looking for the right laptop for my dj business

2011-08-30 Thread Troy Sullivan
Hi all,
I'm starting my own dj business and was wanting to use a laptop for my music
instead of a turntable. What kind of laptop would be suitable for this kind of
work? I know I will need lots of gb space for my music, also what price range
would I be looking at?
Thanks.

Re: looking for the right laptop for my dj business

2011-08-30 Thread Christopher Chaltain
Well, I'm no DJ, but I recently bought a few laptops for myself and my
sons, and I did notice that the high end laptops are pretty tricked out
with some nice audio enhancements. There's the HP Envy Beets Edition for
example. There are tons of reviews you can get to with Google. The Asus
N55 and Dell XPS 15 both really tout their JVL sound system, so I'm
assuming they must be pretty good. I'm also guessing that Sony has a
pretty good Vio laptop in this space as well. Of course, I'm sure
MacBooks are also to die for!

I myself went with the Asus over the HP. A MacBook was a dark horse, but
I just didn't want to have to learn a new OS. I didn't really consider
Dell or Sony or any other brands because they didn't show up near the
top of the reviews I was looking at. I guess I would have considered a
Lenovo, but I just didn't see them offering what I was looking for.
Again, note I wasn't specifically looking for audio, and I'm no DJ.

500G and 640G hard drives are pretty standard in this space. I'm
guessing you want at least 4G of memory and probably would get a lot of
benefit from 8G. I'd also think an I5 processor would be the way to go,
but if you want even more horse power and performance then you could
also go with an I7, although this may cut into your battery life a bit.

You'll probably spend between $1000 and $1500 on such a laptop. The Asus
would be at the lower end and the HP at the higher end. Of course, a
MacBook would go way beyond that, but then you'd have a MacBook!

I'd recommend checking out different reviews. I usually stop at
consumersearch.com (although their site is a bit harder to navigate than
it used to be) and CNet.com. After checking out those sites, I start
googling to look for more reviews.
