I'd be careful with a fully black background: The IEMGUIs store their
colors in the patch, and most patches use black labels.

[PD] extended sql and py

2008-04-09 Thread Joseph Barrows
hi puredata'ers,
i want to use SQL access, and am confused as to how it get it to work, can
someone explain what i need to do? it doesnt appear to be in the extended
build (just installed auto build for 10 april)
using ubuntu on an intel processor
am happy to download and compile source if needed, i just lose track of
where everything is supposed to go (and need many of the other bits of
extended and dont want to compile everything from source, though i spose i
could, ahh linux!)

also, py is listed in the extended help, but the examples dont work (the py
object is in a dotted line "can not create object" box)

thanks,

[PD] A slightly more substantial question

2008-04-09 Thread Ken Restivo
I'm trying to create a PD application that'll be sync'ed to jack transport as a
sort of master clock.

I found the jack_transport object, loaded it, and it runs. If I bang it
regularly with a metro, I can see the current sample in jack transport. So far
so good.

My question is about what'd be the most efficient/effective way to sync up a
tabplay~ or tabread4~ object to the sample clock in jack transport. So far I've
considered the following approaches:

1) Bang jack_transport with the output of a sig~ or phasor~ object, getting the
clock from jack, and use that to hit tabread4~ (I don't know how I'd do this
with tabplay~ though, and performance is an issue so if tabplay~ is cheaper I
want to use it).

2) Bang jack_transport with the output of a metro every n milliseconds, and
calculate what sample I'm supposed to be at in the tabread4~ or tabplay~
object, and just "re-sync" periodically if they drift. If they aren't ever
going to drift (i.e. if PD's internal sample clock is sync'ed to JACK), then
perhaps this "resyncing" will only happen at the start of playing, or perhaps I
only need to do it then.

3) Or, maybe, let's say if I have a loop, I just need to bang the tabplay~
whenever the sample clock in jack_transport divided the number of samples in
the loop is modulo 0. That'd be simplest and probably cheapest, but I don't
know if the clocks will drift. Will they?

I dunno. I'm asking you guys when probably I should be asking the software
instead, by just trying it out and determining empirically what works. But
before I get too deep into it I'd like to get a second opinion on whether any
of the above approaches will work or if there's some other technique I should
be looking at. For some reason I suspect that this'll go really easily, but I
want to make sure I'm not overlooking anything important.

Thanks.

[PD] arduino for servos, strings and messages of arbitrary length

2008-04-09 Thread Hans-Christoph Steiner

I just finished up the sysex and string support in the Firmata
library and the Pd [arduino] object. I'd be interested in feedback,
since I currently don't have a use for the string stuff.

http://at.or.at/hans/pd/Firmata%20with%20Pd.zip

Just drop the library into arduino-0011/hardware/libraries, and the
example firmwares should show up under Open -> Examples. There are
two firmwares that should control servos when you send the [pwm
( message to the pin (it's rough).

This is an alpha release, so things could be rough. There are some
docs tho:

Re: [PD] Reverse video in the PD editor?

2008-04-09 Thread Martin Peach
The vanilla pd.tk can be edited to set the canvas background colour.
At line 914:
canvas $name.c -width $width -height $height -background white \
change white to something else.
You can also edit proc pdtk_text_new to get coloured text, but lines are
not changeable in vanilla unless you modify the source code in about 5
separate places.

[PD] Reverse video in the PD editor?

2008-04-09 Thread Ken Restivo
I've been starting to use PD for some music production work. It's going very
well so far.

I have a very simple and dumb question:

is there any way to get the PD windows to be in reverse video?

My eyes are killing me. I've got all my other apps set to grey text on a black
background to save my eyesight. It'd be great if there were some hack I could
use to get PD windows to be in reverse video too.

My understanding is that PD uses TK, so there must be some way to do this.
Unfortunately, I don't know TK well enough to know how to do this. Looking in
PD docs I didn't find any mention of reversing the video in PD windows.

Thanks!

Re: [PD] Spanish translation of Pd documentation

2008-04-09 Thread Natanael Olaiz
Thank you and Altern for your replies.

There are some good resources in Spanish on the sites that you sent, but
I didn't found the original documentation in any one... and that is what
I want to translate, because I think is a good reference manual/tutorial
for the new users.
I sent a comment to Oggro's blog asking him about it.

I though to begin the translation on the Musix Linux Audio Distribution
wiki (http://wiki.puredata.info/es/Portada), but maybe is better to do
it in the pdpedia?

Best regards,
Natanael.

Actually, I started pd-extended, everything loaded fine except Gem, saying it
was missing libmpeg.so etc

and there was no way at all to load it until I apt-got the libs.

[PD] problems with pdj

2008-04-09 Thread marius schebella
hi,
I am still a newbie to pdj, so maybe this is a known thing. I have a
code that runs on max, and when I try to load it in pd I get this error:

pdj: java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: wrong number of arguments
pdj:at sun.reflect.NativeConstructorAccessorImpl.newInstance0(Native
Method)
pdj:at
sun.reflect.NativeConstructorAccessorImpl.newInstance(NativeConstructorAccessorImpl.java:39)
pdj:at
sun.reflect.DelegatingConstructorAccessorImpl.newInstance(DelegatingConstructorAccessorImpl.java:27)
pdj:at java.lang.reflect.Constructor.newInstance(Constructor.java:494)
pdj:at com.cycling74.max.MaxObject.registerObject(MaxObject.java:866)
  pdj rmiClient.RmiClient

is this related to a problem in the code? (as I said, the code doesnot
throw an error with max) Or is it a problem of pdj?
the class file is in a folder rmiClient/RmiClient.class. is this what
cuases the problem?
how can I fix it?

Not that i know much about sensors or electronics, but i believe this would
be a bit harder to implement, the modules that come out of home lights
have

a set of resistors and other small bit built into a small circuit.
that is a really good price, however!

Re: [PD] PIR sensors

2008-04-09 Thread Derek Holzer
The home light switches have two parts, usually two separate boards. One
is the sensor, which in my experience even has the inputs and outputs
labeled on the sensor board (or at worse on the relay board), and the
other is a relay to switch the mains voltage to the light on and off.
The sensor board is self sufficient, runs on +5 or +9 volts probably,
while the relay board is designed to have 110/220 VAC running through
it. Easily separated with wire snips. I've never seen anything easier to
hack in my life. Hook it up to power and ground, point it at something
and it gives + volts or ground out the output wire. You could power it
from an Arduino board and run the output back to the input, and from
there do just about anything with it.

best,
d.

Not that i know much about sensors or electronics, but i believe this would
be a bit harder to implement, the modules that come out of home lights have
a set of resistors and other small bit built into a small circuit.
that is a really good price, however!

You can also get the sensor on its own here:

hello there jaime,

I have just recently bought 15 I.R. sensors for an installaition I am
working on.
I found two for around the $5-$6 range

http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.7330

http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.10082

i went with the first link because it is a rabbit, of course.

shouyld get them in a week or two.

i know a bit about hackingt them(not too hard to do it seems)

let me know how this project comes along as we might end up being a valuable
resource to one another.

Great! I had been planning to whip up something like this for a
while, but I'm glad you did it since I probably would have done
something silly like tried to use Pd to process the files.

Thanks

Re: [PD] motion detector (PIR...?)

You could try one of these, it's cheaper and already does what you want:
http://www.hvwtech.com/products_view.asp?ProductID=270
You can also get just the PIR detector (it looks like a transistor with
a window on top) and wire it up with a couple of op-amps to have an
analog sensor.

Btw, Gem crashes as soon as i create a gemhead. glxgears works fine though.

I'll install the newest autobuild and let you know.

[PD] motion detector (PIR...?)

2008-04-09 Thread Jaime Oliver
Hello all,

I was wondering if any of you had any experience hacking motion detectors,
the kind that is used in stores to make a sound when you enter or in lights
that turn on when you pass by... the key of course is that it should have a
digital (on/off spirit).
So far i have understood that they are called 'PIR motion switch'. I am
looking to not do so much work (building and testing a sensor), but to get
one i can hack & hook to a board and get 1's and 0's so any comment is great
and I'll probably need 10-12 so the cheapest the better (they seem to be in
a lot of lights so they should be cheap!!)

I am looking for something similar to this:

http://www.amazon.com/Ziotek-Sensor-Plug/dp/B000BSLTNI/ref=sr_1_19?ie=UTF8&s=hi&qid=1207729271&sr=1-19

i suppose these should work too:

http://cgi.ebay.com/MOTION-DETECTOR-SENSOR-ALARM-CHIME-CUSTOMER-ALERT-NEW_W0QQitemZ300214248030QQcmdZViewItem

http://www.thewholesalediscountstore.com/Shop/Control/Product/fp/SFV/32461/vpid/3965547/vpcsid/0/rid/126381

hope you are all doing well,

best,

Jaime

Hallo!

> tool is dpkg-shlibsdeps, but I am just guessing.

No I changed it already to use dpkg-shlibsdeps (but thanks for the link)
- so I don't really know what the problem is ...

I search for all .pd_linux files and pd itself in the destination dir
(trunk/packages/linux_make/Makefile):

PACKAGE_BINARIES := $(shell find $(DESTDIR) \( -name "*.pd_linux" -o
-name pd \) )

and then calculate the dependencies:

PACKAGE_DEPENDS := $(shell dpkg-shlibdeps -O $(PACKAGE_BINARIES) | cut
-b0-15 --complement )

Do you have any ideas why Gem is not included here ? Is it maybe
installed not in $(DESTDIR) on the autobuild farm ?
