I decided to get the sound professionals binaural mics used on so many
Blind Cool Tech podcasts. They are model SP-TFB-2. Together with a bag to
keep the mics in the total was $81. With my $25 Pay Pal reward voucher it
came down to around $56. Not a bad price. If I decide to get the wind
screens later I can always do that.

Very easy, to adjust recording level when set to manual, you press
left or right arrows. 16 levels.

To increase playback monitor volume through headphones while
recording, up and down arrows work in the usual way.

What isn't immediately apparent about the Dm-520 internal mics is
that the unit works a bit like a shot-gun. Most of the sound is
taken in from the top end of the unit, not from the front or back
sides of the machine.

So, if you are recording a person, you really want to point the end
of the unit towards their voice, not hold the unit vertically.

I haven't done major tests with external mics, and I don't know what
the real mic preamp noise is like on the machine. I hope it is a lot
better than the audio quality on the DS-71 when external mics are
used, as it was below par in my view.

For the record, this machine isn't very downwards compatible with the
mic extension cord and remote switch that comes with the DS-50 and the

DS-71.

I
made a remote recording the other day, only to find it was blank.
This was with a monaural external mic. Wasn't very happy.

There's a nice soni stereo mic that does exactly what you want and yes,
it
does have a clip. A abit pricy though at about $89.00, depending on
where
you get it. I got mine with the recorder from Fergeson Enterprises.

I got my new DM-520 today and am having fun with it. The built-in mic
makes
some great recordings but environmental recordings are going to be
tricky

although the writst strap will help. What I need is a decent stereo mic
that

won't break the bank. Something that clipts to a shirt, fits on glasses
or
in the ears. Any recommendations?

What isn't immediately apparent about the Dm-520 internal mics is that
the

unit works a bit like a shot-gun. Most of the sound is taken in from the
top end of the unit, not from the front or back sides of the machine.

So, if you are recording a person, you really want to point the end of
the

unit towards their voice, not hold the unit vertically.

I haven't done major tests with external mics, and I don't know what the
real mic preamp noise is like on the machine. I hope it is a lot better
than the audio quality on the DS-71 when external mics are used, as it
was

below par in my view.

For the record, this machine isn't very downwards compatible with the mic
extension cord and remote switch that comes with the DS-50 and the DS-71.
I
made a remote recording the other day, only to find it was blank. This
was

with a monaural external mic. Wasn't very happy.

Tim

There's a nice soni stereo mic that does exactly what you want and yes,
it
does have a clip. A abit pricy though at about $89.00, depending on
where
you get it. I got mine with the recorder from Fergeson Enterprises.

Very easy, to adjust recording level when set to manual, you press left or
right arrows. 16 levels.

To increase playback monitor volume through headphones while recording, up
and down arrows work in the usual way.

hi, thanks, also if I don't want timer recording or anything, how do I turn
it off completely, I made one the other day, and it turned off right in the
middle of it I hadn't even stopped it it just beeped at me I thought the
batteries might had been low but they weren't but when I played it back it
played just fine just cut off at the 4 min mark or so so wondering what
might have caused that? thanks much! lol this way if I am making something
it doesn't cut off right in the middle of it

Is that the ECM-MS907? I can vouch for the quality of the audio done using
it. The stereo separation is great for a one-point mic; it tends to distort
a little bit at high noise levels, but other than that...it's a great mic.
Oh, and yeah...I don't know if Sony has finally fixed the design, but I am
really not much for how relatively fragile the unit is.

There's a nice soni stereo mic that does exactly what you want and yes,
it
does have a clip. A abit pricy though at about $89.00, depending on
where

you get it. I got mine with the recorder from Fergeson Enterprises.

I got my new DM-520 today and am having fun with it. The built-in mic
makes
some great recordings but environmental recordings are going to be tricky
although the writst strap will help. What I need is a decent stereo mic
that

won't break the bank. Something that clipts to a shirt, fits on glasses

2009-12-10 Thread Bob Seed
I think that one has to keep in mind that although the quality of these
machines is good their main function is that they are first and foremost
dictation machines, and to expect anything more is simply pushing the
envelope a little. Go to

Very easy, to adjust recording level when set to manual, you press left or
right arrows. 16 levels.

To increase playback monitor volume through headphones while recording, up
and down arrows work in the usual way.

RE: What is a good stereo mic for the DM-520

2009-12-10 Thread Dave McElroy WA6BEF
The model of the Soni mic is ESM719. As I've said, I'm happy with it. Now
while there is I think really good stereo separation, there is no doubt that
two more separated mics would do better; you just have to know that there is
some constraint due to space. Also, I wish there was a wind screen
included. Nonetheless, it would seem to be a good solution and now I just
have to learn how to edit and how to judge proper volume.

RE: What is a good stereo mic for the DM-520

2009-12-09 Thread Tim Noonan
What isn't immediately apparent about the Dm-520 internal mics is that the
unit works a bit like a shot-gun. Most of the sound is taken in from the
top end of the unit, not from the front or back sides of the machine.

So, if you are recording a person, you really want to point the end of the
unit towards their voice, not hold the unit vertically.

I haven't done major tests with external mics, and I don't know what the
real mic preamp noise is like on the machine. I hope it is a lot better
than the audio quality on the DS-71 when external mics are used, as it was
below par in my view.

For the record, this machine isn't very downwards compatible with the mic
extension cord and remote switch that comes with the DS-50 and the DS-71. I
made a remote recording the other day, only to find it was blank. This was
with a monaural external mic. Wasn't very happy.

Tim

Re: What is a good stereo mic for the DM-520

2009-12-09 Thread Robert Logue
Hi Jamie. I also just got a dm-520. I'm wondering about external
microphones too. I'm a bit disappointed in the handling noise with the
internal microphones. So, you really need to put the unit down to make good
recordings. I don't think it will work well as a hand held recorder. I
tried using it as a voice recorder in my shirt pocket but got a lot of noise
when I moved, even slightly.

I'm going to try the Sony microphone that came with a cassette recorder when
I can find it. Unfortunately, the zoom settings won't work properly with an
external microphone.
