i am having a crappy time since 8.10 ubuntu
Nvidia is fucking up the drivers, like i knew they would and making GEM,
pidip, pdp hard to install on new Quadro cards

there is always a trade-off, some things do not work on certain O/s
if playlist worked on WinXp my life would be easier, surely

pd extended on winxp is very good for GEM right now

i have a ppc linux ubuntu working with everything i need but the machine
is slow

it dual boots 7.x ubuntu ppc and os 10.4.9

mac stuff works great except no pdp_freeframe and pdp_frei0r in
extended

interesting on WinXP.

there is fftease for linux:

While the .mov plays on linux in other O/s Quicktime complains of BAD

the workaround is to set pdp_rec~ to use divx

without having a full understanding of the problem, i somehow doubt

putting a warning in the calling application might be even more

filtering for a certain codec can also be confusing, since the

I think it will make Pd much more reliable if we can track down the

these basic scripts ready to go, but they could easily be replaced

I think this could then be expanded into a broader testing framework.

I am working on something at the moment that will be similar to what CMask
does, I am hoping to release it tomorrow, but I suspect that there are still
some parts that need a bit of work. I am trying to make it such that you can
use it in Real Time, with the ability to capture and recall parameter sets.

Basically, I have a Lua object that allows for the use of a Mask (allowing
the control of Mapping [scaling with a power function] an incoming value,
scaling it to an arbitrary range, quantizing it, and then adding an offset
to the signal), along with an input buffer (to provide for using previous
values in the input stream). It is not exactly like CMask, but I believe
that it would be very useful for many applications.

The jist of what I am doing is that you create the mask object, and then
send it a buildgui message to create all the PD gui objects required by
the Mask. This, I hope, would make for a very simple method of creating an
interface to the controlled parameters. I currently have two different
implementations of its use up and working, one for controlling a MIDI
instrument, and another for controlling a sinewave grain generator. I also
believe that creating new implementations (for controlling other types of
things, ie GEM) would be very simple.

If you would like, I could forward a copy to you, if I can't quite get it
ready for release. I would appreciate any feedback you might offer.

When you do address PDP can you include pdp_freeframe and pdp_frei0r into that?
I am not sure if i asked you before but these two would be awesome.
currently on Linux ppc ubuntu i get a greenish color over all of the pixelizi0r

i know this is a specific request but i just wanted to ask :-)

Thanks for the merging howto, looks useful. At this point, only bug
fixes should be added to the release branch. Adding new code could
likely further the delay the release while we wait for the bugs to
settle. Right now PDP is sensitive to changes, so it would be best
to leave it like it is for this release.

The reason for the branch is to make it easier to make a stable
release. It is only used during the final release cycle. Then it is
back to trunk once the release is done.

yes, it's kind of like breakbeat a little hence perhaps BB
sounds kind of glitchy and modern

pretty sure it's open source code, i'll have to check though
there is an opcode and an .sc class,

c'mon guys we NEED a bbcut.pd_linux!!

I'm sorry, what is pdp_rec? It won't create, and I don't find it

I found it as soon as I added the missing tilde at the end: pdp_rec~.

So I now have pdp_rec~. But when I try to play the output file in

happens if I try to import into Final Cut or iMovie.

Google reveals that it's because when QT 7.3 came out, they changed the

found mentioned is reverting to QT 7.2 (someone recommends 7.1.6), which

Put the files on the same machine your keyboard is connected to?

I suggest that you disconnect your keyboard while you make suggestions like
 this one ;)

Just eliminating the obvious, like My computer doesn't work Did you plug
it in? Er, never mind ;)

Seriously, isn't that a problem with the routing on network interface lo? I
had problems like that because a certain version of a DHCP program would
take the default as being DHCP on all connections, but no-one runs a DHCP
server on lo, and everybody has lo, so it would erase the lo settings every
damn time, if you forget to specify a network interface as an argument.

I think pd wouldn't even start up if lo wasn't enabled (because there would
be no route to the gui). Why would the presence of a connection to some
other machine affect anything if no necessary resources are on that machine?

Most likely, you didn't compile the library with -fpic (or -fPIC).
There should not be a R_PPC_REL24 reloc in a shared library compiled

Re: [PD] [OT] Re: about sexism is TERMINATE THREAD PLEASE

2007-10-17 Thread bigswift
most ISMs turn into cottage industries IMHO, feminism is definitely among them
for the record my C++ teacher was a woman, and in Supercollider class we were
pretty much 50/50 men and women, sharing ideas and helping each other with code.
people make mistakes and students can be cruel, but i no longer hop on board
with the men are sex obsessed macho turds, aren't they? stance.
For example: i used to do two benefits a year for the local NOW chapter,
playing music etc.. Until one year their slogan was Don;t be a DICK meaning
do not abuse women etc..
BUt the members of the group felt they needed to inflict this slogan via pins
and buttons and whatnot on the MEN present at the function.

moral: choose your audiences and soapbox carefully

and try not to post the same reply 3 time if possible!

I had decided to ignore it, so I didn't realize the depths it had

I also have a strong distaste for the gang bang talk and macho
programming. It seems that computer music is one of the last bastions
of male dominance, I mean even most Linux events are at least 20%
female, not so in the computer music world. As someone who was
raised by a strong feminist, I have always wondered what I could do
to change that. So far I haven't found an answer, but I am always
 open to suggestions.

It does seem that the macho geek culture is a common complaint. A
friend of mine started college in the Mechanical Engineering
department since she'd always wanted to make things. She was one of
few women in the department, and was constantly challenged and mocked
because she was a woman. Needless to say, she changed departments,
but still wishes she was a mechanical engineer. Sadly, I think that
such things happen with Pd a lot as well.

b1257+12 was a sample mangling patch. I don't recall how many samples it
loaded (2?) but it really did not do that much out of the ordinary. It may
have had some random walk type of parameter changes and in true NN style the
 interface was inscrutable.

Plus you had to deal with them to get the thing in the first place. Not a
stable or rational group to try and do a transaction with. For example, I
am one of two non-c74 employees banned from using Nato for life (the other
is Sean Booth of Autechre). NN was amusing then annoying then pathetic in a
 space of maybe 18 months.

Yeah but why do they still vote for one of the two big parties?

why? I think because USamericans are fearful people. they are fearful,
because they never learned to talk about their problematic history.
genocide and slavery. they just inherit the guilty consciousness
unprocessed from generation to generation. therefor they only feel safe,
when they are protected by a big brother. they live with the idea of the
survival of the fittest (make the rich richer). they never gave black
people compensation for their exploitation (nor any other group). as a
matter of fact this is not only US history, but western history in
general, but european countries experienced worldwar II and I think they
changed their way on communal thinking about racism and so on. there was
some shift in common notion and also the wish to keep this notion alive.
USamericans subconsciously still fear revenge. and even worse, some of
them even think it is a good idea to have a small, rich, educated
leading elite that controls the big majority of people. they propose a
free market, which I see rather as a free slave market, because
preconditions are not fair at all for all people. they try to oppress
every effort of union building and their voting system is a the winner
takes it all. in europe it took green parties more than 20 years to
make it into gouvernments. in the US this is not possible, because with
anything less than 50% you are nothing.
and of course the US has a media that is owned by a handful of people,
and an education system including universities that aligns itself more
to the needs of companies and corporations than to the values of life.
that's why they still vote for one of the two big parties.
with the fall of the dollar, the raise of china, some bank crashs, more
and more unemployed people, no health care, no social security I think
people will start to vote differently within the the next 10-20 years.

lighting control signals would make it a must-have for theaters...
Considering pd's control signals abilities, it shouldn't be too hard
to emulate a lighting board's functions, and also the sound/lighting
interraction could be much deeper. Has anyone thought of this before?
  I know there's usb-dmx boxes out there...
It should be doable with [comport] and an EIA-485 converter on your
serial port, _except_ the snag is the baud rate of 25, which is not
 available on most serial ports.
For usb, this thing looks good, it already has a pd object:

Re: [PD] Linux - which distribution to use?

2007-04-22 Thread bigswift
hello

i found getting pd running on Ubuntu EXTREMELY easy.

user may use synaptic package manager:

1.) search Tk8.4, install Tk8.4 Tk8.4-dev
2.) search tcl8.4, install tcl8.4 tcl8.4-dev
3.) search alsa, install libalsaound-dev [libalsa is already installed]

download and untar pd-0.40-2

./configure --enable-alsa
make, make install

Most of the packages in Ubuntu come directly from Debian. When I was
running Ubuntu on my laptop, I found, that I wasn't using the stuff,

i don't want to be an ass and please don't get me wrong, when i hook

when starting with linux, i had to realize that i hardly know

  (least of
all, that also windows uses a window manager, but the fact that
  windows
tries to hide essential stuff from the user, so that he/she stays
unaware about computers is anothe story) and that i was supposed to
choose and install one, if i want to have a graphical interface.
  quite
many steps were involved, until i had a running pd.
i believe, in ubuntu much lesser steps are needed until pd runs.
  for a
sligthly more advanced user, many steps seem to be obvious and are
  done
fast, but for an innocent, naked, virgin noob (sorry for the strange
wording), like i was two and a half years ago, each step can be a
  real
  pain.
of course, at the end you don't have more or less possibilities in

Re: [PD] call for PDP testing on Mac OS X

2007-04-22 Thread bigswift
i had the best luck following teh directions on Sevy's site, the installers so
far have not worked for me.

instead of pdp_v4l, osx users should use pdp_ieee1394.
we need a usbcam object for OSX , macam seems to get it working for
iShenanigans etc..

finally, i gave up on pdp, pidip for OSX and installed ubuntu-ppc on old
powerbook and everything works

point me at rc and i will give it a shot on a clean mac here.
