Re: [PD] Puredata on maemo

2010-02-17 Thread Hans-Christoph Steiner

Hey Umberto,

welcome! You can run Pd on Maemo 4.1 so it should work on Maemo 5.
We're working on updating the mobile version of Pd, so perhaps a Maemo
5 build will come out of that. Here's the current release:

have you tried any of these cards in your old system?
Are you already in Lima?

I'm pretty sure I can find you a pci soundcard i know for sure works

[PD] troubles with multichannel output

2010-02-17 Thread palmieri, ricardo
hi people.

im working in an installation using 4 audio+video channels, running in
a quadcore, 2 nvidia9600gt, 4gbram, under ubuntu 9.10 and pd 0.43.

i built this installation last november in argentina. now, we bought a
complete new setup (with some small differences) to replicate the work
in a new museum in lima-peru.

my trouble is: in the last installation, i used a 7.1 onboard
audiocard, with an Intel chipset. using an stupid "alsa force-reload",
i had all the channels opened in PD 0.41 (in ubuntu 9.10) working
great.

now i bought a new motherboard, without a 7.1 channels, and i've tried
to use severals pci audioboard - a 4.1 crystal clear chipset, a 5.1
Via VT1724, and a m-audio 2496 4x4. all of then, in a pci slot.

ok, finally my trouble: i can get all channels working separated in
pd, but, all the time i hear a kind of "metallic" sound instead my
original sound. if i change back to a normal stereo, i can hear the
audio normally.

i made all the test of 5.1, 4.1 and 3.1. i changed to Pd 0.41, 0.42
and 0.43. in all cases, i have the same trouble.
i made some tests also, using vlc and speaker-test, and the
multichannel looks working fine ou of pd.

somebody know how to solve this? i will have my opening in the next 24
feb, and would be amazing to have the 4 audio channels working with my
4 video channels (running in pdp+gem)

thanks a lot

Except that most objects "retain" the last value received from the right
inlets while [line~] and [vline~] "forget" it after receiving a number
in the hot inlet (i.e. they "consume" it).

Pure Data (or Pd) is a free + open source, real-time graphical
programming environment for audio, video, and graphical processing.
Because all of these types of media are handled as data in the
program, many fascinating opportunities for cross-synthesis between
them exist. Pd is commonly used for live music performance,
VeeJaying, sound effects composition, interfacing with sensors,
cameras and robots or even interacting with websites.

A book sprint brings together a group of writers, editors and
artists to produce a published book within several days. This sprint
will combine a workshop within it, where new users will learn to
create basic patches in Pd, documenting them along the way for the
FLOSS Manual. This is an exciting opportunity both to acquire new
skills as well as share them with others in the form of a book!

This sprint is a long-distance collaboration between FLOSS Manuals,
the Berlin Pure Data users group and ITP/Tisch School of the Arts,
New York.

Please bring your own laptop with Pure Data Extended installed. The
workshop is free, with the expectation that participants will
contribute to the FLOSS Manual.

Hey, that's how you learn, and you learn better if you chase parts of PD that
interest you more. The first few parts of the help files talk about data
structures etc... which confuse the hell out of me, don't use 'em, don't plan
to. I'd say if something interests you, go for it, if you don't understand it
take a step back.

Re: [PD] line~ and vline~ right inlets

2010-02-17 Thread Jonathan Wilkes
Hi Matteo,
I think it's just an oversight. The middle inlet of [vline~], for
example, is used in the [sampvoice] abstraction of audio tutorial
D11.sampler.poly.pd so that a quartic envelope may be generated. The extra
inlets are used in many other places as well. I guess the extra inlets
are not necessary-- you could put a [pack] before the object or use
message boxes as in the help patch, but the same could be said about
virtually any object in Pd, and I don't think extra inlets are in danger
of being deprecated.

an .htm is no doubt an .html which is a web page.
downloading works with the svn command:

These commands are meant to build and install the software defined in the
Makefile in that src directory, provided that you have all the source
dependecies installed.
If you are new to Linux, better go with an nightly autobuild if available
for your distribution, or get another precompiled binary from the
puredata.info/downloads page. Pd-extended is not always easy to build as it
is a rather complex system.

[PD] line~ and vline~ right inlets

2010-02-17 Thread Matteo Sisti Sette

Hi,

The behaviour of the second inlet of line~, and of the second and third
inlet of vline~, are not documented in the help patches. Only the "all
parameters in one message to the left inlet" way of working is described
in the help patches.
The behaviour of the other two inlets is not entirely obvious: one can
easily guess that they are used to set the ramp time and (for vline) the
delay; however the fact they "forget" the value after the first message
sent to the hot inlet is in contrast with the behaviour of most built-in
objects and hence is not totally obvious.

I wonder whether they are deliberately left undocumented to "discourage"
their use, with the idea of removing them in the future...?

Re: [PD] respawn PD with gui in Debian

2010-02-17 Thread Bart Koppe

Ok, solved!

In the end I did the following (or one way to build a kiosk pd):

I'm running a fresh install of Debian Lenny, I now disabled gdm.
update-rc.d -f gdm remove

Then I changed (thanks to the debian forums) the
1:2345:respawn:/sbin/getty 38400 tty1
entry in /etc/inittab to:
1:2345:respawn:/sbin/rungetty tty1 --autologin myusername
and installed rungetty.
Then put the following at the top in ~/.bash_profile

if [ -z "$DISPLAY" ] && [ $(tty) == /dev/tty1 ]; then
while [ 1 == 1 ]
do
startx
sleep 10
done
fi

And ran init q, which made me happy.. :)

Then I edited my .xinitrc to:

#!/bin/sh
/home/abortx/./sw-daemon.sh &
sleep 4
/home/abortx/./pd-daemon.sh &
exec gnome-session

and all works. I only have to think about why using the standard gnome
window manager ;)

Actually pd does crash sometimes. I have one script sending live mjpeg
streams to vloopback (dev/video0). pdp_v4l seems to be the only object
that can read virtual loopback devices.. This I send again to GEM. Then
I also change the streams going to /dev/video0, so I don't make live
easy for pd ;)

Thanks all for your help, greatly appreciated!

Also if PD stalls without exiting you can get the gallery staff to
just "control-alt-backspace" to restart the patch without restarting

Re: [PD] Install pd-extended on Ubuntu Jaunty 9.04 i686

2010-02-17 Thread Ben Baker-Smith
Problem solved!

The final trick was to install gcc-snapshot using "sudo apt-get
gcc-snapshot" rather than through getlibs.

Thanks for all your help Andras.

Re: [PD] respawn PD with gui in Debian

2010-02-17 Thread B. Bogart

Hey Bart,

When the script running in xsession exits, it will restart X, so if you
have autologin, and PD crashing does cause an exit, then it will restart
automatically when it crashes. Note I don't find PD doing that on linux
very often...

Also if PD stalls without exiting you can get the gallery staff to just
"control-alt-backspace" to restart the patch without restarting the
computer.

Hmm. My best bet is that the whole (i386) package needs to be installed,
which is called libgomp1. The is an util called apt-file which helps you
find which package contains a specific file - not sure this solves the
problem, though.
Also, getlibs seems to always do the "install? Y/n?" even when it doesn't
install anything at the end.

Pure Data (or Pd) is a free + open source, real-time graphical
programming environment for audio, video, and graphical processing.
Because all of these types of media are handled as data in the program,
many fascinating opportunities for cross-synthesis between them exist.
Pd is commonly used for live music performance, VeeJaying, sound effects
composition, interfacing with sensors, cameras and robots or even
interacting with websites.

A book sprint brings together a group of writers, editors and artists to
produce a published book within several days. This sprint will combine a
workshop within it, where new users will learn to create basic patches
in Pd, documenting them along the way for the FLOSS Manual. This is an
exciting opportunity both to acquire new skills as well as share them
with others in the form of a book!

This sprint is a long-distance collaboration between FLOSS Manuals, the
Berlin Pure Data users group and ITP/Tisch School of the Arts, New York.

Please bring your own laptop with Pure Data Extended installed. The
workshop is free, with the expectation that participants will contribute
to the FLOSS Manual.

Re: [PD] respawn PD with gui in Debian

2010-02-17 Thread Dan Wilcox

On Ubuntu, I call my startup script in ~/.bash_profile and my shutdown/cleanup
script in ~/.bash_logout.

Also, you will need to put ". .bashrc" at the beginning of the .bash_profile so
all the default shell settings will be setup when it is called.

Re: [PD] respawn PD with gui in Debian

2010-02-17 Thread Oli44

helllo,

if your desktop supports the freedesktop spec (LXDE, Gnome...), you
just have to add a *.desktop entry in the ~/.config/autostart folder.

A .desktop looks like this (though you could refine/simplify it):

[Desktop Entry]
Name=mypdlauncher
Exec=/bin/sh /home/pduser/pd-daemon.sh
Terminal=true

I read somewhere, although I've never tested it that you can add a @ in
front of the .desktop entry to have restarted if it crashes.

How can I configure inittab correctly so it runs as user instead of
root, and shows the gui to?

My current inittab entry [to say: I don't know anything about inittab
(blush) ]

TY:23:respawn:/home/abortx/pd-daemon.sh

the script (pd-daemon.sh)
#!/bin/sh
RUNNING=
export DISPLAY=:0.0
pd -open /home/abortx/pd/pdp-gem-bridge-3.pd &
while true; do
RUNNING=`pidof pd`
if [ -z $RUNNING ]; then
pd -open /home/abortx/pd/pdp-gem-bridge-3.pd &
fi
sleep 10
done

Thanks!

Bart

I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly
