Hi Andras,
I agree with you, however it seems we both can't deal now with a global
"pimping" of the portal.
So, I would say, let's start working on the download section; this way we
can get familiar with Plone and a further major enhancement would be easier
in the future.

Unless someone here wants to take over the whole thing.

Besides, shall we move on the PdWeb list as IOhannes suggested?
I just subscribed.

IMHO, the way to do these things is concept/functions/hierarchy -> graphical
design -> implementation (HTML, CSS, CMS hacking). Concept making has
already been started as far as i can see, but it's still kind of long way to
actually changing anything general on the website. When we have new
templates worked out, it won't be so hard to switch them with the current
ones.
Of course, small changes can be done anytime, i just think that a bigger
revamp shall not be started by jumping in the middle of the haystack.
A voluntary leader for the "pimp up" would be nice...

2011-03-09 Thread Hans-Christoph Steiner

It sounds like a number of people are interested in working on the
site. Right now its currently IOhannes and I doing the admin for the
most part. In my opinion, I'd like to see some other people take over
the website stuff, since IOhannes and I already have a lot on our
shoulders. What do you think, IOhannes? There is a certain amount
that only IOhannes can do since only he has root access to the server
itself.

If some of you who spoke up here want to try to get together to make
things happen, I'll do what I can do support that.

Not that i'm not lagging with other tasks (build farm... err) but i want to
offer my HTML/CSS skills to this initiative. I don't know Plone so much but
I've been converting graphical designs to actual pages since 1993 so just

personally, one of the major things in my puredata.info TODO is to
update the plone instance to a newer version of Plone (Plone4 that is).

this should make lots of things easier and nicer, but otoh might break
some of the efforts discussed here.
the major drawback is, that this will not happen within the next weeks.

I think I could help with that. I don't know plone, but I would

If not, what is the best way to do testing?

Also, I think it would make sense to start with the theme that is

Seems like doing a total revamp would take a lot of resources.

It would be nice to pimp up the whole site. I've only been messing
around a little with that, using pre-made themes as templates. Perhaps
that could be doable?

Something clean, simple and practical.
I would like to assist in that, if nothing else.

They've both been there for a long time, I think this is starting to
sound bikeshed-ish. If someone really wants to work on the website, it
should be done as a whole project, not just little changes here and
there.

As for admining the website, IOhannes bears the brunt, I do some, as
much as I can via the website. Others have admin access too. If people
want to learn some plone and help, I think we can give web admin access
to others as well.

I guess the organization of the site is pretty close to what one would
expect it to be, though, some parts do seem a little messy, or outdated
(and I know we could all chip in and help organize a little).

The download section I think is, if not the 1st most important page,
then at least the 2nd.
Clarity is always nice. At least for pd and pd-extended it would be
great if the download section for those was only one click away. And, I
would like it to be even clearer than before, just by glancing at the
page, which is pd (vanilla) and which is pd-extended.

I would like "Downloads" to point to a page where you only see three
options (with clear explanation on what each item is about):

1. puredata
2. pd-extended
3. other (http://puredata.info/community/projects/software)

When clicking 1, or 2, you reach a page where you choose which
package/installer to download to which OS, or a hint that puredata
already exists in this or that repo.

I like the list of software in
http://puredata.info/community/projects/software. It looks like a
beginning of a nice database, which is great, but I don't think puredata
and pd-extended should only be listed there. Right now it's almost hard
to find them.

I'd like that too.

I thought also a generally less clustered site would be also friendly.

Yes, it is.
When someone asked me what version of Pd should

download and from where last

week, I realised how confusing is this and how

unfriendly for a newcomer.

You have to search to even find the main forum of the

program.

Never mind, no objection intended

do object if you need to.
even better would be to provide constructive critic on how
to improve
what is currently there.

For starters:
1. Put the download folder back (attached from archive.org from

Yes, I think that's the issue that started this thread.

2. Don't make the first distribution in the list an alpha release of
library that has no stable release for download. (Better candidate
would be Pd-ext or Vanilla.)

What we need is someone who can do (or learn) the plone templates to
make a better downloads page a reality. Can someone take this on?

What I think we need on the new download page is a fusion of the old
and the 'community/projects' page. So at the top of the new downloads
page would be a simple clear link to downloading Pd-extended, since
its the most newbie friendly distro (that's the aim at least).

[PD] Download Pd?

2011-03-04 Thread Pierre Massat

puredata.info? It's there if you come from google and search for the
download page, but it's not when you're in puredata.info. Or maybe i'm
blind?
