Re: MP3 Directcut

2007-08-15 Thread Mike Pietruk
RedButton is a program, sold through

www.radiotime.com

designed to record radio stations that stream via the net.
There is a fully functioning 14-day trial version which can be converted
into a permanent version for just under $30.
While recordings are made on your pc, the scheduling of recordings is done
via the RadioTime website.
Radiotime.com has one of the largest databases of on-the-air streams
around along with the ability to search by program titles and hosts.
Speaking from personal experience, the service is very responsive in
making corrections and additions when one reports them.
These are often made to the database the same day
when one submits them.
Even if one doesn't want to record radio, radiotime.com is a great
resource for info on internet radio.
The listening side of the service is free.

Re: MP3 Directcut

2007-08-15 Thread Mike Pietruk
Kelley

While the volume levels were correct all along, what caused the problem
was that the appropriate setting required for recording wasn't checked.

For the benefit of readers, here is how I stumbled upon the solution.
Knowing that apparently nothing would record, I decided to attempt to have
my RedButton software attempt to record WGN, Chicago.
Not surprisingly, the recording wouldn't commence.
I went into the pc's sound manager and looked for various recording
property check boxes for line in, mike, cd, etc.
Having no idea which might impact the recording of internet streams, I one
by one attempted to check the boxes (as you guessed, Kelley, all were
unchecked).
RedButton allows one to monitor what is being recorded, assuming something
is recording, of course.
Suddenly, out of the blue, I heard the dignified voice of Milt Rosenberg
interviewing someone on "Extension 720" as a highlight which WGN streams
when it cannot stream regular programming due to Cubs baseball.
I checked, to make certain, and indeed iI had a recording on the hd.
I can tell everyone that I have never, in the 35 or so years that Milt has
hosted "Extension 720" been so elated to hear the U of Chicago psychology
prof interview anyone !!

And, oh yes, I saved the settings into the Quickmix default file
default.qmx

which now, thanks to a msg posted by Sarah Alawami last week, starts as
the notebook starts up and now is also available via the desktop.
And, I'll be doing an image of that hd later today in the event we ever
have to do a total system restore.

So, once again, Kelley, thanks for asking the right questions which
changed my focus from tweeking MP3 Directcut to what was required,
enabling the pc itself to record.

Re: MP3 Directcut

Mike,

don't give up just yet. I had the same feeling once until I realized that
new Windows installs mute nearly all the recording inputs. make sure you
are looking at the recording properties in volume control rather than the
playback properties. also, make sure your line in jacks and microphone are
unmuted. On most Windows machines, you can only select the line in or
microphone for recording but not both at the same time. Be sure the jack
you are recording from is unmuted and selected.

Kelly

All 5 recording settingsfound under sndvol32 are at 100 levels where 500 =
no sound and 0 = max; so that would appear ok.
Your mentioning of other recording programs had me test Audacity;
guess what, no sound either.
So this would suggest

that the culprit is not mp3 Directcut.

BTW, podcasts and internet streaming play fine; and, I, out of sheer
curiosity, took one of the recorded files and attempted to listen to them
on another machine.

Is this problem resolvable; or am I best just forgetting about ever using
this notebook for recording streams and the like.

Have you successfully made recordings using other programs with this
laptop? Also, have you checked the appropiate volume settings in
Windows volume controll?

Re: mp3 directcut problem

2004-11-10 Thread Susan Wojtecki
Rob,
Thank you so much for these instructions. I had downloaded the program
about two weeks ago but had not had the time to really play with it to learn
it, so I appreciate all the directions in one place. If no one else has
suggested it, I would suggest that you consider submitting this as a
demonstration/review to Main Menu at ACB-radio, because they are always
looking for good quality technical material.

Just one question ... I installed the lame.dll file into the program folder
but probably not in the right place because I cannot get it to show up among
the encoders. Where do I need to put it so that it will be recognized and
how do I configure it? Many thanks.

Susan
