Re: Diamond Cut 5 (DC5)
Hi Hank It's not easy to select areas in a file in Diamond Cut. It may be possible with the Jaws cursor but I think not. As I've said in another email to someone on the list, I edit the file first in Cool Edit (Audition), taking a small portion of file with only the noise and loading it into DC5. I then make a preset of the fingerprint, then load in the complete file with the hiss and then apply the preset I've just made. If you want to be precise then you can't do it at present in DC5 - you must edit the portion somewhere else then import it into DC5. If for instance it's a complete song with hiss then there's no problem - you just load in the file and apply any filter preset. For more limited areas you have to select and save somewhere else then import into DC5. Hopefully the new version will have some of the suggestions I've put to them - they're promising to do something to make transport and selecting more accessible. Also with the automatic analysis and constant checking mode that is coming I'm hoping this will make precise editing and selecting less necessary. At present however I use it to augment my editor as it provides many easy to use filters which are much more powerful. Re: Diamond Cut 5 (DC5)
Hi Gordon, Thanks for that comprehensive outline of Diamond Cut. If they offer a demo then I will try it out. Sounds quite intuitive! Cheers...rocker - Original Message - From: "G. McFarlane" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "PC audio discussion list. " <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Saturday, May 15, 2004 9:36 AM Subject: Re: Diamond Cut 5 (DC5) Hi Rocker I'm afraid I'm not aware of any scripts for JFW and DC5. To be honest I've not used half the features as I really only am interested in my business with audio restoration and once I prepare a file eg the portion I want to process - I do this in Cool Edit Pro (Audition) I then load it into DC5 and apply any of the presets of which there are hundreds. The dialog boxes for each of the functions i.e. Dynamic Processing, Continuous Noise filter, Band Passes, etc., these boxes are perfectly able to be tabbed around and selections chosen. There is a combo box in each dialog box which contains from about 20 to to about 100 options, in the case of noise reduction giving you many fingerprints of different devices, record players, tape machines, dictaphones, reel to reel recorders, all types of dolby settings, 45rpm, 33rpm and 78rpm, etc. which can be applied to the file or previewed first. In the EQ dialog boxes again there are similar presets giving so many options it's more than likely you would be able to find one. In general there's enough for anyone to use there - the difficulty is that if you want to tweak any of these you have more difficulty and would have to use the Jaws cursor to get around with varying degrees of success. As I said earlier however for most people there are enough presets to get by with. The other main problem with the program is that editing is not simple - I only use whole files I've prepared somewhere else eg. Cool Edit. The good news is that they have responded favourably to an email I sent (and others too of course) detailing all the things the program lacked including the need for more transport and selection shortcuts. At present it's accessible menu-wise and dialog box-wise to a good and usable degree with Jaws, but no doubt with continued pressure and perhaps more VIP's giving suggestions, this good program can only get better. I have no hesitation in recommending it at the moment if the features I've described are what you need, and you're not too bothered about tweaking at present. Also because I spend much time analysing a file for the best preset it can take some time to settle on one. With the new program however with its automatic functions not only to ascertain which filters are necessary for the file but also with the ability to adjust as the file proceeds, I can see this taking out much of the drudge work and possibly appealing to the novice who wants a professional finish easily achieved. Take care. Gordon - Original Message - From: "Rocker" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "PC audio discussion list. how do I select the area of hiss in diamond cut? Don't judge me because I'm blind. Judge me by what's inside. if you judge me because I am blind, then it is you who is blind. Re: Diamond Cut 5 (DC5)
Hi There is no wizard to access the presets. You use the straightforward menus perfectly accessible with Jaws, choose the group of presets you wish eg. Continuous Noise Reduction,Dynamic Filters, Bandpass, etc.; each of these bring up a dialog box which can be tabbed around. One of the places you land on with the tab key is a preset combo box from which you can choose from up to a hundred presets - you can then preview the one you've chosen or indeed if you are happy with it, you can apply it to the file.l All this is perfectly accessible to Jaws. You can even slightly fine tune each preset. Some more sophisticated tuning would need th Jaws cursor but generally there's a preset for just about everything. The next version just about to appear has an automatice checking and analysing of the file to which it will then apply the filters it chooses. I think these can even be fine tuned. As I've said in a previous email they appear to be addressing some of these finer points and hopefully this automatic function will be Jaws friendly. The new program will not need anyone to choose a small area of file as a fingerprint for noise reduction of the whole file - it seems to do the analysing itself. It's perfectly true at the moment that selecting a small area as a fingerprint is difficult in DC5 as editing and selecting are difficult but not impossible. I prefer to save a small area of the file in Cool Edit Pro (Audition) - a portion only with the background noise - then import this into DC5 to analyse and make a preset. Then I import the whole file and apply it. To be fair though there's generally a preset which will work fairly well With the new program however fingerprinting will be a thing of the past. Hope some of this helps. Gordon - Original Message - From: "hank" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "PC audio discussion list. Hi Gordon. I think that one reason why I purchased the Soundforge program, was that it seemed to adhere to windows conventions than any other sound editing program. - Original Message - From: "G. Re: Diamond Cut 5 (DC5)
Hi Gordon. It sounds like the Diamond Cut products are quite interesting. I'm using Soundforge, but when I purchased Soundforge 5.0, I also got a deal. I only paid $99 for it as an introductory price. I got a deal on that one. It was 20 cents on a dollar, since Soundforge is around $500. It's good to hear about all the new sound editing programs that are being developed. It's good to have all the noise reduction and vinal restoration that's out, because of all the old recordings we have that we want to have restored. Also, it's good to have things like pitch shift, because maybe when listing to something like oldtime radio, I can control the pitch, so that the characters sound like what we remember them, instead of being set too high; then we can also clean up the extra noise in the recordings. - Original Message - From: "G. This program has had a small following amongst blind people. the parts of the program that are accessible work really well with jaws, which in my opinion you do not need scripts. until the editing features become more accessible, I will continue to use Soundforge, which I believe to still be the better program. -- Rocker <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: Just to confirm you say that this is jfw friendly? obviously the new E Q is not accessible right? There's more detail on the website - I think you'll find it exciting: www.tracertek.com Gordon Here's the email I first received: Introducing DC SIX- A Special Announcement We know that many of you spend a lot of time with DC Five and that you love the feature set. Over the months DC Five has been shipping, we've been told again and again that DC Five is simply the finest and most full featured audio restoration and enhancement product on the market. We've always taken great pride in this. Even though we love DC Five, honesty compels us to report to you that this statement is no longer true. There's another product that takes audio restoration to a whole new level. Happily, it's from us and it's called DC Six! This special edition of our wildly popular (in our humble opinion) newsletter is devoted to one subject - all the scoop on DC Six. If you are a present owner of Enhance/CDR, DCart32, DC Millennium, DC Five, have ever purchased anything from Tracer, or even if you just like to admire great software from afar, you'll want to read this edition from cover to cover. New Features in DC Six When we started to plan DC Six, we decided to focus on the big picture. Basically, we wanted to do three things all at once. We wanted to make the program faster, we wanted it to be easier and we wanted even more power. We think you'll see all three of these goals in the feature set. - DC Six is MUCH faster when processing. We now make even better use of the math functions buried deep in your cpu and the result is a speed improvement on many filters from 10 to 80%. DC Five was fast, but DC Six will go MUCH faster when you press that Run Filter button. You will see this speed improvement on both AMD and Intel processors. - DC Six has a totally new type of filter that we've never offered before. Our new EZ Clean will make it possible to fully dial in the filter to get out clicks, pops, crackle, hum, rumble, surface noise and hiss with less than 5 seconds of prep work. There are no noise samples to be taken - the program finds the noise and removes it automatically. It even adjusts to a changing noise environment automatically. It shows you what it is doing automatically. You'll be automatically amazed by this super easy to use filter. It's just great for any type of record or music recording on tape. - DC Six has another new feature that many of you have been asking for: A video mode. Now you can open AVI and mpeg video files in DC Six and watch the video and hear the audio. You can extract the audio portion of the video file and use the Classic Mode or Fast Edit mode tools on this audio. - DC Six now has support for DirectX plug-ins. If you have other audio processing plugs you can now apply them in DC Six just like our native tools. You can even put them in the Multifilter! - DC Six has a new 20 Band Graphic EQ. This new EQ uses traditional sliders to make it incredibly easy to apply more complex EQ curves. - DC Six now offers the ability to rip audio CDs! This is a much asked for feature. It will even look up your audio CDs and display the name of each track. A single click will get the audio off the CD and onto your hard drive. - DC Six now offers one button delete of .pkf and temp files. If you've found hundreds of these sitting on your hard drive, now you can get rid of them with one click. - DC Six has a new Fat Bottom function in the VVA. This is a bass harmonic synthesizer which can really punch up your bass-challenged recordings. - DC Six now has a new batch RMS gain normalize function. This adds another capability to automatically level volumes among different songs in a compilation. - DC Six now saves in many new compressed audio formats. If you install a new audio Codec on your computer, DC Six will automatically notice and allow you to save in that format. - DC Six adds an entirely new mode to the Continuous Noise Fil

Re: Diamond Cut 5 (DC5)
Hi Rocker I'm afraid I'm not aware of any scripts for JFW and DC5. They have special deals however - when I bought it about 6 months ago it was on offer at $125. They claim to have deals for new users I think. here's the blurb from their email to me. - DC Six adds an entirely new mode to the Continuous Noise Filter called Auto CNF. This is a new type to adaptive tool which does not require a noise sample and is a more advanced version used in the EZ Clean filter. - DC Six will now use files greater than 2GB is size. This has always been a limitation of the .wav file format and not the audio program. We decided to fix it anyway. You can now record your 10 hours of radio

Hi Gary True, editing can be a problem at the moment. But for filtering files and using the menus and bialog boxes it's good at present. With the new enhancements and the commitment to making it more accessible for close editing it should be much better. It's a work in progress, but at present I find it perfectly accessible for whole file processing and when I want to edit I use Audition. Take care. Gordon - Original Message - From: "Gary G. ur computer, DC Six will automatically notice and allow you to save in that format. You can now record your 10 hours of radio without stopping. - DC Six now has cancel buttons and progress indicators from most all functions. - DC Six now has a new Snap-to-Zero-Crossing function. This will allow you to do a cut and paste without creating a click where the paste occurs. - DC Six has a new Clone function which allows you to copy the Source window to the Destination window with one mouse click and offers to do this for you if you are working on part of a source file and don't have a destination file open. - DC Six has two new Paste functions - paste at the end of a file and paste at the beginning. This makes it easy to make sure your audio is being pasted exactly where you want it. - DC Six will ship with a new manual which, believe it or not, will be even larger than our previous version. - And lastly, we'll save a surprise or two for ship time! So when will DC Six Ship and What will it Cost? Our plan is to ship DC Six on (or around) June 15th (this year). With any luck, we'll surprise you all and beat that date! How much is the Upgrade? Hi Gordon, the biggest beef I have with Diamond Cut is that as an editor, it is not accessible at all. other than that, it is a good program! I think that improvements could be made to the sample End noise feature too. -- "G.
