Re: resetting ipod shuffle?

Are you using a USB hub? If so, you might try plugging your iPod
directly into your PC. I'm no USB expert though.

I think you might have more luck with this question on a list
specifically for iTunes and the iPod. I usually send people to the
Portable Player Portal at http://www.hartgen.org/blindipod.html, but
that site doesn't appear to be up right now. You can try sending a
message to blindipod-requ...@freelists.org with the word subscribe in
the subject line.

The new talking Ipod shuffle

2009-03-11 Thread Petro T. Giannakopoulos

Apple Releases New iPod Shuffle With Speech Capabilities
Nick Mediati, PC World

Mar 11, 2009 12:40 pm

Another Tuesday, another new Apple product. Following up last week's new
desktop announcements, Apple today released a redesigned iPod Shuffle. Even
smaller than the last one, the new iPod Shuffle has no playback controls on the
player itself--instead, the playback controls are on the headphone wire. This
change does beg the question: What happens if you lose the bundled headphones?
Does this rule out using third-party headphones?

The big new feature is the iPod Shuffle's inclusion of Apple's VoiceOver
technology. VoiceOver on Mac OS X is Apple's built-in screen reader for the
visually impaired. On the iPod Shuffle, VoiceOver will read you the current
song's title and artist information with a touch of a button. The function was
added to iTunes last fall.

According to Apple, VoiceOver now makes it possible to switch between playlists
on the iPod Shuffle. The iPod Shuffle is multi-lingual, and knows how to speak
14 languages, including Spanish, Japanese, Greek, and Dutch. This begs another
question: What happens if you play a song tagged as explicit? Apple's press
release makes no mention of what happens, but wouldn't it be amusing if it
spoke a warning to you? Imagine: I'm afraid I can't play that, Dave.

The new iPod Shuffle costs $79 and stores 4GB worth of music, or roughly 1000
songs. If you want one, you'll need WIndows XP SP3 or Windows Vista (or Mac OS
X 10.4.11 or higher), and iTunes 8.

Hi Jardata,
to get the shuffle to work, you must format it for windows, and buy Anapod
to put audio file on it to play.
The Anapod for the shuffle will cost $19.00, and the universal will cost
$29.00.

 Dear Lists!

I have an Apple IPOD Shuffle and am trying to get it to set up or work.

First of all, I attempted to recharge the unit by plugging the USB cable
that it came with into the Vista Machine and let the unit charge in its
cradle for up to four hours.

The unit never seemed to charge properly, as the light remained yellow.
However, the unit played when I copied some MP3 files onto the drive for
it. As soon as I plug the ipod in to the usb, it plays in Windows Media
Player. We cannot get it to play from the unit when it is unplugged from
 the computer.

Now, the directions (quick start) say it s fully charged when light is
 green and fully sincted.

My question is, do we have to install itunes on the unit or some other
media player (Real Player or Windows Media Player) to get it to play.

Give me step-by-step directions to setting up the unit if necessary.

Or,

Head to the blind IPOD user page and download rebuild.exe for free.

Once you have formatted your shuffle you can blow away Itunes if you want
and just use rebuild to verify your music folder.

Cue/Review on Ipod Shuffle and other devices.

2006-12-16 Thread Dane Trethowan
Can't speak for other Ipods but if you hold the track-forward track-
back control down, you get cue/review respectively just the same as
you would any other CD player. That's the annoying thing about Iriver
and the Rockbox actually because that facility isn't available.
Its also patchy on some DVD players with MP3 files as well, my
Panasonic DVD player supports cue/review very nicely thanks and
variable speed to boot whereas other DVD players I have here are a
waste of time as far as this feature is concerned.

Surely there would be some reduction in sound quality because of an

Ok, well in a further reply to this, my new Mocro system for example
has what Panasonic terms as a music port on the front of it which
is designed to connect to an Ipod or similar such device through a
headphone socket so the impedence for this particular facility may
not be the same as a line-out, that's something that listers may wish
to chick but I'm now running for my Ipod shuffle manual because I'm
sure it references line-out or connecting the shuffle to a Hi-Fi system.

Ok, well in a further reply to this, my new Mocro system for example has
what Panasonic terms as a music port on the front of it which is designed
to connect to an Ipod or similar such device through a headphone socket so
the impedence for this particular facility may not be the same as a
line-out, that's something that listers may wish to chick but I'm now
running for my Ipod shuffle manual because I'm sure it references line-out
or connecting the shuffle to a Hi-Fi system.

Surely there would be some reduction in sound quality because of an

That's what AI like about my old iriver 320 - it has a line output
also.

The shuffle has a headphone socket, it doubles as a line-out socket if you
wish to connect it to a music port on your Hi-Fi system, line- in or
auxilary connection etc.

Ipod Shuffle and connecting to an audio system

2006-12-15 Thread Dane Trethowan
Hi!
Ok, I've read my Shuffle manual and it doesn't mention connecting to
a Hi-Fi or audio system actually, it just mentions connecting the
headphones to the headphones port so obviously it doesn't have a
dedicated line-out but I can say that it works when I connect it to
the music port on my Micro Hi-Fi here, the auxilary port of my
Panasonic RXED50 portable CD Radio Cassette unit etc. I've also
hooked it up to computer speakers without a problem so I think I can
safely assume from all this that if you were to connect the unit to
the line-in of an amp for instance, you'd get pretty good results
though (as has b een mentioned) not quite as good as you would get if
you had a dedicated line-out socket or port.
Now having said all that, its possible that there may be an Ipod
shuffle dock out there somewhere that gives the user a dedicated line-
out socket.
Thanks for raising this, most interesting.

Re: major ipod shuffle problems

2006-04-26 Thread Kevin Lloyd
Hi Alison.

I'm no expert with the ipods but it sounds like you may have corrupted the
internal database with it going down during a transfer. I'd guess it's
similar to other players and has a means of doing a hard reset. This is
usually done by pressing certain keys to interrupt the start up of the
player and then revealing a menu where you can re-format or clean the
database. There may also be a small hole for inserting a paperclip to do
the same job.

You'll need sighted assistance to do this but you may want to refer to your
manual or the apple support pages first. You might also want to join the
blind ipod mailing list by sending a message to
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
with the word subscribe in the subject line.

 Hi all!
I'm positively at the end of my rope with this thing! This morning, I was
transferring some files over to my shuffle, when anapod explorer froze. I
had to shut it down via the task manager in order to make the window go
away. Now, whenever I plug in my shuffle, the little windows sound plays,
alerting me that a USB device has been plugged in. However, neither Anapod
explorer nor ITunes nor the Ipod updater software recognizes the presence
of
the shuffle. I've tried reinstalling and updating all three pieces of
software with no change in behavior. What else can I possibly do? Any help
 would be greatly appreciated.

 Lary, check out

 http://www.redchairsoftware.com

You can buy a wonderful program called Anapod Explorer. It provides a
windows explorer type of interface to transfer your tunes to your
iPod, which is *much* more accessible and easy than iTunes! To me it
is the only way to go. Unfortunately, iTunes must be present on your
system for everything to worrk, so make sure that you do not uninstall
 iTunes!

Sorry, not exactly a positive post. Quite honestly, I use the iPod shuffle

You can buy a wonderful program called Anapod Explorer. It provides a
windows explorer type of interface to transfer your tunes to your
iPod, which is *much* more accessible and easy than iTunes! To me it
is the only way to go. Unfortunately, iTunes must be present on your
system for everything to worrk, so make sure that you do not uninstall iTunes!
You can buy 2 versions of the Anapod software. One for all iPods

iPod shuffle problem

2005-12-18 Thread Paul Oeser
I used annapod to load an audible book on to my iPod. Most of the
time I can do this without any difficulty. When I loaded my last
book on to the iPod it lost the connection while I was loading the
book. I reformated the iPod and updated to the latest software. I
can load the same book on to the iPod but it won't play. Is there
something that the iPod sees that won't let it play this book? How
can I fix this?

Hi. I've got this plugin, and after reading the documentation, I think I
know what I did wrong originally. When I first tried it, I tried copying
and pasting tracks but it didn't work.
I then realized that you have to actually add songs to your Winamp library,
which I hadn't done before, but can certainly do. The first time, it
messed up my iPod to the point I had to reformat it. Not fun for me.
So i'll give it another try and let you guys know how it works.

Re: Ipod shuffle and winamp plug-in

2005-11-27 Thread Robert Hebert
Control tab to the windows library.
Tab once here and you will hear library button press spacebar.
(I'm assuming you're using Jaws here since you have not said differently).
Now, arrow down until you hear add media and press enter.
From here you need to brows to the place where you store your music files and
highlight that folder.
Press enter and the process of adding your song titles to your Winamp library
should begin. Note, the music directory itself is not transferred, simply a
listing of the titles in your music folder is added to the library so adding
media to library is not really a space issue. A few people have thought this
was the case but it is definitely not.
This process can take from a few seconds up to a half hour or more depending on
how many files you have in your music folder and the operating speed of your
system.
You can contact me privately if you like should you have any problems but the
process is really very simple--it has to be, even I was able to figure it out.

2005-11-27 Thread Chris Skarstad
Hi Robert

Ok, I tried as you suggested as I'd never imported songs into the library
before believe it or not. However when I look at the tracks, all i seem to
see is that it says, no artist, no title for each track. Is there a way I
can change this behavior? I'd really like to get to know the library
better. All I really do with it is listen to Shoutcast radio, but if it can
do lots of cool things with your music, I'd be willing to try it if I can
get it to work right.
Thanks.

I think there is also another setting in general preferences under titles where

Hi. I've got this plugin, and after reading the documentation, I think I
know what I did wrong originally. When I first tried it, I tried copying
and pasting tracks but it didn't work.
I then realized that you have to actually add songs to your Winamp

which I hadn't done before, but can certainly do. The first time, it
messed up my iPod to the point I had to reformat it. Not fun for me.
So i'll give it another try and let you guys know how it works.

thought you might find it interesting. I don't have an ipod shuffle and know
nothing more than this so please don't ask me any questions - just thought I'd
pass this on second hand so to speak.

Just picked up on a new plug in for WinAmp that allows it to upload music

and is supposed to be screen reader friendly. Hope
it is of use to you.

Subject: I conquered the iPod shuffle!!!

Hi all!

This is going to be a rather long post, so if you're really not
interested, feel free to move along to the next message or whatever you'd
like to do. For those who are interested though, I'd like to share a few
tips as to how I got the shuffle to work for me. I gotta give a big
thanks to Anna Dresner, who just wrote a great book on this whole thing. I
haven't purchased iit yet but will do so soon.
Ok, here goes!

The iPod shuffle is probably the most accessible version of the iPod out
there. It's a very small device, about the size of a pack of gum, but
maybe just a little bit wider and a bit thicker as well. It's white in
color but if you have any vision you can buy skins for it which will
change it all kinds of colors. It also comes with earbuds, and a little
lanyard for hanging it around your neck.
It's very light, weighing in at all about 1 7th of an ounce!
So this is a tiny lil thing, lol.
On one end you have a headphone jack. You just plug the included earbuds
into it or if you have another pare of headphones with a similar plug,
those will work as well.
On the opposite end, you have the USB connection. It is covered up by a
little removable piece of plastic that you can take off and put back on.
Don't lose this little baby, because you only get one.
You can plug the shuffle directly into the USB port on the back of your
computer. The internal battery is charged when you do this. So you'll
probably want to keep it plugged in there for about 4 hours or so. I'm
sure you can probably use the shuffle while the battery is charging, but
for the very first time I wanted to give it a full charge. With the unit
you get a software cd containing the iPod updater software and a copy of
iTunes. As you guys read before, I was originally dead set against
installing iTunes. I didn't want it on my computer because I didn't think
I would ever use it. Then I found out about Brian's scripts, which may
change my mind about that. The first time I installed the software, I
chose not to install iTunes directly afterwords. You'll want to do this,
especially if you'll be using alternative software to transfer your files.
Like others have said on the list, for some unknown reason, iTunes must be
present on your system in order for everything to work. Without it
installed, Anapod Explorer wouldn't even find my iPod.
Windows found it, but not Anapod.
One very perplexing thing in all this. In order to continue with the
install of your iPod software, the instalation program is going to ask for
the 11 digit serial number found on the box for your iPod. Write this
number down, because you're going to need it. The other problem I had
with this, at least with JAWS 6, is that when it presents this dialogue,
the edit box to type the number into is not immediately available. The
only way i was able to get it typed in is to have sighted help moving the
mouse to the specific spot on the screen so that JAWS would find the focus
in the edit field. You can then type in the serial number and continue
with the install.

So, after this, you just install the iPod updater software, at which time,
it should tell you if your iPod needs to be formatted. Mine didn't need
to be, but the updater program will let you re-initialize the iPod if you
need to do it.
If all goes well with this, then it's time to install the iTunes
software. You may be asked to reboot when you're finished. If you are,
please do so. When you come back up, you'll probably be asked to register
your iPod with Apple. You'll want to do that, in case you run into any
technicle problems, and they can find your information in their database a
little easier. Just connect your iPod to your computer via the USB Port if
you haven't already done so, and follow the onscreen prompts and
you'll first give your iPod a name and set a few other preferences.
Now, open up iTunes, and go to the edit menu. You'll need to use your
screenreader's review cursor a lot for this, but it can most certainly be
done. Once in the edit menu, choose preferences. You'll want to make
sure that the setting for iTunes to load when this iPod is connected is
not! checked. so uncheck that box, and in the iPod tab, make sure you
check the box for disc use mode. there'll be a dialogue that comes up
letting you know that doing this makes it like a drive in windows, but
this is ok so just press the ok button.

After that, you can install Anapod explorer. All of the default settings
it gives you are fine, so there probably isn't much of a need to change
any of them.
When you install it, you'll want to go to your system tray. you should
see an item there that says, Anapod Manager iPod shuffle. Press enter
and from the menu, choose the item that says, connect

it should tell you if your iPod needs to be formatted.

When you install it, you'll want to go to your system tray. you should

I haven't purchased iit yet but will do so soon.

It also comes with earbuds, and a
little lanyard for hanging it around your neck.

You'll want to do this,
especially if you'll be using alternative software to transfer your
files. Like others have said on the list, for some unknown reason, iTunes
must be present on your system in order for everything to work. Without
it installed, Anapod Explorer wouldn't even find my iPod.

Windows found it, but not Anapod.
One very perplexing thing in all this. In order to continue with the
install of your iPod software, the instalation program is going to ask
for the 11 digit serial number found on the box for your iPod. Write
this number down, because you're going to need it. The other problem I
had with this, at least with JAWS 6, is that when it presents this
dialogue, the edit box to type the number into is not immediately
available. The only way i was able to get it typed in is to have sighted
help moving the mouse to the specific spot on the screen so that JAWS
would find the focus in the edit field. You can then type in the serial
number and continue with the install.

So, after this, you just install the iPod updater software, at which
time, it should tell you if your iPod needs to be formatted. Mine
didn't need to be, but the updater program will let you re-initialize the
iPod if you need to do it.
If all goes well with this, then it's time to install the iTunes
software. You may be asked to reboot when you're finished. If you are,
please do so. When you come back up, you'll probably be asked to
register your iPod with Apple. You'll want to do that, in case you run
into any technicle problems, and they can find your information in their
database a little easier. Just connect your iPod to your computer via the
USB Port if you haven't already done so, and follow the onscreen prompts

Now, open up iTunes, and go to the edit menu. You'll need to use your

Hi folks
I just recently got myself an iPod shuffle. If you don't know what one
of
these little beauties is, where've ya been?
check out http://www.ipod.com and go to the iPod shuffle link. Ok with
all
that out of the way, here's the situation. For a while now a lot of
people
have said that the better program to use to transfer songs to your iPod
is
Anapod explorer, located at http://www.anapod.com
It gives the process of transfering songs a windows explorer type of
interface, and I'm definitely for that. I didn't and in its current
state,
won't ever install iTunes.
So I got everything set up. I hooked the iPod up to my computer's USB
port
and just as it should, Windows XP recognizes the iPod as a drive, it's

drive g in case anyone is interested. You're supposed to make sure you
can
do this before you get started with Anapod Explorer. Ok, so i did that.
 i
then went and downloaded and installed the newest version of Anapod
explorer, I got the trial version and right now I'm glad I did because
as I
write this I'm still not able to use it much.
They tell you to connect your iPod to the computer via USB. Then,
you're
supposed to go to the system tray and right click on the Anapod manager

icon, and choose the connect iPod shuffle option. When I do this I
get an
error message saying that Anapod couldn't find any windows iPods, even

though Windows can see it as a drive. It suggests running the updater
and
restoring the iPod to its factory defaults, which i did.
Every time I try to access the shuffle in this way I get this error
message. I'm wondering if anyone else who uses this software has had a

similar error message, and if so, how'd you get around it? also, are
there
any other accessible programs for transfering songs to and from your
iPod?
I'd really love to actually use the thing I paid so much for.

Thanks.

The first release of the scripts will just focus upon getting music across
from ITunes to the Shuffle and manipulating the software and hardware. Since
I wrote, I have also made it possible to easily view the contents of a CD in
ITunes and import songs into your ITunes library, even selecting
non-contiguous songs is easy to do.
I'll give anything a try, so let's get this release out, then I'll take a
look at the music store.

At 09:32 PM 6/24/2005, you wrote:

Hi
Here is a message I recently posted to the blind audible list. I wasn't
going to post it here, but given Chris's message, here goes.

I was very much inspired by Anna Dresner's book which I purchased from
national braille press recently, entitled The IPod Experience, to begin
creating some jaws scripts for ITunes.
These scripts will be free of charge, basically because I have created
them since I personally want access to ITunes and the Shuffle to transfer
books from
audible. They should be ready for anyone who would like them some time
within the next two weeks, and if people would like them as and when,
please send

me a message.
At the moment, the following features are included. Please remember I am
at an early stage with this.
1. I have included the ability to track focus in the various lists, for
example what I call the main category list displaying such items as
library, radio,
music store, etc. The good thing is that my scripts do not depend upon
highlight colour assignments to track the focus. This should also apply
to the
list of songs in the opposite list which shows which songs are on the
IPod Shuffle, although this has not been tested yet as I am awaiting my
new IPod

from Audible.
2. The concept behind these scripts is that everything should be
accessible from the keyboard. Therefore, we have a keystroke which moves
you directly
into the library area. Once there, you can use navigational keystrokes
to move forward and back through the available songs in your library.
Jaws will
announce the song in the library as you move to it, and will advise you
when you get to the top or bottom of the list.
3. If you find a song you wish to manipulate in the library with the
library navigation keys, simply select it with a keystroke, then for
example hit delete

or whatever you want to do. For example, enter will play the song.
4. The other thing I have done is to make it possible to drag and drop
into ITunes from windows explorer, and this seems to work well with
audible books.
You find the file you want, copy it to the clipboard with control+C, then
alt+tab over to ITunes, and hit control+V to paste it in there.
That's about it for the moment, but if anyone has any further
suggestions, feel free to let me know.

Brian Hartgen

Subject: Anapod Explorer and the iPod shuffle

Hi folks
I just recently got myself an iPod shuffle. If you don't know what one of
these little beauties is, where've ya been?
check out http://www.ipod.com and go to the iPod shuffle link. Ok with all
that out of the way, here's the situation. For a while now a lot of people
have said that the better program to use to transfer songs to your iPod is
Anapod explorer, located at http://www.anapod.com It gives the process of
transfering songs a windows explorer type of interface, and I'm definitely
for that. I didn't and in its current state, won't ever install iTunes.
So I got everything set up. I hooked the iPod up to my computer's USB port
and just as it should, Windows XP recognizes the iPod as a drive, it's drive
g in case anyone is interested. You're supposed to make sure you can do this
before you get started with Anapod Explorer. Ok, so i did that. i then went
and downloaded and installed the newest version of Anapod explorer, I got
the trial version and right now I'm glad I did because as I write this I'm
still not able to use it much.
They tell you to connect your iPod to the computer via USB. Then, you're
supposed to go to the system tray and right click on the Anapod manager
icon, and choose the connect iPod shuffle option. When I do this I get an
error message saying that Anapod couldn't find any windows iPods, even
though Windows can see it as a drive. It suggests running the updater and
restoring the iPod to its factory defaults, which i did.
Every time I try to access the shuffle in this way I get this error message.
I'm wondering if anyone else who uses this software has had a similar error
message, and if so, how'd you get around it? also, are there any other
accessible programs for transfering songs to and from your iPod?
I'd really love to actually use the thing I paid so much for.

Thanks.

I was very much inspired by Anna Dresner's book which I purchased from

creating some jaws scripts for ITunes.

This should also apply to the
list of songs in the opposite list which shows which songs are on the IPod
Shuffle, although this has not been tested yet as I am awaiting my new IPod

from Audible.
2. The concept behind these scripts is that everything should be
accessible from the keyboard. Therefore, we have a keystroke which moves
you directly
into the library area. Once there, you can use navigational keystrokes to
move forward and back through the available songs in your library. Jaws will
announce the song in the library as you move to it, and will advise you
when you get to the top or bottom of the list.

That's about it for the moment, but if anyone has any further suggestions,
feel free to let me know.

ipod shuffle

2005-05-09 Thread Juan Hernandez
Hello everyone,

if anyone is interested, I have found out some good information.

I have a ipod shuffle, just got it actually, and I got sick and tired of the
freaking itunes interface for copying mp3s to my ipod. so I went on the web
and searched a new solution.

this solution I found requires python to be installed, and will run on any
platform that supports python.

whatyou can do is just copy mp3s or other supported audio files onto the ipod
shuffle, you can either put them in the main directory, the rot dir, or put
files in folders on it. then you run this rebuild_db python application right
off the ipod shuffle, and it rebuilds the database on the shuffle. it seems to
work great. I've used it on two ipods, and 4 different computers.

in a few days when I get my imac I will try it on that.

If you want any more information check out this website,

http://shuffle-db.sourceforge.net/
take care.

Ipod Shuffle

2005-02-21 Thread Jim Fettgather
Hi there, I am attempting to confirm a suspicion with the Ipod Shuffle, and
that is that music must indeed be transfered from the PC using the Itunes
software. I could not get it to work using Windows Explorer, although it
makes a fine jump drive when using this method to transfer files.
I believe that I had read that a new version of Anapod Explorer will
eventually support an alternative method to the Itunes program, but I also
wanted to make certain that Windows Explorer is not an option, unless I am
doing something incorrectly.
Thanks.

Hi,

Anapod enables you to use a tree-view that looks like windows explorer. I
don't know about its support for the ipod shuffle (except that someone on
this list said as much recently). You may want to check out

As far as i know, any ipod will not work with windows explorer for
transfering music and after listening it, because ipod makes special
database where the tracks are stored that its possible to listen to them.
However i also found that anapod explorer will be updated for ipod shuffle
support. I also found a free program called vpod which transfers music files
from ipod to pc and from pc to ipod, but the last version came out in 2003.
I contacted the author of the program so in a short time i hope that the
answer will be positive about ipod shuffle. Anyway i'll drop info on the

Hope that helps,

Subject: RE: Apple Ipod Shuffle accessible?

Hi Chris,

I got an ipod just after Christmas and -- with a little help from some
listers -- I am able to transfer music and manage it once it's on the
ipod.

I bought a program called Anapod explorer (from a company called Red
Chair
Software) that allows me to access the contents of the ipod in a tree
format
just like windows explorer. The program is pretty cheap (around $25) and
works great with jfw. The one drawback with anapod is that you need
another
program to do the ripping and encoding of the tracks. Red Chair Software
recommends a program called audio grabber but I'm using Itunes to do the
import of tracks mostly because it's ultimately easier despite the
unfriendliness of the app in general.

The long and short of it is that you can absolutely transfer and manage
your
music on the ipod. I love the ipod and am not sorry I bought one.

My understanding of the ipod shuffle is that, unlike the ipod, you have
to
load the music in the order in which you want to hear it. In other words
I
don't think you can do playlists or random play. That's not an issue for
me
since I load the songs in my preferred order anyway.

Sorry for the lengthy post but I hope it was helpful.

   Hi folks
I just returned to the list after a long absence, so it's cool to be
back
here. Since I just got back, I haven't seen any messages, but I wanted
to
see if anyone had heard about the upcoming Ipod Shuffle, and if it
could
 possibly be accessible.
I'm sure that the unit itself is pretty easy to use, but of course my
concern is the ability to transfer files to it. I understand that
because
it's from Apple, they're of course including the Apple iTunes
software,
which by all accounts is not accessible with JAWS. I'm just wondering
if
anyone has developed any other software that may work in place of
iTunes,
and if so where it can be gotten ahold of and any other info? I'd
really
love to have one of these Ipod Shuffles, because the price is
certainly
something I can afford, but if it's not going to be easy to use,
I'd rather wait for something better. I've heard about something
called
Rockbox for the Archos mp3 players, but I'm not sure if that would
also
work with the Apple Ipods. I would suspect not but I wanted to see if
I
could find out anything. Any info is most definitely appreciated!
 and once
again if this has been discussed ad nausium on the list my apologies.
 thanks!
 Chris

you wouldn't be able to use the menus anyway when it isn't connected. So I
guess the answer is not really.

Subject: RE: MP3 Ipod

Hello,
I won an Ipod at work and have been able to get it somewhat functional. The
first step was to ditch the Itunes software, which I found totally unusable.
There is a peace of software called Anapod Explorer put out by RedChair
software which works like a dream. The URL is
www.redchairsoftware.com
and
It organizes the Ipod in to folders and puts an icon on your desktop which
you basically access like just another folder in My Computer. You can
either copy/paste or send-to files to this window just like you can a folder
on your hard drive, and Anapod even lets you manipulate playlists in an
intuitive manner. It doesn't insist on synchronizing the Ipod with a
library on your computer as Itunes apparently does. The documentation is
called the Omnitome and is on their website.

In terms of using the device itself, I found that the remote control is
far the easiest interface. There are definite buttons for play/pause,
previous and next. You press down on the prev. and next buttons to fast
forward or rewind through a selection. I have had limited success in using
the unit itself by counting the audible clicks emitted by the Ipod when you
access the touch wheel. The second selection on the menu is playlists and
then you touch the middle button for enter. If you numerically sequence
your playlists in Anapod, you can then count clicks to the playlist you
want, enter, then either touch the top of the wheel to play or use the play
button on the remote. Not the easiest interface in the world to use, but
with a little elbow grease, it can be made to cooperate a little. I highly
recommend that anyone interested in using an Ipod check out Anapod explorer.
I also found it essential to sit with a sighted person enough to get some
guidance in figuring out the interface. Hope these remarks are helpful.

hi
The more information out there, the better.
Don't ever apologize for a lengthy post if it's helpful to someone else,

into a MuVo from Creative labs. From what I can tell, it seems a bit more
inexpensive, and if I don't have to use any special software to transfer
files from my computer to the MuVo, so much the better.

Re: Apple Ipod Shuffle accessible?

2005-01-22 Thread Christopher J Chaltain
I can see I'm going to have to do a bit of research on this, but I was
under the impression that the iPod shuffle was a flash memory based MP3
player and it cost around $100. I've heard one of the controversial
issues about the iPod Shuffle is that it has no display, making some
wonder how successful it'll be. I assume this means that at least playing
the iPod Shuffle should be fairly accessible. What I don't understand is
how this makes it so different from say the Creative MuVo which is a flash
memory based MP3 player without a display that costs around $80. the MuVo
is also nice because you don't need any proprietary software to copy music
to it. You just plug it into your computer's USB port, and it shows up as
a removeable drive. You can then use Windows Explorer to move MP3's,
WMA's, ..., over to it. Of course, you could also just use it to transfer
files from system to system.
