The Zoom H1 Audio Recorder Accessaries Kit

2011-01-29 Thread Dane Trethowan
Hi!

Just updated my blog with a piece describing the accessaries you get in the kit
which I believe is well worth the extra money to pay if you have a Zoom H1.

I might add to be careful when using the tripod since you could knock it
over if not careful.

Yes I noted that, also be sure that the legs of the tripod are fully extended.

wow, this price sounds great, even with a conversion rate. This
recorder still has a high noise floor compared to minidisc recorders.
I ended up deciding to pay more for a sony PCM D50 for the lower noise
floor for broadcast quality recordings on the cheap.

For those in Australia who are thinking about purchasing one of these superb
recorders you may wish to hang fire for a week or two. Dynamic Music - the
Australian distributors - are undergoing a major price restructure for all
the products they sell right now and are expected to announce new attractive
pricing for the H1, it should be available for $120.00 Australian which
includes warrantees and so on, I'd rather that than say purchasing
 internationally or through Ebay smile.

For full details consult yesterdays Age Newspaper, the Green Guide Section
 and the Bleeding Edge column.

Yeah but correct me please about a few issues that the Sony machine has, for
example can it only use memory stick? If so then I'm not particularly
interested in that.

As the review states on the H1, the noise factor of the Zoom H1 is only
noticable in very quiet environments and you can hear this in the review itself
so given all that? Well I reckon $99.0 U.S. is an absolute bargain. Admitedly
you'll need a reasonable memory to remember what the format and sampling rate
is set to but most people I know have good memories smile.

Re: The Zoom H1 audio recorder

2010-09-19 Thread James Scholes
The PCM-D50 is fitted with 4 GB of internal flash memory and a Memory
Stick Pro-HG Duo^(TM) slot.

To be fair, if you thought the noise floor was too high on the H1, then
either you have a very special purpose for it, like recording speech in
super quiet environments, or you've wasted your money because you don't
understand that 99% of sounds you capture are loud enough to mask the
sound. And if they're not, use an expander/gate on your recording
afterwards. The H1 is not designed for the same applications that the
PCMD50 is, but that's not to say it can't do a damn good job. And as
you said, for $99, not only can you honestly not get anything better,
but you'd be a fool to suggest that a $99 piece of kit with no menus is
up to the same standards of a menu-driven, $600 recorder like the PCMD50.

With the Sony recorder, or any other recorder with menus but no speech,
you have a hell of a lot more to remember than sample and bit rate. For
a start, you need to remember where those settings are in the menu
system, never mind how to set them once you get there. So I don't see
it as a floor of the recorder, as only the DM4, DM520 etc from Olympus
overcome memory problems by providing speech feedback.

Yep, makes a huge amount of sense to me and thanks for clarifying the memory
capabilities of the Sony PC-MD50.

Unfortunately we cannot get that machine in Australia otherwise I'd consider it
but for $99.00 U.S.? Well the Zoom H1 is one of those devices not to be passed
up.

Re: The Zoom H1 audio recorder

2010-09-19 Thread Matthew Bullis
I wrote to Neal after his review debuted, but didn't get a response. I
wonder if when you turn off the recorder, if the sampling rate always
defaults to 44/16? If you're in the record standby mode, which you are when
you press record once, then you use the arrows to increase or decrease the
sampling rate. If you choose something else, by design or mistake, then I'd
like to know if it stays there even after you switch it off? If it doesn't,
then even better, since I'd want to know where I was in the selection. Also,
is the autogain setting a switch on the machine? Does the volume and
recording level always default to fifty when you turn the machine on? The
threads for the tripod are contained on the machine. Can you get an adaptor
to fit this onto a microphone stand, and if so, is it included inside the
accessories pack which Zoom also sells?

Thanks a lot.

Listen to the review at http://www.blindcooltech.com and I'm sure you'll find
that Neil mentions that once the sampling rate etc is set then it stays put
until you change it.
