Sorry Peter you are absolutely correct, I meant the opposite of what I
wrote. The nice thing is that the menus don't rap. So if you get to the
beginning or end of a menu, you're not confused by them automatically
starting at the beginning again.

TJ, you wrote:

Yes, it does, but only if you use the standard firmware, with which the
recorder cannot be used as a universal mass storage device. With the
standard firmware, one has to use propriatary software to transfer files
from and to the iRiver. To use it as a USB drive, one has to use an
alternative firmware, also from iRiver. With that, one can only record
up to 96 KBPS.

The most accessible flash recorder is the new Plextalk PTR2. Flash makes
no noise, which is good, because one doesn'T have motor noise on ones
recordings. But it also causes a Problem, because one cannot hear,
whether the recorder does anything or not. Also the menus of these
recorders offer a lot of options, but for blind people, they make such a
device a bit difficult to use. A talking flash recorder like the PTR2
IMHO is a great solution.

Hi Dean
The internal mic on the 899 is pretty sensitive. Especially if you're
using the iriver with the automatic gain control turned on. If you're at
the very very back of the class then you might have a problem, but
otherwise, it's pretty good.

Dean, I was able to use it without difficulty using Window Eyes 5.5
beta 2. However, it did require using the mouse keys in order to use
most any function.

I installed the UMS firmware in order to be able to quickly and easily
transfer files and folders both to and from the Iriver.

Be advised that the UMS firmware upgrade file for the 799 is not the
same as the file for the 899.

One other consideration. If you opt to use the UMS firmware, you
cannot play Ogg/vorbis files if I understood the cautionary message on
the Iriver site correctly.

Yes, Jonathan, I've been following your r-1 explorations. The battery life
is a limitation, and so is the price. For what I'll do, I suspect the

the computer, not do a lot of transfers, and not use it as a mass storage
or listening device. If using the proprietary software means I can choose
to make higher-quality recordings, I might want to do so. I assume this
quality improvement also applies to the 799 or 899 though I haven't
researched the matter fully yet.

RE: ifp 999

2005-10-31 Thread Jim Ruby
The 999 does not look any different from what I could tell from the 799 or
899, but it has a color screen. At least that is the only difference I
could tell, oh and the price was $300

I was tempted to try it, but found a 799 for under $140 so went that rout
for now.

Oy TJ! Surprised to see you here. Listen man, IFP-series, not worth your
time. Podcasters on the Blindcasting list disagree with me, but the fact
that it can only record in 96 K MP3 is the lose. Sorry, bad.

RE: ifp 999

2005-10-31 Thread André van Deventer
Hi

I bought the Iriver h320 a month or so ago for exactly the purpose of
getting good recordings and have never looked back. It's a bit pricy though
as it has a 20 gb hard disk. But it is quite accessible and easy to work
with.

I recorded a big part of an international congress on mental health and
deafness last week with the built-in mic at 64 kbps mono and was quite
surprised at the sound quality.

Regards

Andre
