of a visual
thing, but I had little success with it. I believe I didn't see the entire
channel lineup for the genre I chose, but was friendly enough. I wouldn't
pay $7.95, ($3.95 for subscribers) a month for something I couldn't fully
use. I would have gotten in touch with tech support, but I'd rather pay for
the satellite than the web.

Kathy Arnold here. I tried to sign up for XM Radio online last night. I
experienced the same problem as you guys did. So, I called their tech
support. Actually, I called the 800 number and they transferred me to tech
support. Anyway, they weren't very helpful. ?They tried, but they were
unable to tell me how to make the XM online accessible. I'd be curious to
know if you guys get any farther then I did. Have a good one.
