What should the sectors be set for starting and ending time and what should the spinup
speed be?

CDEX has options for extraction that should take care of clicks at the
beginning and end of tracks. They are: Start and end offset (sectors).
Look under the CD drive tab of Cdex configuration. You might also want to
change the spinup speed.

I have no idea what values you would need sharon. I think it is a matter of
reading the manual and help files and experimenting with your particular
drive.

Re: cdex and scratches

2004-08-08 Thread Kevin Lloyd
Just to add to this thread. Looking over the CDEX manual, it appears the
track offset parameter that is the first edit box in the CDEX window should
be used for fine tuning track start. It is defaulted at zero but can be
incremented with each increment equating to a 75th of a second.

Although this could be used to fine tune where CDEX determines the start of
the track,
I think it would be quicker to rip and edit later for the number of times
you need to do this.

It would be interesting to see if any of the paid for rippers can do a
better job but I'd assume that this issue is with individual CD's and
suspect that even the paid for rippers would need some manual fine tune for
the odd track here and there? Many of the cases where there's a click or
scratch are where tracks actually merge into each other on the source CD.

I don't believe that ripping a track at a time would resolve this minor
irritation with CDEX and it would be more trouble than it's worth. To put
things into perspective, I get about one example of a click or scratch at
the beginning or end of a track for every 3 or 4 CD's ripped so it's not
really a big deal to trim it off. I normally review the ripped tracks
with
Winamp by starting the music in that folder and then using alt + R to move
me to within 5 seconds of each track's end thus allowing me to review the
end and start of each track and only trim those that have a click or
 scratch.

Would saving the tracks as WAV's to the hard drive first fix the
problem?
Perhaps you could convert one track at time from WAV to MP3?

When I was using CDEX, I never experienced this problem, I've seen it but
not for ages and only one ripper I ever owned gave me the problem.

I'm sure that paid rippers will display this problem too! if the drive
paramaters are not set correctly or are incompatible in some way.

Unless I'm very wrong, each CD-ROM/CD-RW drive has its own offset values so
you'd have to find out what they are and I'm glad that CD ripping software
is allowing the entry of these valuses as it makes for accurate ripping.

In the case of EAC (Exact Audio Copy) you can make a test CD to dertermine
these values or use a CD marked in the EAC CD database, many pre-recorded
CD'S are lsited.

Re: cdex and scratches

2004-08-07 Thread Kevin Lloyd
Hi Sharon.

This is fairly common and that scratch sound can appear at the start of a
track or at the end. I think it's caused by the encoder not being able to
make a completely clean cut between the track beginning or track end.

I use a program called MP3TRIM to clean up my ripped tracks. It's shareware
and comes in a few flavours. The freeware version is fully functional but
will only let you clean up tracks less than 5MB in size, the personal
version can be purchased for about $20 and will let you clean up tracks up
to 25MB and the Pro version will allow you to use certain batch functions as
well as having no size limits on files that can be processed.

The program is fairly accessible but does need some JAWS cursor work.
Basically, you sample the beginning and end of each file where you have this
problem and trim away the number of frames that will remove the sound. You
can also fade in and fade out to clean up those tracks ripped from live
concert recordings.

hi,
What are you playing these mp3's with? With winamp, I notice a click at
