[PD] fast cam

2009-10-21 Thread cyrille henry

hello,

did anyone used a fast camera (100 or 200 fps @ 640x480 or more, with good
video quality) with pd/Gem?

i'd like to have information about the camera and protocol how to do this.

thanks

hello,
thanks for your answer.
but the ps eyes is not what i'm looking for.
i mean : it's a good webcam, specially for it's price.
but at 120fps, the image size is "only" 320x240, and it can be very crappy if
you don't have lot's of light.

I thought you used one for the juggling project a few years ago? It worked
using ethernet and you had to make a movie for Quicktime to load to grab the
stream.

well,
this was on osX, so it was not on my computer.

i'm using only linux...
but, quicktime add few sec of latency, so it was not usable in RT.
we used it only for none realtime stuf + a DV cam for real time.

You might find that to be the case with most high speed cameras. Above a
certain rate they are intended for slow motion playback later and not real
time use. Cameras that record hundreds or even thousands of frames per
second use special RAM on the camera to store a few seconds and then
download the frames using network or USB connections.

If its for tracking applications, any of the video tracking
installations that I have been involved in have used Black&White
security cameras with a visible light filter. Those cameras are
analog and about 150-300€. Then you need to get a analog capture card
though. That could be a Canopus or anything that provides low noise
and high framerate.

Some models go up to 200fps and still fulfill your resolution requirements,
plus i know Sébastien Roy here at UdM uses them under Ubuntu. Haven't played

Re: [PD] fast cam

2009-10-23 Thread Dario Pedrioli
In linux with a ps3 eye camera i've reached (thanks to kaswy - ps3 eye linux
driver )
75 fps @ 640*480
125 fps @ 320*240

You can use more than one camera at a time - only tried with two cameras
succesfully (i've only two of this:-) -> 60 fps @ 1280*480 (used form motion
tracking purpose)
(OT: the only problem I have is: how to compose the two images into one
single image to feed a single pix_blob? If someone can help...)

The video quality is excellent (compared to other webcams) - a little noisy
in low light but very good in normal light.

You can choose Exposure, color balance etc... (auto or manual)

The lenses have 2 zoom factor 56 and 75 degrees.
There is the possibility to hack the hardware and have a M12 lens mount on
it to have a wide range of lenses.

Last, but not least: the price is very very low compared to other solutions
(40 euros each).

ciao!

I used a IEEE 1394 point grey flea2 some month ago, on os X, wondows
and linux, but with linux I had difficulty to make it work and in
particular with pd (I don't remember exactly as I also tried ps3 and
others and several other things including acquisition with openCV true
some externals that I made). On os X it was working natively for sure
(try quicktime I suppose ...), on windows with a special driver. I
must say that as I'm not a pure linux guy, so I maybe missed something.
I used also another one quit similar from another brand, but more
expensive, with additional optic (I still try to remember her name...)

I just see that point grey has new products, maybe you should have a
look.

but yeh, it's optional in svn/PiDiP
if you install libdc1394 and do a ./configure,
it should compile and you can try it

but pd-extended doesn't use autotools,
so you can only try it if you compile pidip yourself ...

have a different pathed driver. that one has been quite stable,
although in my case, anything over 75fps, drops a frame every once in

Hi!

You probably will have to change the "videomode" at module load time or
unload and reload the module with the desired settings, see also here:

http://kaswy.free.fr/?q=node/42

(link is quite old, maybe there where some changes)

cheers
