[Pcusers] Help with Win XP needed please

2017-04-01 Thread John Morrison
Hi all, I'm trying to get an old laptop set up with for a friends daughter
who has some old Win XP programs for kids. To be brief so as to not bore
everyone...

It was running fine but to be careful I wiped the hard drive and
reinstalled XP. I hate to say it but I installed sp1 but now I can't find
the disk and sp2 wants the license info so no luck going any further with
that.

I can't get online on helpful websites with IE 6. I did download IE 8
which is supposed to be the last good version for XP on my desktop but it
won't run on this laptop. Same with Slim Utilities.

I do have wired networking working on it.

That's about where I am, I'm hoping some of you might have some thoughts,
helpful utilities or maybe even a full set of Win XP disks that you'd be
willing to bring to Mondays workshop.

Also, if you have any suggestions for me please email me back off the list.

Thanks,

John

[Pcusers] Help please!!

2017-01-04 Thread John Morrison
Can someone remind me of the computer shop's name that was in the Big Y
Shopping Center. It's the one that moved from W 11th. They have
apparently moved again.

A FB friend is asking about buying a Dell or an HP and I wanted to
recommend a custom build. In lieu of the above, what other shops might you
recommend?

Thanks,

John

Hey Larry, I'm hoping to reserve some time with you early at Monday's
workshop. I'll only have a half an hour or so and I'm having trouble
posting a video on another group's Website. Just an FYI, no worries if
your otherwise committed. Thanks, John

work on laptop drives too when I get to those. :-)

*Note: * Thanks to all who helped with this project last week and it was
really nice to see some old faces. It was almost like the meetings at
Harris Hall again. We weren't able to get the job done, lots of problems
with my old laptop but mostly I guess you need a partitioned hard drive to
install the dual boot. Since, I have upgraded my 256 RAM to 1 Gig and I've
installed an updated BIOS. About partitioning the hard drive, it will take
me forever to do XP reinstall and partition the hard drive but I've figured
out a work around. I do have a (still in it's package) hard drive and I'm
hopping that we can just set up the dual boot and install Ubuntu at an
upcoming meeting. Then I will have plenty of time to reinstall XP. I
won't be able to do it at tomorrow's meeting though.

*** With any luck Larry will be installing Ubuntu (the most downloaded
Linux OS for desktops) on my old Windows laptop. Come and see if he can
make it live again. He says it will dual boot and the old Windows files
will be available in both OS's.

Re: [Pcusers] Solved: Internet Explorer crashes or hangs on startup

2014-03-04 Thread John Morrison
Zener, would you mind if I share this on my FB page?

On Sat, Mar 1, 2014 at 2:34 AM, Zener Stanfill zen...@yahoo.com wrote:

I don't know how many of you this may affect, but I thought it useful
 information to share.

 Case:
Windows 7 (any version could be affected) (Clean install or not)
 Internet Explorer 9 and up

When I ran Internet Explorer, the start up page would load, but instead of
seeing a webpage, all I saw was white. My cpu usage was pegged. I would get
an error message and click the close browser button. The browser just kept
throwing out the same error message over and over again.

When I disabled the Display Adapter (video card) in Device Manager, IE
 worked just fine.

I discovered a setting that can be used in Internet Options that fixes
this problem. IE by default, uses GPU (Graphics Processing Unit aka Video
Card) rendering for its webpages. If you have a wimpy (cheap) Graphics
Adapter like the one in the machine I'm working on, it won't be able to
give IE what it wants/needs. So instead, IE needs to use Software rendering.

In an ideal world, (hint, hint microsoft...), IE would detect this
conflict and automatically fix this issue with no user intervention. Until
then, some of us need to do things the manual way.

 Here's the trick:
Open the Internet Options (do this in the Control PanelNetwork and
 InternetInternet Options).
 Click Advanced tab.
In the Settings section, find Accelerated graphics (for me it was at the
 top of the list.)
Put a check mark next to: Use software rendering instead of GPU rendering.
 Click OK.
 Run IE. All is fine...

The information about this conflict and resolution can be found at:
 http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn338138.aspx
 in the section titled:
Internet Explorer is crashing or seems slow.
Note: The microsoft page references IE 11. As I stated earlier, this
 affects IE 9 and up.

[Pcusers] Free Anti-Virus Programs

2010-11-09 Thread John Morrison
Re: a question from last night's meeting, this is an excerpt from
http://askbobrankin.com/free_antivirus_programs.html?awt_l=CT97hawt_m=1ksmFds7veP6SL
and should help. Follow the link for more on this.

Free Anti-Virus Programs
a.. AVG - is one of the most often recommend freeware anti-virus packages.
While Grisoft offers a paid version, there is a freeware version of the
virus protection on the website. It only offers anti-virus and anti-spyware
protection (no anti-spam, anti-rootkit or firewall) but provides very
effective protection from the most common threats. The Pro version has Web
Shield to screen your downloads, rootkit protection, and free support.

b.. Avast! - another freebie anti-virus program with basic features, and
ease of use. It is updated regularly, also highly recommended.

The Free Home Edition includes anti-spyware and anti-rootkit detection.

c.. BitDefender - is another highly rated freeware anti-virus tool. Like
the others, it offers just basic anti-virus protection, and I recommended
that you add anti-spyware protection as well.

d.. Avira Anti-Vir - claims over 30 million users worldwide, and the free
Personal Edition gets good reviews. There is a paid version with
anti-spyware and firewall protection as well.

e.. ClamWin AntiVirus - is a free open source antivirus program, which
means it comes with the programming source code. ClamWin has a high
detection rate for viruses and spyware, but does not include a real-time
scanner. This means you have to rely on scheduled or manual scans to detect
viruses. Normally I view open source software as a Good Thing, but in the
case of security software, I wonder if it might help the Bad Guys exploit
the defenses. Using it in conjunction with another anti-virus program might
be a good strategy.

f.. AOL Internet Security - gives you a comprehensive and free set of
Internet safety tools, including anti-virus, anti-spyware and firewall to
help keep hackers out. Under the covers, this package is McAfee's VirusScan
Plus, which is rated high technically, but gets so-so reviews because it
tends to use a lot of system resources.

g.. CA Antivirus from Computer Associates (formerly called EZ Anti-Virus)
is my personal favorite amongst the freebies antivirus tools. RoadRunner
makes this available for free to their customers, but anyone can get a
3-month free trial. I've used this program for several years, and have been
very happy with the protection it provides when scanning both emails and
downloaded files.

h.. Microsoft Security Essentials is a new free security tool from
Microsoft, released in October 2009. It's meant to provide protection not
just from viruses, but also spyware, rootkits, and trojans as well.

[Pcusers] Tonight's meeting

2010-09-20 Thread John Morrison

Thanks again for the help and your participation tonight. Also, for all of
you who were looking over my shoulder when I was trying to set up a tweeter
account, I apparently did have to give them a 2nd e-mail address so as
to get the confirmation e-mail for the new account.

John
