RE: XP Media Center Question.

2007-03-19 Thread Rick Alfaro
Jim,

Although I mainly use Window Eyes, it will basically be the same with Jaws.
I will include a list of hotkeys below. Watching and recording is easy and
works well once you get the hang of it. There is lots of stuff that doesn't
speak like most dialogs and unfortunately, most program info displays, but
navigating through the program guide, recording, playing back recordings and
all of that stuff thankfully works quite well. Just check out these hotkeys
then get in there and poke around a while and you will see what I mean. In
addition, if you have a full fledged media center pc, with built-in tuner
and remote, the remote works very well and many times easier than using the
keyboard. Note that these keyboard shortcuts along with shortcuts for all
MS products can be found here.

Jim,

As I recall, when you schedule a recording for the current day, the date is
not shown in the list of scheduled programs, but if the recording is
scheduled for another day in the future, the date is shown in the list.
Unfortunately, I haven't been able to figure out a way to go to a specific
date within the guide though. If anyone knows the answer to this, please
post it as I would love to figure that out.

Hi Rick, do you know if Media Center has a one-touch recording
feature? I didn't see it in the shortcuts list, but I can't believe
MC doesn't have this capability. Thanks for any insight, Norma

Norma,

Not sure what you mean by one touch, but if you are watching something and
just want to start recording on the fly, most definitely. You can just hit
control r or hit the record button on the remote.

RE: XP Media Center Question.

2007-03-24 Thread Rick Alfaro
Hi, sorry, no I do not have a real description. I only know the buttons I
use and those I found by trial and error. I typically use the row of 4
buttons above the number pad. The first one takes you directly to your
scheduled or list of recorded programs, the second one takes you directly to
the Guide, and the third on takes you directly to live tv. I do not know
what the fourth one does.

I also use the circle found in the middle of the remote. This pretty much
acts as you would expect, like arrow keys with the center being like the
enter key.

I also use the large round button that is found directly above the circle.
This is the play button. There are 2 small thin horizontal buttons
directly to the left and right of the play button. These are rewind and
fast forward. Above the play button there are 3 small round buttons at
positions 10:00, 12:00, and 2:00. The right most of the 3 buttons is pause,
the middle on is stop, and the left most one is record for on the fly
recording. If you record something with this button, just press stop to
stop it and you will get a dialog that doesn't really speak except for the
yes and no buttons. It is asking you if you really want to stop the
recording I think. Use your left and right arrow keys in the circle to
choose.

Of Cures, you can also use any of the keyboard shortcuts I already posted to
do any of this.

Sorry I don't know every button, but maybe this will get you started.

wonderful. already a pretty good begining.

I will experiment these buttons and if someone know other functions of
the remote, let us know.

Re: Another XP Media Center Question.

2007-03-25 Thread pete gurney
hello jim,

yes there are many different versions available.
there are internal pci models plus USB models that are available like a
memory stick or as a box with a USB lead coming off of it.
but probably the best ones on the market are the nebula models.
they all support audio description transmissions for both listening to live
and for recording.
this obviously depends on where you are in the world, but they do work in
several countries and they are listed on their website:
www.nebula-electronics.co.uk
they also are aware of the needs of visually impaired people and make their
software as accessible as possible.
they are also about to launch a new home media centre that has 3 digital
tuners plus a 500 gb hard drive within it that will work by connecting
direct to a tv, via a wired network, or by wi-fi to your pc's or to tv's
around the home if you connect one of their thin client receivers to the
tv.
i also believe that their adapters are the only ones on the market that are
able to receive high definition signals.

the other major manufacturer of digital pc adapters is hauppauge and their
international site is:
www.hauppauge.com
but their models don't support audio description.

Hi! I just went to the web site for nebula electronics, and liked what I
was able to read there, but before I even think about buying anything, I
have some questions. Would the pci card version of their tv tuner work in
the stats, and if so, does it work well with Windows Media center? I'm very
interested in getting it for my new computer if it supports audio
description features.

I'm not so sure because basically, Microsoft instruct pc manifacturers
to only support a small number of chips
because they must be validated by MS

What you really need to ask is whether your television service
provider can send the proper codes to the card to authorize it for use
on their network. You may also discover, much to your annoyance, that
the channel mapping differs between what a set-top box would know and
what your TV tuner card would know. Case in point: Here in
Manhattan, a friend connected his Media Center PC directly to his
cable. QVC, which was channel 55 on his box, was accessed at channel
200-something through Media Center controlling the tuner card. He's
not paying for any premium services so there's no issue of tuner-card
authorization, it apparently just works like it should on regular
"basic" channels. Be careful, this could happen to you with the cards
mentioned.

2007-03-30 Thread pete gurney
hello missy,

sorry i'm so late in replying to your message but i haven't been around
much this week.
unfortunately i gave nebula a call today and they told me that although
their audio description works in several countries around the world it
doesn't work with the broadcasts in the United States .
this is because the USA has decided to use a different system for their
audio description rather than the one the other countries are using.
