USB Sound Card Recommendation

2007-01-11 Thread Andy Logue
Hi all.

I'm looking for a recommendation of an external sound card.

I'm looking for an external sound card that can connect to my AV unit and
record from it using an Optical in socket. I'm also needing an Optical out
socket, so as to play files from my computer to my hi-fi. So it's important
that it has both Optical in and Optical out facilities. In addition, and
probably the most important, it should be accessible by screen readers, such
as JAWS.

At present, I have a Creative SoundBlaster, Live, 24 bit external sound
card. Unfortunately, although this does have an Optical out, it only has a
line in facility.

Any advise very welcomed.

Best wishes.

External USB Sound Card Recommendation

2013-10-26 Thread Sharonda Greenlaw
Hello list,
My name is Sharonda. though I've been on this list a while, I have
only been lurking. I am now ready to do some hobby recording and need
lots of help.

I have a Windows 7 computer with JAWS 14. I have a Yamaha MM6 keyboard
and want to record some songs that I have written. I want to get a
fairly inexpensive USB sound card. What is the list's recommendation
for this?

I'm sure I will need a sound editor as well. Should I use Sound Forge
or Goldwave? Are there any tutorials for either product?
Thanks in advance for your assistance. This is truly a new area for
me, so I'm sure I'll have more questions as I go.

Re: USB Sound Card Recommendation

2007-01-11 Thread Brent Harding
My turtle beach internal is supposed to have optical in and out. I'm not
sure what those connectors are like. I find 2 square things that stick out a
ways that feel like they have a tiny holl in the middle where a pin on a
cable might fit in. I wanted to use mine with my Iriver H120 mp3
player/recorder because my stereo mix is of real low quality for some reason
as compared to the speakers. I'd rather not have to deal with splitting the
speaker connection if I don't have to, but not sure what sort of cable to
get because the Iriver has a normal mini plug that supposedly can be
switched into optical mode.

Re: USB Sound Card Recommendation

2007-01-12 Thread Andy Logue
Hi Stephen.

I've got an AV unit in the room next door which has satellite television on
it. The Engineer has plugged in 2 Optical cables for me. One for audio out
and one for audio in. I was hoping to play music and audio described movies
from my computer through the wall to the av unit. I was also wanting to
record on my computer, using GoldWave, AD movies that may be showing on the
TV. Unfortunately, the sound card I purchased only has an optic out and a
line in. Although I could still do what I wanted, I thought that the optic
connection would give me better quality sound reproduction.

Best wishes.

Hi again Stephen.

I have the Creative SoundBlaster Live, 24 bit external card.

This card has two optical out's and a line in, but no optical line in.

It's quite a nice device and I have Creative 5.1 speakers to go with it. I
think it cost about £80.00

Best wishes.

Re: USB Sound Card Recommendation

2007-01-12 Thread Brent Harding
I use JFW 6.2. Of course most of the sliders in their software are custom so
they don't speak, but some of the settings do. For some reason, I had to
hide a different driver in windows upgrade for a CMedia PCI card I don't
have.

Re: USB Sound Card Recommendation

2007-01-12 Thread Brent Harding
That seems odd to have 2 optical outs. I thought 5.1 is normally all in one
of those. I guess they give you another one to record from or something.

Hi again Stephen.

I have the Creative SoundBlaster Live, 24 bit external card.

This card has two optical out's and a line in, but no optical line in.

It's quite a nice device and I have Creative 5.1 speakers to go with it. I
think it cost about £80.00

Best wishes.

Re: USB Sound Card Recommendation

2007-01-12 Thread Andy Logue
Hi Stephen.

No, I'm playing JAWS through my original computer sound card and speakers,
and all my audio media comes through the new external sound card. This is
quite handy as I can listen to music whilst doing something else on the
computer.

That seems odd to have 2 optical outs. I thought 5.1 is normally all in one
of those. I guess they give you another one to record from or something.

Re: USB Sound Card Recommendation

2007-01-12 Thread goshawk
the audigy2nx also from creative does have both optical in and out, as well
as the SPdif out, line-in and mic in, it also has outputs for standard and
5.1 speaker systems.
personally, I prefer the alisis IO2 usb soundcard, as whilst it doesn't have
the analogue 5.1 output of the audigy, and has spdif in and out, rather than
the optical ones, it does have actual level controls for left and right
input channels, main output, headphone output, and monitor mix, it also has

That seems odd to have 2 optical outs. I thought 5.1 is normally all in one
of those. I guess they give you another one to record from or something.

Hi again Stephen.

I have the Creative SoundBlaster Live, 24 bit external card.

This card has two optical out's and a line in, but no optical line in.

It's quite a nice device and I have Creative 5.1 speakers to go with it. I
think it cost about £80.00

Best wishes.

Hi Andy

before I settled on my soundblaster live 24 bit external souncard, I bought
one of those audigy nx usb devices, but found that it sounded awful wwith
jaws, so beware.

However if you're listening to jaws via another soundcard, it might well do
the job for you. Sorry I can't confirm that it does have optical in and out
as I didn't get around to using them.

Re: USB Sound Card Recommendation

2007-01-12 Thread Stephen Green
nevertheless, several users have reported the same sound problem on the jaws
list. The sound reverberates at the end of sentances which is very annoying.
The problem cannot be rectified by updating the motherboard or sound card
drivers, which means that one is left with an unusable system.

This problem only affects jaws and not other audio sources like winamp or
media player.

2007-01-13 Thread Andy Logue
Hi Simon.

I had a look for the Audegy 2 via google and got some specifications on the
device. I don't think it has Optical connections at all Simon, not unless
the SPDIF's are optical? The info is as follows:

1 x Hi-Speed USB - 4 PIN USB Type B ¦ 1 x audio - line-In - mini-phone
stereo 3.5 mm ¦

1 x microphone - input - mini-phone 3.5mm ¦

1 x audio - SPDIF input ¦

1 x audio - line-out/headphones - mini-phone stereo 3.5 mm ¦

1 x audio - SPDIF output ¦

1 x audio - line-out - mini-phone stereo 3.5 mm

1 x audio - line-out (rear) - mini-phone stereo 3.5 mm ¦

1 x audio - line-out (centre/subwoofer) - mini-phone stereo 3.5 mm ¦

1 x audio - SPDIF output - RCA

What do you think?

Best wishes.

of those. I guess they give you another one to record from or something.

Best wishes.

the audigy2nx also from creative does have both optical in and out, as well
as the SPdif out, line-in and mic in, it also has outputs for standard and
5.1 speaker systems.
personally, I prefer the alisis IO2 usb soundcard, as whilst it doesn't have
the analogue 5.1 output of the audigy, and has spdif in and out, rather than
the optical ones, it does have actual level controls for left and right
input channels, main output, headphone output, and monitor mix, it also has
actual switches for selecting your recording source, such as spdif, mic or
line, so there is no need to have to mess around selecting which ever one in
the windows volume control, muting and unmuting things to see if signals are
at the right levels, or keep plugging in and unplugging things. its mic
sockets are on XLR's with phantom power if needed, its line-in and
line-out's are on left and right quarter inch jack sockets for better
quality, and it also has insert sockets for super easy adding of hardware
such as eq's, compressor/limiters, or other effects.

Re: External USB Sound Card Recommendation

2013-10-26 Thread Petro T. Giannakopoulos
Hi
I asked the same question about two weeks ago. I am pasting again for those who
missed it. Hope this helps. All the credit goes to the author from Australia.

Named Robert Nelson

You can use an external usb sound card with your laptop. Indeed, if you are
using Jaws as your screen reader, it allows you to set up an ideal situation
where Jaws, through its internal settings, can be made to use the laptop's
internal sound card whilst the external sound card is set up as the default
sound device to play your music, videos and the like. You would do it this way
because the external sound device will have better sound quality than the
internal sound device.

As I have indicated, if you are using Windows, you will have to go into the
Windows control panel and set the external sound device as the default sound
device.

When you plug the usb device in, depending on which one you buy, the driver
will be downloaded from the internet or you will be prompted to insert the
supplied CD. In most cases, unless you are determined to do something really
tricky, you should be able to make any adjustments to the sound through the
control panel.

I am not sure how you would send the screen reader to one device and your music
etc to the external sound device if you are using Window-eyes, System Access or
NVDA but I do not doubt that it is possible to do it with those programs.

The following is a list of some external usb sound cards. Of these, the Asus
XONAR U7 and the Creative OMNI are probably the best. There are better units
but they are also far more expensive.

ASUS Xonar U7 Compact 7.1 Channel USB Soundcard - Headphone Amplifier With
192kHz/24-bit HD Sound, Dolby Technologies, Dolby Home Theater V4 - USB approx
$100

Creative Sound Blaster Play! - USB Sound Card approx $30 (if you can find one,
probably available on E-bay these days)

Creative X-Fi Go Pro USB Sound Card - Black approx $70 (may be less on E-bay)

Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Surround 5.1 Pro - THX TruStudio Pro, Dolby Digital
Live - USB2.0 approx $80 (or less on E-bay)

Creative Sound Blaster Omni External Sound Card - 5.1 Channel, Built-In Dual
Microphones With CrystalVoice Technology, Dolby Digital Live, Scout Mode -
USB2.0 approx $90

Creative Sound Blaster Digital Music Premium HD - Black approx $130

  Hello list,
My name is Sharonda. though I've been on this list a while, I have
only been lurking. I am now ready to do some hobby recording and need
  lots of help.

  I have a Windows 7 computer with JAWS 14. I have a Yamaha MM6 keyboard
and want to record some songs that I have written. I want to get a
fairly inexpensive USB sound card. What is the list's recommendation
  for this?

I'm sure I will need a sound editor as well. Should I use Sound Forge
or Goldwave? Are there any tutorials for either product?
Thanks in advance for your assistance. This is truly a new area for
me, so I'm sure I'll have more questions as I go.

External USB Sound Card from A T Guys link is below. Read the getting started
link when you are there. They describe the layout of the USB sound card too.
You also get free a USB extension cable.

I also found the Creative X-Fi Pro on Ebay for $17.95 with free shipping on
Ebay.

Subject: External USB Sound Card Recommendation

  Hello list,
My name is Sharonda. though I've been on this list a while, I have
only been lurking. I am now ready to do some hobby recording and need
  lots of help.

  I have a Windows 7 computer with JAWS 14. I have a Yamaha MM6 keyboard
and want to record some songs that I have written. I want to get a
fairly inexpensive USB sound card. What is the list's recommendation
  for this?

I'm sure I will need a sound editor as well. Should I use Sound Forge
or Goldwave? Are there any tutorials for either product?
Thanks in advance for your assistance. This is truly a new area for
me, so I'm sure I'll have more questions as I go.
