Re: Them little round plastic things

2006-12-30 Thread Dane Trethowan
Ok, here's my original message on the subject of the Imic posted on 4
December 2006.
“ Subject:Them little round plastic things

Hi All!

I'm a user of 2 very different computer systems here, I use standard

PC'S with Windows and LINUX and I use my trusty Mac so when I heard

about a small sound device that could be plugged into all my machines

without any need for drivers I was most interested hence the arrival

of my Imic today.

I felt cheated there for a while when i received the box, something

as small as this promising me good audio quality? My misgivings

increased upon the opening of the box to discover that the Imic is

about 1 and a half inches round, it looks almost comical, like one of

those toys we used to play with as kids, like an oversized watch or a

standard sized lollypop but the outside looks I can assure you having

tested this little beauty are truly deceptive.

The Imic plugs into a USB 2.0 port of your computer and as I've

already stated, whether you're a fan of your Mac or of your PC makes

no difference whatsoever, just plug the Imic in and you have another

sound device, great for those laptop systems that don't have a full

sound device built-in.

The layout of the Imic is extremely simple, just 2 3.5MM minijack

stereo sockets and 1 switch. One socket is for line-out whilst the

other is for line-in/stereo microphone, the switch toggles the line-

in socket between microphone and line-in.

So how does it perform? just as good as any other sound card or

device as I said earlier, I'm amazed.

How do you know its connected? With the Mac you see it available as

an audio input/output device. In Windows, you'll see it in the list

of audio devices under the audio tab in Sound.

How much is an Imic? An absolute steal at $50.00 Australia, that's

what I paid for mine.

A CD ROM comes with the Imic but as yet I haven't examined its

contents, I've had no need to.”

I find the IMic to be useful because it gives me a line in jack for
my laptop. But unless I'm missing something, not the first or last
time this would happen, it is more limited than the standard laptop
sound card. I can't use it to capture my voice and the software
synthesizer simultaneously. I didn't look at the cd, and don't have
it any more, so perhaps there are more options for a mixer there, but
with the default installation I can't see how to do this.

and love it to death. I wish I could get a couple more, just to have
them in reserve, just in case, but the supply seems to have dried up.

No, that's quite untrue, the audio quality is absolutely brilliant
and a steal! for the price you'll pay.

Ok, well I'm not using software speech with mine however if you're
using a laptop as I do then I cannot see why you can't confugre
thigns so that the software speech comes out of the output of the
laptops internal card that way you can do whatever you wish with the
Imic.

it any more, so perhaps there are more options for a mixer there, but
with the default installation I can't see how to do this.

Well this is in fact a a sound card if you like, has the same
functionality only difference being that it is external rahter than
being internal which of course has advantages and disadvantages. The
main advantage being the computer generated noise level that some
internal audio devices suffer from, with the Imic this is absolutely
nill and the quality of audio is absolutely first class. I'm toying
with the idea of getting a few more of these things and ditching all
my sound cards and onboard internal audio devices of all my computers
entirely.

I wondered that myself actually, I don't know. Grifin Technology make
the Imic so check with them I guess.
I also neglected to mention that as this device doesn't require
drivers on a PC or a Mac then its damn useful to use if you're on the
road installing Windows on different computers as Windows just finds
the Imic and uses it so you can get Narrator up and running to
complete the Windows Install if you need to.

My missgivings
increased upon the opening of the box to discover that the Imic is
about 1 and a half inches round, it looks almost comical, like one of
those toys we used to play with as kids, like an oversized watch or a
standard sized lollypop but the outside looks I can assure you having
tested this little beauty are truly deceptive.
A CD ROM comes with the Imic but as yet I haven't examined its
contents, I've had no need to.

My missgivings
increased upon the opening of the box to discover that the Imic is
about 1 and a half inches round, it looks almost comical, like one of
those toys we used to play with as kids, like an oversized watch or a
standard sized lollypop but the outside looks I can assure you having
tested this little beauty are truly deceptive.
A CD ROM comes with the Imic but as yet I haven't examined its
contents, I've had no need to.

Re: Them little round plastic things

2006-12-07 Thread Dane Trethowan

I've tried to send a message to the pc-audio list in reply to your
question but it keeps bouncing so here's the original message I wrote
again, if it bounces back from the list again then at least I know
you will have received it yourself this time.
 Hi again!
Well someone on this list asked had I tested my Imic with JFW to
see how sluggish it was. well I had JFW running on one of my
machines here so thought I'd give the Imic a go, here are the results.
I am using JFW 7.1 and I have this running on a Windows XP
machine.. Actually, the machine isn't designed to run Windows XP at
all as the machine is a Pentium II 400MHZ system wit with 256 Meg
of memory and USB 1.1 only so I'll be honest with you all, I
thought the whole thing would fall into a heap with the Imic but
that wasn't to be, having changed the audio settings in Audio
devices to reflect the Imic which appeared under Audio Devices when
I plugged it in, I then unplugged the speakers from my Audigy card
and plugged them into the Imic, bloody brliiant!
I had to do some volume setting ajustments but not a sign of
sliggishness with JFW anywhere and various applications on the
machine were running quite happily in the background.
 Hope that answers your question.
 Cheers

I heard these USB devices end up having latency. I wonder if that is between
multiple devices not being in sync or if it really takes enough time that if
you record something that it is going in the file a ways later than it was

I also neglected to mention that as this device doesn't require
drivers on a PC or a Mac then its damn useful to use if you're on the

A CD ROM comes with the Imic but as yet I haven't examined its
contents, I've had no need to.

I've tried to send a message to the pc-audio list in reply to your
question but it keeps bouncing so here's the original message I wrote
again, if it bounces back from the list again then at least I know
you will have received it yourself this time.
 Hi again!
Well someone on this list asked had I tested my Imic with JFW to
see how sluggish it was. well I had JFW running on one of my
machines here so thought I'd give the Imic a go, here are the
 results.

Its no issue whatsoever with the Imic, it just doesn't happen and
blows all the internal sound cards away in this issue and others, I
had this problem particularly with the Sound Blaster line of cards

sound device, great for those laptop systems that don't have a full
 sound device built-in.
A CD ROM comes with the Imic but as yet I haven't examined its
contents, I've had no need to.

Brent! The people at Imic tell me that it does record in stereo and
even has some minimal pre-amps but they also told me that it isn't designed
for professional recording. I'd like to hear from someone whose recorded in
stereo with it. I might have to get one for myself for Christmas.

I've certainly recorded in stereo with it, from day one when it first
came into my possession.
No, the Imic isn't billed as a professional device and nor would you
expect it to be for $50.00 but by God, it certainly gives many higher
priced audio devices a good run for their money.

My missgivings
increased upon the opening of the box to discover that the Imic is
about 1 and a half inches round, it looks almost comical, like one of
those toys we used to play with as kids, like an oversized watch or a
standard sized lollypop but the outside looks I can assure you having
tested this little beauty are truly deceptive.
The Imic plugs into a USB 2.0 port of your computer and as I've
already stated, whether you're a fan of your Mac or of your PC makes
no difference whatsoever, just plug the Imic in and you have another
sound device, great for those laptop systems that don't have a full

I wondered that myself actually, I don't know. Grifin Technology make
the Imic so check with them I guess.
I also neglected to mention that as this device doesn't require
drivers on a PC or a Mac then its damn useful to use if you're on the
road installing Windows on different computers as Windows just finds
the Imic and uses it so you can get Narrator up and running to
complete the Windows Install if you need to.
