Re: Winamp 5.35 and external sound card won't play nice together

2007-11-04 Thread linwood
Dear Cris:

Recently purchased an external sound card to add to the internal card of my
newer notebook which has a 1.0 USB port whereas the newer notebook has a 2.0
notebook and so the external doesn't work well on the newer notebook but
works like it should when used on the old notebook. I'm suspecting I might
be having a USB problem rather than a sound card problem and maybe you are
experiencing the same?

 Hi Bob

From what we can tell, no sound appears to be coming from it, even
when headphones or speakers are plugged into it, that's the root of
the problem. What is interesting about this whole thing is that when
her room mate hooks up her external card to the same computer, it
doesn't work either, but it works fine on other computers in the
house. I'm wondering if this isn't some kind of a driver issue? When
she hooked it up, Windows was successfully able to find the card,
but she didn't get any speech, which is what started this whole thing.
So it looks like it's a driver issue but the problem is I don't know
where to go to remove the drivers so windows can properly find the card
 again.
If we can get windows to not only find the card but install the
drivers we might have a shot at this!
But thanks for the tip, it's helpful.

Can you set the SB Live to be the default sound card and get system sounds
from it? If no, you may need to disable some Creative utilities in
Msconfig. If you do get sound from the SB live you can get the internal
sound card to be the default and set Winamp to use the SB Live. You want
to
make sure that only use preferred devices is not checked in Sounds and
Audio
devices on the audio page.. Then go to the output plug-in in Winamp and
configure it to use the sblive. It should show up as a device if the card
is properly installed and available in sounds and audio devices.

Subject: Winamp 5.35 and external sound card won't play nice together

  Hi folks
I'm posting this question to multiple lists in hopes I can get a
somewhat quick answer. I've got someone who has written to me
privately off list who just got an external sound card, it's a SB live!
She's using a laptop with a signatel soundcard, yeah not the best
but these laptops have never had good sound cards for things.
What she would like to do is separate things, so her window-eyes
software speech goes on one card, and the music from Winamp goes to
the other. She wants to learn how to broadcast, and we've got
everything together but this issue came up yesterday and I haven't
been able to figure out what in hell is going on.
I spent a couple hours with her on the phone and msn trying to get
this to work but without much success. Even though everything is
plugged in properly, the SB Live card simply will not work, and we
can't figure out why. One of her room mates has a very similar card,
and he was able to use it without installing the software for it, and
when he did it required a working pare of eyes which isn't easy to
come by there. I'm just wondering if the card that's not working
actually might require the software to work whereas the other one
didn't seem to? Also,I'm wondering which card should handle which
thing, would the internal sound card handle the software speech
better tthan it would music, remember this is for broadcasting
purposes so she wants the broadcast to sound as good as it can. I've
done everything I can think of, and I am stumped. So, I'm wondering
if any of you folks have any ideas? Just for specific's sake, She's
using Winamp 5.35 and the Nullsoft waveout plugin for her music
output, and in the configuration for that plugin, she has Winamp
pointed to her SB Live external card, which as I said at the
beginning, doesn't work at all. She hears her speech fine because
that's on her regular internal card for the laptop, but no music. Is
there something we're doing wrong, or is it possible that her laptop
and that particular external card just aren't compadible for some
  crazy reason or another?

I hope what I'm asking makes some sense here, so if anyone can give
  some tips, I'd be greatful!
  Thanks!
  Chris

Yes, physically u3 Smart Drives look exactly like a thumb drive and is
inserted into a USB port. However it is more than a storge media as
programs written for the u3 can be launched from the Smart Drive, when

Re: Duplicate File Finder

2006-07-18 Thread linwood
Easy Cleaner is a free, suite of cleanup tools one of which identifies
duplicate files. However, they do ask for a contribution.

Right click on the resulting list, arrow down to sort, select by name,
press enter, and same files will group together. Sure would be nice if
an option would automate this task.

Do a google search for duplic8
This is an excellent duplicate finder; the only crawback is that the
author apparently isn't around or supporting the program, so you can't
register it, even though it asks each time you exit.

For renaming files, look for rname_it

Serprised things didn't work with the original sound card as these days the
sound card is activated. However, you might have someone check settings in

I've got a SB Live!Audigy 2, and the 20 db boost checkbox is there,

Subject: Cannot get good microphone volume

I purchased a new PC a few months ago and, despite playing with the
settings in the Windows volume control, trying two sound cards and
multiple microphones, I cannot seem to get good enough volume without
a lot of hiss. I know I tend to be quite soft-spoken, but I didn't
have this problem on the old PC. I first tried the Realtek card that
came with my PC. It was fairly acceptible for playback, but I had the
low mic volume problem. I then bought a Creative 24-bit USB External
card (I went with that card because I figured it would be easy to
install since it was USB), installed it and updated the drivers, but
again, with trying multiple different brands of microphones, the mic
level was very low unless I cranked the Windows volume control way
up, in which case I had unacceptible hiss. It is interesting to me
that, despite having Advanced Controls checked, I cannot find a mic
boost option in my SB Live, but it does have a microphone volume
control wheel on the card itself, which only worsens the hiss if I
crank it up. I am using Sound Forge 8 on a Shuttle PC with 1 GB of
RAM, Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2, 3.00 gigahertz Intel
Pentium 4, and Sound Blaster Live! 24-bit External with the latest
drivers as of three days ago. Aside from screaming into the
microphones, is there anything else I can do to kick up the volume,
preferably without having to break the bank? The research I've done
shows that the Sound Blaster Live! 24-bit External is not a good card
for recording, but I would prefer to stick with a USB sound card
because I don't know how to install an internal card. However, I will
go with an internal card and pay someone to install it if that is
necessary. I tried a Logitech USB microphone which does work quite
nicely, but I cannot get Jaws to come through my recordings, and for
some crazy reason, my PC reboots spontaneously after having it
connected for more than 15 minutes, even if I'm not using it. With
all the microphones I have tried, I could probably create my own
electronics store on Ebay. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I'm not saying this is the way to do it, and you all may know about it,
 but
 I just found it interesting.
Did you know if you have your files in a folder such as my music in my
documents, you can edit the information right there?
While focused on a track in the listview, press alt enter for the
 properties.
Control tab to the summary page.
Now you could add various information there if you wanted to sort them by
 that column.
But if you tab to the advanced button and enter.
You can arrow down all the information and press f2 to edit each item such
as artist, album title, year, duration, bit rate, so on.
To sort the columns, go to view, choose details and you can check or
 uncheck
what columns to show and move them up or down (which will be the first in
the row). Then go to arrange icons by on the view menu and sort by that
 column.
The only problem jaws still reads the name column first as you arrow down,
so you have to do a say line if you change the order of the columns so
 that
the name Colum isn't the first column in the row.
So I'm not sure that's that useful, but being able to edit the tag
 information might be.

Subject: Hp and Creative DO NOT support two sound cards

I recently was told by Hp support that they do not support two sound
cards.
I don't have official email about this but was told by a support
 supervisor
that they can not help me if I want to use a second audio card at the same
 time.

Today, Creative support emailed me and also told me Creative does not
 support two sound cards.

Neither company has given me a reason why they do not support two sound
cards or how one device can cause the other not to work properly.

It seems Creative can not help me with any problems I might have running
 the
other card even if it is caused by updating their drivers.

Creative support told me to update the drivers to fix another problem.
 Now
I've lost the ability to use the first sound card (Realtek AC'97) for
 speech
 and system sounds again.

Needless to say, I will be ditching the Audigy 4 Pro even though it has so
many great features and does sound good. I will probably buy a USB sound
device to use for speech or even get a serial port adaptor so I can run my
LiteTalk on this computer. I know many people have run down Creative
 sound
cards on this list before but they never really gave good reasons so I
didn't pay much attention. Now I wish I had.

I will never buy another HP product. I advise any blind people not to buy
HP computers if they wish to run more than one sound card.

Price of storage cards is dedtermined by where you buy them but also by the

hi friends, i am now the proud possessor of the edirol r-1, it's a
 fantastic

 a
lot of high quality audio workand therefore need a high quality blind
friendly recorder, and this baby meets all my needs, just one question,
 the
flash card that comes with the recorder is not big enough for what i need,
so i went out and bought a compact one gig flash card, but it cost me an
 arm
and a leg, [and it's bad enough being blind without getting another
disability] seriously, a friend of mine called me tonight telling me that
 i
could purchase one gig flash cards on the net for half the price i payed
for mine in my local computer store, the two flash cards she mentioned
 were

 two

with a four gigabyte flash card, but it recommends using a two gig card,
finally, if anyone on the list is thinking about purchasing the edirol

i say, go for it, it's the best recorder i have come across yet, sorry

Dear Ken:

Doing a full backup sure can be a pain as it not only depends upon the
cApabilities of the program you are using but also there may be hardware
issues? Some hard drives require that you drag-n-drop programs to be copied
is one example.

Lot of luck!

Re: replay observations

Replay AV sounds great but my problem is that I can't download the free
trial. When I try, I get a beep and everything is quiet excedpting that I
can use alt+tab to switch to another program.

I notice that Jonathans presentation focused on streaming audio but I
haven't read any comments about how well this program handles recording from
the sound card and whether or not it conflicts with other speech synthesizer
programs?

 Hi Kurt
Some stations that stream their audio on the net do not stream the
exact same things due to copyright restrictions. In other words, you
could hear When Radio Was on your AM station, but the internet stream
could have something completely different, because the station may
have obtained the rights to play the show on the station, but not to
stream it over the internet. Is what I'm saying making any kind of
 sense?
Setting up your own schedule is quite easy, as long as you remember
the address of the station, the start and end times of the show you
want to record, and you can decide in which audio format you want the
recording to be in. There is plenty of Old Time Radio programming
available in the Replay AV guide, so if you're into that, search
around and give some of the shows a try.

Once you've done it a few times it gets easier. Don't give up on it yet.

that stream on the net do not

At 08:19 PM 3/7/2006, you wrote:
Well, when not busy working I have been playing with the Replay-AV. Here
is what I have noticed. Your streams will not only capture as MP3 even
if you request that. Some of them are in RM anyway, even if some are in
MP3. Many well-known commercial shows (when radio was is an example)
cannot be scheduled. Also, it seems, and more testing is necessary
because I don't know how to do this, that some streams are banned at
certain times during such commercial shows. I tried to get When radio
was last night and got a local feed for the weather instead. Since I
still don't quite understand how to set up a show given radio station
information you have entered, that is how to schedule a show on your own
I don't know. I wanted to schedule KSL from 10 PM pacific to 11 PM
pacific to get when radio was, but can't figure out how to do it. If I
can figure how to make my own schedules, and I locked up my machine this
morning trying to get a link to KSL, I can try that and set up my own
schedule. One entry which was supposed to be Monday night playhouse was
actually a jazz program on CBC. I have difficulty filling out the forms
because you have to remember what goes in each field of some of the
survey information and that is with Jaws 7. I like the program a lot,
and if I can figure out some of these things so I can schedule my own
captures better I will like that too? Am I paranoid or do they actually
only serve a certain number of airings of a particular show and do they
ban the rest or just don't list? Those are my observations, possibly
most out of ignorance but interesting points whatever the answer. Hope I
haven''t covered ground already covered. I listened to Jonathan's
review, and if you want to start out with a tutorial I would gladly pay
for, that would be a good one. Also, and off topic I know is that I
don't know where to hear the Mosen explosion live and somehow missed the
fact that it even existed till I heard his podcast. Sorry about this
being so long. Feel free to correct any really stupid mistakes I have
made here. Kurt

Re: Re[4]: Reading V U Meters In Total Recorder

2006-01-29 Thread linwood
Gentlemen:

Don't know anything about the meters but wonder if you guys can help with
the reason I rejected Total Recorder?

I am a subscriber to Freedombox and they for one acknowledge a conflict with
Total Recorder and I experienced other conflicts yet mention was made of you
using Sounge Forge without a hitch.

As I understand it, Total recorder takes over the sound card and doesn't
play nicely with other sound programs. Did you find a way to prevent this?

My latest challenge is figuring out how I can use Windows Media PLayer 10
but finding it difficult to burn although I don't have a problem with
(ripping). Wonder if either of you have attempted this program?

Will appreciate any comments you care to make.

Dear Gary:

As I understand it, Flash cards are digital and just like you can set the

Usually the faster the speed the more money you pay. Problem is many flash

Well I think we should take it easy and see how it actually is and
how knops and stuff are located on the unit
because it's esential for a blind who want to do serious recordings.

Also, look at it this way. The r1 as it is doesn't take nearly the
advantage of the speed of compact flash, and SD uses way less
 power.
In fact, edirol recommends not buying high speed cards because they use
 more than necessary power.

As far as the mastering effect of the r1, it can be made to sound ok, but
 I can
definitely live without it. I'd really like to see one to see if the
 noise
 floor
has been improved as the r1 is a little bit noisy, but not as bad as,
say, the PMD-660, if some noise floor demonstrations I found online are
 anything to go by.

What I do like about this unit is the low-cut filter, assuming it's at a
good range. This will fix a bunch of SPL
 issues with some microphones.

As far as the price goes, I wanna see what full compass sells it for
 once it's released.
They currently have the best deal on new r1's that I know of at $389.

With most standard sound cards like Sound Blaster Live you can't use
 a
regular microphone directly. You will need a computer microphone. The
computer microphone requires some sort of phantom power that the sound
 card
provides. To use a regular microphone you will need a microphone pre-amp
plugged into the Line Level input.

Subject: Total Recorder and sound questions

Hello there. I'm wondering if anyone on this list deals much with the use
of the Total Recorder program.
I just got it this weekend and am excited with its many posibilities.
However, I'm running into a problem.

I am trying to record using a microphone. I have a laptop that is running
Windows XP, and I have a soundblaster card for a sound card.
I bought one of those headset microphones, and it seems to be working
because when I actually record, I know it is recording what I'm saying.
However, what happens is that I personally can't hear myself as I talk, so
it's hard to set levels.
I've gone to the sound and audio part of the Control Panel to tweek the
settings, and so far, the volume is set right and the line-in is unmuted.

What I'd eventually like to do is to record my minidisks by using a line-in
cable and Total Recorder, but again, it's going to be hard because something
is not allowing me to hear what is going on. Yet, I do know that sound is
feeding through because I was able to record. I just wasn't able to set the
levels without being able to hear what is being recorded.

If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know.
Thanks in advance.

 Subject: Help with Nero, Please

 Hello, Nero Users and Listers!

Oh, man, I messed up my Nero pretty good. I don't know what I did wrong
but
when I go to burn CD now, even if I burn a data disc, when I go to play
it
back in the drive, it shows up as an audio disc when it is supposed to be
a
data one. It does not play at all. I must have unchecked some stuff and
I
don't know what to do to fix it. Could someone please go over the
preferences with me step by step and try to tell me what to reset,
recheck,
and stuff? When things are working right, The drive comes up as New E
when it's a data disc in it. I don't think I am burning a disc now, even
if
it shows up that way. The burner is working, but when I play that same
disc
in my portable mp3 player, now it won't play. So, I did something awful.
I
don't want to reinstall the program--I already packed it away. So, how
can
I fix it without the program CD? I would appreciate your help very much.
 Thanks.

 Mimi

I don't do such dumb things often, thank goodness. I try to learn, but
oh,
 this hurts!

versdion.

Tessa, there is two that I'm aware of, which will do what you are
 suggesting.
1 is gold wave, It's a try before you buy program.

 www.goldwave.com

2 sound forge , more expensive, I don't know much about this one, but
others
 on this list do.

Both are usable with jaws, and both can split files, also can clean up
records. remove a lot of the background noise and pops and clicks.
 hope this helps
